Turn down the details and you can get whatever frame rate you want. I can get 100+ on 4k with high everything. VR has fewer pixels but far less performance. How is this acceptable?
-
People interested in VR will check this forum first. Like I did. I think the VR cult here is doing more harm than good by praising an implementation that has very poor performance compared to other VR games, and even the same game in 4k. It's really inexcusable.

I'm writing to everyone who isn't part of the DCS VR cult. The VR experience in DCS is embarrassingly bad. 40fps if acceptabe on a super high end computer? That's insanity, when all my other VR apps run 120-144hz, and I can run DCS at 4k on high settings, with crystal clear everything, at over 100fps. To anyone considering VR at this point, don't make the same mistake I did! It's not then close to being a viable alternative. Difficulty spotting, low FPS, difficulty reading cockpit gauges without leaning in or zooming, low combat effectiveness, motion sickness... There's just no reason to jump into DCS VR at this point except for a short lived novelty.
-
If you get 40fps only, you've been playing a slide show. And a low resolution one at that. The question remains, why am I able to run over 100fps in 4k, but 40fps in VR?
-
40fps is unplayable in VR. How come I get over 100fps in 4k at high settings for everything?

I think the sensors for brakes actuate without pressing them down, I think it's from feet pressure on the wood. Mine do the same thing, and I just keep my feet off the pedals themselves if I don't want to use the brakes.
-
That's too bad, since most people run Nvidia cards anyway, it really screws over a large portion of the users. I'd rather have awesome performance on one platform instead of crappy performance on all platforms. Honestly though, the reason for it is most likely lack of resources to devote to the implementation.
-
It's obvious something is seriously wrong with the engine, it just can't handle the simulation and graphics pipeline simultaneously. You can be in the sim with no other active simulation occurring (no units), and performance is still deficient. We might not be able to see improvement until the engine is rebuilt from the ground up.

Not sure, I run the 8v8 Hornet instant action mission both with 4k + TIR and Valve Index, and with 4k I'm able to see everything I need to have high combat effectiveness, and I feel like an actual combat pilot, able to read my instruments and engage bandits with high effectiveness. With the Valve Index, I can't see incoming missiles, I can't spot friendly vs foe, I can't see direction of other aircraft, I can barely read the DDIs. I feel like I'm a blind Hornet pilot with a death wish. With the Index, either I increase the visual quality to the point of extremely low FPS, or I decrease the visual quality to the point of low combat effectiveness and still low-ish FPS. I think the problem is DCS's VR implementation. I'm going to stick with 4k+TIR for now until ED gets their act together, which, sad to say, will probably need a completely new DCS simulation and graphics engine built from the ground-up, something that ED probably can't do at the moment considering the huge workload they currently have.
-
The head movement is smooth, but actual environment is not (stick, outside world). Strangely, DDIs are smooth in their animations like radar sweep.
-
It's a brand new system with fresh windows install.
-
PD 1.5 Even on the lowest settings, moving the joystick in the cockpit is not fluid motion and there's judder everywhere. Something is obviously messed up with DCS's implementation. Maybe ED needs to do something regarding the canted screens?

9900k @5.0ghz, 32gb ram, 2080ti FE. I get around 100fps on high at 4k on all the maps. I get under 50fps but little environmental or cockpit clarity using the Index in DCS. No problem with X-Plane. And every other VR game I play runs flawlessly at extremely high FPS. :shocking: DCS VR performance is terrible, and the visual quality you get for it is embarrassing.
-
Case in point: Saying that VR cockpits are easily readable is a subjective assessment. I bought into that. Turns out, they were lying about being able to read the cockpit instruments easily.
-
I did research it, but VR is subjective, and the experiences of users is important in the overall consideration. The unfortunate thing is the cultist echo-chamber here keeps extolling the virtues of current gen VR, however my actual experience shows that they were clearly lying, and still fall-back on the tiresome "it feels like you're in the cockpit!" Yeah, it feels like you're legally-blind in a cockpit with diminished combat effectiveness. Frankly, they need to tone down their evangelism for an expensive device which does not deliver on their description.
-
I already use the PG27UQ as my primary display, I got it for $1600 new (discount + employee discount). I consider that far superior in DCS experience than the Index. I guess I'll plan on keeping the Index for non-DCS games. You'd be better served going with the Varjo, tbh.
-
I knew about the issues with VR before like difficulty spotting and reading instruments and cockpit text, I thought the Valve Index addressed some of them with lower SDE and higher refresh rate, LCD instead of OLED, and canted screens, and better FOV. Unfortunately, I bought the Index based on those assumptions, and I was flat out wrong. The problem with DCS VR will always be too low of screen resolution. I learned my lesson: don't listen to the people who exclaim the wonders of VR for DCS, because they're biased and are too absorbed in their "you feel like you're there" gimmick to actually have a decent perspective on the whole thing. If you're expecting to be able to perform at the same level in VR as using a 4k screen, you need to have that expectation severely pared down. It's not then close. Don't waste your time and money with VR at this point.
-
You should definitely wait if you think you might be performing at the same level of a high resolution monitor. Super high resolution VR is absolutely necessary for an equivalent experience, and current VR solutions are nowhere close to that.
-
I feel like I just wasted $1000 on the Index because I was expecting a level of performance that was promoted by the pro-vr users here. Turns out that they were either lying or personally oblivious to the actual negatives of VR. I don't want other users to make the same mistake I did by trusting your biased and inaccurate perspective on DCS VR.

Is VR Still King Over Ultrawide Monitor With TrackIR?

Sadly, the pilot is neither near-sighted, nor far-sighted, just BLIND. -
Is VR Still King Over Ultrawide Monitor With TrackIR?

Yeah, you really feel like a near-blind pilot in a cockpit with little combat effectiveness because you can't see anything clearly.  -
Are you serious?? Real pilots don't lean in to read the DDIs. they're able to read everything because they are using their eyeballs in real reality. Why are you attributing your own experience in the cockpit of the Hornet as the actual experience of Hornet pilots? The whole point of 4k clarity is to be able to see all the instruments without zooming or leaning in.
-
It's not to say there aren't other uses for VR. I was playing Google Earth VR and had a great time. I'll probably play some horror games in VR. However, I'm not going to fool myself into thinking VR is the end all be all in DCS. The VR mentality here is cultist.
-
I can read all my instruments in a normal seated position in front of my 4k monitor without zooming. I can identify aircraft easily and spot ground targets easily on my 4k monitor. I can see incoming missiles easily. I can see terrain features, details, and general beauty of DCS with my 4k monitor. With the Index, I can do the above at maybe 30% of the level I did with the 4k monitor. I would have been happy with 70% of the viewing ability with the switch to VR. 30%? Hell no... You VR guys are smoking something fierce if you think you are even remotely close to the performance of a 4k HDR monitor. Here's another way to put it: the US Navy has eyesight requirements for a reason.... The US Navy would never accept a candidate who can't see detail in the cockpit, much less outside the airplane.
-
What are you talking about? Hornet in VR, even in the Index, is basically unplayable compared to a 4k monitor. I thought maybe the improvement in SDE would differentiate the Index, but I was wrong. VR is simply unplayable with the Hornet. I might give the WW2 birds and Huey a shot. I was hoping the KA50 would be ok, but I seriously doubt it. If anyone is on the fence between 4k and VR for advanced aircraft, please don't make the same mistake I did.
