  1. "Kwitcherbitchin 7th" 368thFG 397thFS, flown by the 368th leading ace, Major (at the time of depicting it) Randall "Pinky" Hendricks. Hendricks shot down four Fw190's in a single mission on the 12th June 1944 and a Bf109 on the 22nd June 1944. I skinned this aircraft back in the days of "IL2:46" but in the years since I have lost my research material so had to rely on a couple of poor photographs and a decal sheet for reference. I don't like doing the latter as they are often full of errors, but needs must.... I will be submitting this for the competition when it has been uploaded to user files.
  2. "Five by Five" was a P-47D-30-RA flown by Colonel Joe Laughlin, C.O. of the 362nd Fighter Group, 9th Air Force from August 1944 to the end of the war. It is depicted as it would have appeared in 1945. Laughlin claimed three aerial kills and is credited with sinking a German Light Cruiser in Brest harbour on the 25th August 1944. Notes: The cowling access catches have been reduced to the correct amount: twelve rather than the 26(!) depicted on the template, and are now correctly orientated to the normal map. The front cowling panel line has also been moved rearwards to its correct location. The cowling rivets have been correctly aligned to the NM and the superflous rivets (a lot of them) erased. (There are far too many rivets modelled on the NM and drawn on the cowling area, about two thirds should be removed.) The Swastika victory symbols are deliberately reversed as they were on the actual aircraft. Why did he have them painted this way you ask? Don't know. The aircraft serial number in the data block has the last three digits unevenly applied. Again this has been done deliberately as they were applied this way on Laughlins' aircraft. I have also drawn all the art including the "Dumbo" noseart and replaced the maintenance stenciling with a more accurate font and corrected spelling errors. 3. It is on my "to do list" and have done it for "IL2:46" back in the day.
  4. You couldn't tell me could you? I'm proper puzzled!
  5. Thanks. Glad you like it mate. I'm going to get to try and get to grips with the official template as I have been using warlord64's, for which I am very grateful, but I need to learn the roughmet process properly now. So I may go quiet for a week or two.
  6. "Helen Jo" was flown by Lt Orrin Wahl of the 358th Fighter Group, 365th Fighter Squadron, 9th Air Force. The skin includes reskinned paper drop tanks to a more accurate silver colour. I've also done a squadron coded generic. Both up at User Files now. "Helen Jo": https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3314989/ Generic: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3314990/ "Helen Jo" Squadron coded Generic.
  7. I'd like to see an option for the "TseTse" (pronounced "Tet-see", after a rather nasty little African fly that gives humans African trypanosomiasis, also known as "sleeping sickness"). The TseTse Mosquito was armed with either a Molins or Vickers 57mm (6 pounder) semiautomatic field artillery piece firing a solid steel projectile at high velocity. I think the RAF fielded about 60 of them in the anti shipping/anti U Boat, role. Their pilots loved them.
  8. Okay mate, thanks for cracking this.
  9. Okay, sorted it now. Disregard my two previous posts about the colour on the cowl flap edge. That was my fault, I had accidentally activated another layer, nothing to do with the prop hub colour! As far as I can tell, all you need to do is add these two lines to the LUA, as Megalax said: {"P47D_Fuz_Front_additional_set", DIFFUSE , "p47d_fuz_front", false}; {"P47D_Fuz_Front_additional_set", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC , "p47d_fuz_front_roughmet", false}; And that transfers your painted stationary spinner colour to the spinning hub, no need to paint anywhere else. I don't think you need the two extra texture files. Unless there's something I'm missing.
  10. Update: You do not have to paint that part, just paint the 2 prop hub parts that you paint to give the stationary painted spinner, as you normally do. It's the two new text lines in the LUA that you add that apply it to the spinner. But this is when it's adding the colour to the cowl flap. So I'm still testing.
  11. It appears that there is an unavoidable trade off at the moment. If you paint the spinner hub then, due to the parts location, it automatically paints the inside top edge of the fifth cowl flap down on either side. (see image below) Unfortunately, unless they adjust the template layout, I cannot see a way around this at the moment. It's not overly noticable, and I prefer to have the correctly coloured spinner, but it looks like we will have to live with it for now.
  12. It's not really an issue regarding using the modelviewer, I just was concerned something was corrupted/broken. Thanks.
  13. Megalax, you Sir are an absolute legend!!!! Thanks mate. that has been really pi... annoying me!
  14. With shadows on in the ModelViewer2 I am seeing little squares over the surfaces of the wings and horizontal tail. Turn shadows off and they disappear. Anyone know if this is a bug or the cause/cure? And if they do could they enlighten me please? This does not happen in the sim. Cheers. Bo.
  15. Of course it would be absolutely spiffing if you could replicate that wonderful "Vulcan Howl" in the sound....traditional airshow car alarm accompaniment optional, obviously.
  16. I hope you make the template available old boy, I would like a crack at some of the different schemes for the old "Tin Triangle".
  17. The practice of putting insignias on the underside of both wings of ETO P-47's, especially 8th Air Force groups like the 56th, was extremely common. In fact I would say that more had this extra insignia applied in the 8th Air Force than didn't. It's use in the 9th Air Force, whilst still done quite a lot, was not as widespread. The extra insignia was introduced to try and reduce the incidents of "friendly fire" from both allied fighters, bomber gunners and flak gunners, due to the P-47's superficial similarities in appearance to the Fw190. It was not unusual for one of the insignias on the underside, usually the starboard side, to be considerably larger than standard. So the use of it on the DCS default 353rd Fighter Group skin is correct. Below is Capt Fred Christensen's "Miss Fire/Rozzie Geth II", he was the fourth highest ace with the famed 56th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. The size difference between the insignias is very noticable. ***But why you would see this on a 3rd party skin, if it wasn't already put there by the skinner. is more of a mystery.***
  18. Very cool. Looking forward to this. I served at RAF Waddington between 1980 and 1983 during the last years of the Vulcan. I watched as they prepared the Vulcans for Operation Black Buck. We knew something was afoot, because the techies were working full night shifts! There are few sights like watching a four full squadron scramble, (they were 9,44,50,and 101). We especially liked the sight because it meant the exercise was over for us on the ground and we could finally go to bed. Unfortunately cameras were not allowed on the base so I could never record the show.
  19. I'll have a crack at that and a few other 358th.
  20. Captain Fred Christensen's "Miss Fire/Rozzie Geth II" plus a part coded 62nd Fighter Squadron generic version for flight numbers. "Rozzie Geth" referred to Christenen's college girlfriend: Rosamund Gethro. The noseart is based upon the attached photo rather than the many incorrectly coloured illustrations and decals out there. These skins also include reskinned 108 gallon paper drop tanks, which I have made a brighter sliver more in keeping with the paper tanks appearance, rather than the default grey which is more akin to the early metal versions of this design. The stripes have been removed from the main gear covers deliberately, to replicate the appearance of this aircraft in late July 1944, after it had been repaired following battle damage to that area during a mission on the 5th July 1944 and having had parts replaced but not painted. The error regarding the tip of the pitot tube was spotted after the screenshots were taken and corrected before release....I just couldn't be bothered to do all the screenshots again. What can I say? "Bo_Nidle" by name, Bone Idle by nature. Now up at User Files: "Miss Fire/Rozzie Geth": https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3314875/ Generic: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3314877/
  21. Thanks. I'm still trying to work out how to paint the spinner when its in motion. When I can do that I'll update all my P-47's that should have painted spinners.
  22. I'm very interested in finding this elusive part too. (I checked in ModelViewer but without success).
  23. This P-47D-28 was flown by Capt George Lamb of the 356th Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Group, 9th Air Force from November 1944 until early February 1945. Lamb would end the war with 7.5 kills. The 356thFS were very identifiable by their distinct display of stars around the cowling. However the colour of the background to the design has been misconstrued as being Insignia Blue for decades. Recent research has confirmed that this background was in fact black. When the 354th received their P-47's the cowlings were all painted black and the stars and white nose painted over them. Careful study of the few photos of the 356th's P-47's will actually confirm this. It was Maj. Richard E. Turner, CO, who devised the design that would be used to identify the unit and so instructed S/Sgt. Mark Hanson and Sgt. Louie to paint a ring of white stars on the black cowlings. I think they would have looked nicer in insignia blue, but there you go... 24. Here you go Javelina1. These were done just prior to me getting to grips with roughmets so they are the "old style" spec metal finish. I had intended to upgrade them to roughmets at some point but haven't got around to it yet. https://www.mediafire.com/file/phkf6fil8cxa4uv/197thFIS_Arizona_ANG.zip/file https://www.mediafire.com/file/b1bhllc7sbqxa74/197thFIS_Arizona_ANG-Cactus_Blank.zip/file Enjoy.
