Uh-oh. on the one hand, that doesnt bode well for any software. On the other hand, if it affects all software, I imagine Valve will be on top of it. Would it definitely be up to ED to support or could it come from Valve? As part of SteamVR?

What smell would we need for DCS? Check this out

Could we add a physics-simulated dangly smelly tree in the cockpits? -
I work in regulatory affairs. I can tell you that products intended for different countries must comply with different sets of regulations. On top of that, you've got things like customs. And if any of you have experience with bureaucracy, you'll know how much of a pain this can be, and how timelines easily slip. For example, it is possible to have shipments held up at customs at the destination country until you can provide them with certain documentation/information that they request. If we dont have that information to hand [could be proprietary information belonging to one of our suppliers] we would then have to seek it. This is just one way a single country could have its release delayed, there are countless others. It is often the case that tranches of product for different countries can have differing release dates. Having a global release on a single date, can be an absolutely monumental task. And before you're all like "Bah. Who needs regulations. Gummint gettin in the way of the PEOPLE" well its all fun and games/pointless paper exercises until you find a shipment of paracetamol contaminated with cyanide or a company in a questionable state buying a seemingly innocuous chemical product that is 90% by mass, a precursor to a chemical weapon (both real examples, not my company). Although mostly its things like correct safety instructions. The Nordic countries, for example, have extremely tight regs on environmentally hazardous substances. So the pigment making your plastic grey might be fine in one country, but banned in another, so then you either need to reformulate the whole line, create a specific formulation for that one country, or just accept that you cant sell there. Its not unheard of for this to be found out at the last minute.

Just wondering how you got an estimated availability date? The page for the full kit says "shipped by" aug 31st but I presume thats a latest date (ignoring the inevitable further delays) and they will start going down the list of preorders before that. What exactly did you read about the reverb graphics? Anything on top of the known mura and fixed IPD issues? Im leaning towards the index, its a more complete package, and its displays, whilst not the highest res, seem to be pretty high specced. Its too bloody subjective. One review says one thing, another says "thats not a thing, but this is". Its like trying to choose which spectacles to buy, but we all have different prescriptions... Actually its exactly like that.

I dont know what headset you are using, but if its Vive pro resolution (2880*1600, total) or above, you are obviously pushing more pixels through the HMD, even with that monstrous monitor. 2880*1600 is roughly double the pixels of 2560*1440, quite a big jump. But if its gen 1 resolution (2160*1200, give or take, depending on brand), then you would be pushing less through an HMD. I know its not completely all about raw pixels - I wonder if there is harder drain on resource generating 2 viewpoints?
-
I cant wait until then, I sold my Vive pro so I could get on this years bandwagon (since the index was announced at about the price I bought my vive for, and the Reverb even lower) before the value of the Vive dropped too far. Im VR-less at the moment and feeling strong withdrawal. *** Frankly, I dont take anybody's identity on reddit seriously. I work in a professional, corporate environment too, like a great many people, and would not risk my job just to look cool on a forum. Which, make no mistake, is what he is doing if he is legit. Im CERTAINLY not going to "get authorisation" to reveal information, to look cool. Im not kidding, corporate confidentiality is serious business. I could get myself fired just by typing 3 sentences right here, like insta-fired, and Im not even talking particularly controvertial stuff, or anything that would interest you, I only work in the construction products industry. If its HP, and confidential stuff about a MAJOR GLOBAL product launch and hes chatting on reddit...well hes faking Im pretty sure. Or he's an idiot. Either way.

I would consider it a *huge* waste to solely use VR for simming. I used it to help design our new apartment! Its just such a kick in the nuts that the best resolution headset on the horizon doesnt come with the best "everything else".
-
Thats weird, I agree with everything you said, except I have crashed and did not experience this sound thing. My view spawns at a reasonable point and the explosion doesnt blow out my eardrums. Not an issue that has appeared on my radar at all. This was with Vive Pro, if that could make a difference. Its exactly as I said, no (computer) problem is ever experienced the same by everybody - but that doesnt mean the problem doesnt exist! You are living all our best lives, thank you! I've only got.....4 more decades to go! Probably!

Some interesting stuff here: https://uploadvr.com/valve-index-bellevue-photos/ I didnt know Valve was involved with Occulus as well!

I had some funny greyouts with my vive when I was fiddling with my base station layout. I have quite a small computer room and I think they were too close and I was getting FOV issues, or potentially base-to-base communication issues. Make sure there are no nearby obstructions that could limit FOV, make sure they have clear line of sight to each other at all times and that there are no nearby reflective surfaces like glass cabinets or windows.
-
It may be an issue with detail settings and hardware setup, I had a Vive pro, but couldnt get decent FPS on anything other than minimum settings, and MFDs were unreadable without zoom or bending down do look closer. In my experience, no bug or problem is ever perceived in the same way by everybody, which makes sense given the huge vector-space of hardware setups.

1st gen HMDs are going to give you a sub-par VR experience, issues with reading instruments etc. But it would at least give you a feel for what VR can offer (its a gamechanger, literally. Personally I would recommend NOT discounting its uses outside of simming) if you consider £199 an acceptable price to "trial" VR before you drop a larger amount on a gen 1.5/2 set. Right now is juuuuuuuuust before the perfect time to get into VR. There are a large number of new headsets just about to release with widely varied features. None of us know for sure yet, which ones will have what relative pros&cons, all we can do is speculate based on the specs given to us. *** I have heard that a single sensor is sufficient for seated, sim use. However, these things can be somewhat subjective (room geometry, seat+desk positioning, personal shape and size, personal movement types etc etc etc ad infinitum)
-
Just curious, what are your monitor resolutions?
-
no disresepect, but <groooooaaan> lol! was gonna say "back OT" but theres literally no new news yet, on either headset. ***EDIT*** Oh, Ive got a question - so I had a Vive pro. The Index has the same resolution, but increased FOV, which means larger viewable area. What does that mean for perceived resolution on a pixels-per-degree basis? Will it essentially be lower? Or is it something like less "dead space" on the screen?
-
Its seeming more and more like the HP is a one-trick pony. It a good trick and it does it well, but one trick only. Might be enough for some kinds of use. But this is not "enthusiast" levels of capability. Im very impressed with the reports of the displays, not very impressed at all at the set as a package. So far.

100% would get an interface milled into my skull. I mean, as long as the reviews were good. Also, I fricken love The Matrix (the movie, not a hypothetical brain prison)

Is there a way to show other application in DCS VR?
p1t1o replied to ravenzino's topic in Virtual Reality
There is a program, but you have to purchase it seperately, its not expensive and it works great, but integration is the key. Eventually, Windows (et al.) will have an automated VR environment and I think that is what we are all looking for. -
Sorry for bring up OT stuff, but it is sideways related, as in its about problems and concerns with Razbams ability to develop modules, including the Harrier.

This is one of the things that I expect to become more refined as the VR software industry matures. Serious VR programs have only really started to enter the mainstream a few short years ago. I find, actually, that there are many software quirks that need to be improved, that we usually take for granted. Simple thing such as viewing your own desktop ought not to require a standalone program. When such things, amongst others, can be done natively in OS, things will start to get easier. Other things that should improve as the industry gains experience: VR user interfaces VR software integration More standardised VR environments and control schemes -
Right? I was wondering when reddit suddenly became a reliable source for anything. Oh Im sure you can build a display with 210deg FOV, but Im just not sure my actual eyes have that much...
-
Not just a well-known bug, but a critical bug. Busted radar in a fighter jet? Harrier is much newer, Im happy to give them plenty more time, but if it looks like its going to get half done and left by the wayside so they can start yet another module, I'll be keeping a much tighter grasp of my wallet.
-
Its hard information, Valve own those patents. True, none of them could be implemented, but its good insight. Over-speculation or extrapolation? Thats for other folk.
-
Yes, I just made an edit to my previous, it probably is the radar. I wasnt suggesting not buying EA, I was suggesting not buying from Razbam, whether EA or not.
-
lol maybe we can form a consortium where we each agree to get a different headset, share reviews and then all (except one lucky fellow) refund and purchase the winner? :pilotfly::pilotfly::pilotfly::pilotfly::pilotfly:
-
OT: We can NOT purchase, EA or otherwise, their next module. But of course, we will, because every aircraft is somebody's favorite, and nobody else is making air combat sims worth a dam. *** Question - in the absence of any other data, with any given Early Access product, what is the maximum reasonable time before full release? 3 years? A decade?
