  1. I recommend everyone who can ... to install Arma and try Zeus. There is nothing else like it ANYWHERE. Maybe Arma does not have the modelling on aircraft side of things as good as DCS but in every other area the technology is of the highest quality and ED and DCS players could learn a thing by seeing how they do they do it in Arma. Multiplayer is a great experience. Radio is built in and is of a high enough quality for public server usage. AI people will criticise but if you ask critics to point to a sim that can do the same things better, they can't find one. Criticisms of arcade are irrelevant because even in Arma it is up to the mission designer or the server admin or the zeus mission director and the players to provide the serious aspects of simulation. Truth is that for all the reality in DCS mostly it is used for flying deathmatch which is NOT realistic ... truly. I love DCS ... it could learn many things from Arma to improve. To jerk your knee and dismiss the solid work of other sims is to miss the opportunity to improve DCS. Just my opinion, you will have your own.
  2. It is good that estimate correctly the difficulties in coding AI. For all the time ED could spend, it would be thankless task and noone would be satisfied anyway. This is why I DO NOT suggest changing the AI. If I want to fly against something smart I will fly against other players. What I do suggest is that AI aircraft could use all the visual damage artwork that has been developed for the AFM aircraft.
  3. And this is why I installed the beta.
  4. KH just curious what you mean by the damage model of 10 years ago? I don't think it is possible to return to this way of doing things because 10 years ago there was only SFM aircraft. DCS level planes have an AFM/EFM, a SFM and maybe a specific AI SFM. But detailed damage is only shown for the AFM/EFM and only human controlled aircraft have this. I have no problem with the damage model at all. Simply I wish for the visual damage to be enabled for AFM,SFM and AI-SFM.
  5. Yes with Opentrack you can use DK2 as a TrackIR. I tried it. Yes you can setup curves in Opentrack so that the 1:1 movement is translated to whatever motion you want. If you don't mind setup this works. There are cheaper ways to get head tracking though ... this is a good solution if you already have a DK2 and you must have head tracking. My opinion is that DK2 goes the way of TrackIR very soon. Both old technology. If you want only headtrack ... wait for TrackIR price cuts or for new and better version of TrackIR.
  6. I kinda like historically accurate sorties. It's a sim so can you recreate something that actually happened? Of course maps are a major requirement as is the ability to configure the map elements to match conditions. Even though people are very gung ho about simulating HUGE scale conflict, DCS is not actually suited to that sort of thing at all. DCS however is quite well suited to simulating a single sortie with a smaller number of simultaneously active participants. It does small scale and accurate fairly well. Someone mentioned India Pakistan conflicts. I think these are well suited to DCS because the of the types of sorties and short length of the missions. DCS has the Hawk to stand in for the Gnat and we have Mig21s and Sabres. DCS also has Russian missile boats if you wanted to add other simulated events of those conflicts. India and Pakistan air wars actually did happen and are well documented, and we have the right DCS modules to model them right now. 1971 Air War ~40 aircraft lost. 1965 Air War +100 aircraft lost in combat. Also think the Secret Air War is interesting to explore but we would need a few exotic planes and a more well developed GCI/ATC side to DCS first.
  7. I understand why the AI have very tough planes that are either fully functional or crashing. The AI in DCS isn't smart enough to handle the damaged dynamics and if it was added it would probably use up all the processor time. I get that part. But I'm wondering if we just accept that as a fact maybe we could turn on some of the fancy visual damage for the AI planes, even if it sometimes looks a bit funny. Sure sometimes the AI might still be flying a plane that flies as if it has no damage even though DCS is showing a bit of wing missing. I'm willing to accept that if I can see that I'm actually dong some damage and that eventually I'll use all his hit points up and he'll drop out of the sky. The reason I noticed this is that I was making a plane damage torture test in LUA using Ian's Witchcraft Lua console. I was choosing parts of the AI plane and triggering little explosions to knock off bits but the AI would take all the damage I could dish without showing anything but bullet holes ... and then drop out of the sky. In this case I was only using the AI as my crash test dummy so I could make a mission with a scripted sequence that does the same thing to the players plane BUT I still think I'd like to see all the fancy aircraft falling to pieces work even against AI. This is especially true for modules I have bought.
  8. Say again. I think this is a winner .... send it on to Wags.
  9. Well Direct mode requires at least DirectX 10/11 so it can't be implemented any sooner than DCS 1.5.
  10. Is this just a question of going through the 1000 of args in modelviewer? I would help with this as long as we collate the information and share it.
  11. Great podcast with DArt and ANE abot LotATC. Doing tactical control interests me but I am a person with zero experience. Is it something you can learn on the virtual job?
  12. You should put country requests here but maybe skin requests you could put in the Liveries/Skins section. Still IAF vs PAF sounds pretty interesting. Hawk and C-101 would make good subs for the Gnat.
  13. If you use Google Translate it definitely says something silly in Russian. I see Russians advise to use Yandex for translation. http://translate.yandex.com/
  14. Just a question for curiosity. Which has more up to date C-101 Models and Livery - Steam OR DCS Openbeta. I noticed that the Textures and Livery for the C-101 are different in Steam and Openbeta EVEN though the version number for C-101 is the same. I opened the Texture zips to have a look because the Steam C-101 looked more shiny. Question is not important ... I ask only for curiosity.
  15. TrackIR and Oculus Rift VR support -> GT.driverViewPoint ?
  16. Bonesaw, that is interesting. If you want to see this in game - you will have to find a way to simplify your diagram (so it doesn't need a translation) and then post it in the Russian Combined Arms thread. This is where some ED devs hang out and talk about stuff like this. Some of the Russian ED devs are quite focused on making ground units and arms look right. Thread is here Russians love their ground units. This you know.
  17. There is a lovely TU-22 external model in DCS, was just looking at it now in Modelviewer. I was playing with model planes (don't judge). I love the look of this Cold War beast. I know it seats four ... I can see the little guys in the back. * OK Emp I'll add my pros for the TU-22M3 * TU-22M3: - Used by Soviet forces in Afghan and Chechen conflicts as a conventional bomber - In active service for decades practising maritime interception. - Would definitely give a US 'Fleet Defender' aircraft something to do.
  18. You think big Chromium. If you had let me know you were working on a ME mod a few months ago I probably could have helped you with it while the info was still fresh in my mind. What I was working on was an ME mod that let you choose custom liveries for vehicles and ships. I got the ME to save the info into the miz but in game it seems only aircraft can have different skins. If I was you I would put off any work until after the DCS 2.0 ME is released.
  19. Swither, Here is a summary of what I found when I was trying to do what you are trying to do. There is a function called declare_weapon() for adding new weapons and there is also a function called add_shape_table() which you might want to use but I think they only work in the Aircraft Mod Environment. These functions are not enabled in the Tech Mod Environment which handles Ground Vehicles, Ships and Ground Statics. Maybe you already know this but the Mod Environments are defined in "..Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Scripts\Database\db_mods.lua" I did try and enable some functions to work inside the TECH environment but when I tried to use them it lead to errors that crashed DCS. At this point I stopped experimenting because I didn't have time to investigate any further and I thought I'll wait and see what DCS 2.0 brings. If you still wanna try and get something working what you could try is to add your weapons or add items to the shape table by using the Aircraft Mod Environment. Put your definitions for new weapons inside an existing Aircraft definition. It is a hack but it might work. Definitely keep me up to date with how you go, add me to your friend list too. I am interested in Naval side of DCS in a big way and I'd like to see it advanced. :pirate:
  20. Why would Clint Eastwood steal it, if it wasn't good?
  21. The installer package gives me error "DCS World 1.2.16.39472 must be installed"
  22. No. CV1 isn't exactly just around the corner BUT you should still wait. The experience between DK2 and Vive/CV1 will be night and day. It isn't just resolution, for CV1 -the lenses are much better (no chromatic aberration, less distortion and the sweet spot for perfect focus is much larger) -more comfortable to wear -built in audio including mic The Vive will be a near identical package but using different tracking technology. I prefer the Vive tracking technology BUT which headset will have the better support in DCS? To see this you will have to wait. The DK2 is worth acquiring at this point only if you are developing software or assets for VR and you want a headstart.
  23. That is a silly suggestion. There is nothing fun about the F-15 and it doesn't have a clickable cockpit. :pilotfly:
  24. Just read this thread and I think every contribution is made in the right spirit and there is enough truth to go around AND around. I just came to comment that I am impressed that AvioDev is doing this kind of activity. Keep the fire, Avio but don't burn out. Also wouldn't it be kinda great if there actually was a DCS module that was suitable for children. Something with a system element but without requiring a 100 page manual. Something kid size with a 5 page manual and handful of buttons and switches. DCS: Avio Funjet?
