Finally got round to learning the MI8
JLX replied to Cowboy10uk's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
I agree that over-torquing the rotors would seem to be the most obvious issue when the generator failure warnings sound. The question is what caused the decrease in RPM? Mishandling the collective is definitely one possibility. I wondered about the APU because (and I acknowledge that this is just a guess) I thought leaving it running could interfere with normal rotor operation which in turn would affect the RPM and thus the ability of the generators to function properly. While I understand turbine and piston engines are very different, imagine driving your car with the starter motor constantly engaged. Anyway, even if the APU had nothing to do with this (or my) particular problem. I'd love to learn what the effects of leaving the APU on during flight would be. Anybody from Belsimtek care to chime in? Inquiring minds and all that... :book: -
Finally got round to learning the MI8

Did you re-watch the track file and figure out what happened? I had something similar happen once and noticed in the replay that I forgot to turn off the APU! I assumed that was the problem as I didn't notice anything else wrong but I don't know what the expected effects are if you leave the APU running. Always something new to learn... :-) -
Good suggestions. +1

Thank you! That's helpful. I wouldn't have thought to use it as an indicator of when cargo makes contact with the ground. Clever.

Thank you very much for the insight! It is extremely helpful to learn what we should be paying attention to as we practice. I'm not familiar (yet) with that control on the dashboard you circled. I need to read up on that but haven't noticed it in the manual. You mention course displacement. Does it show lateral drift using the dopper radar? As for: "Opportunity online to fly crew will be realized soon. As soon as it is made, whenever possible, I will help to master the helicopter." This would be AMAZING and a great opportunity! I hope to have the chance to learn more from you sometime :-D Thanks again!

Holy shit! Nice flying. Can you please explain how you did this? I'm serious. I know you are a Mi-8 pilot with a lot of experience, but a sim-amateur like myself without a downward facing cargo cam like the Huey (which is really a cheat) doesn't stand a chance. What visual cues do you use to line yourself up? How do you gauge the height differential between the top of the tower and your heli? Etc. Can you help us learn by telling us your thought process as you make a precision drop like this? These videos are great (and inspiring) perhaps you could narrate them briefly so we can understand your process as you're doing them? Anyway, I know you're not here to give flight lessons but it would be cool to get some insight from a real pilot of you feel so inclined. ☺

Ability to disable automatic field of view change at aircraft start up
JLX replied to Dunravin's topic in DCS Core Wish List
+1 For a seemingly benign "feature" it is surprisingly annoying and completely useless. I imagine this would be trivial to remove but relegated to the bigger-fish-to-fry-havent-got-around-to-it list. Would love to see this irritation nixed sooner than later. -
I don't have anything to contribute to such an effort but this is a really good idea! I wonder if ED is planning (or could be persuaded) to support this. If any ED are able to comment, that would be great. Regardless, great initiative vicx! We're going to need to squeak every last bit of juice out of our systems for VR. Good luck with the project. I'll be watching closely. Perhaps someone like Bartek could help with the textures?

I don't know if it's possible or not but I think it would be great fun to learn to fly! It's so unique.

Yes, I was confused by this too! The Huey has BOTH the indicator AND the camera. I was expecting the Hip to have both as well but it only has the indicator. If possible, I'd like the Hip to have both too. The indicator is great for picking up cargo but it's the camera view that's needed when trying to accurately place the cargo down. The AI Flight engineer voice guidance is very cool! But, I'd like to have the option of the camera for precision drops too.

Are there plans to add the kneeboard bookmarking feature in the MiG-15 to the Mi-8 (and ideally ALL modules!) I LOVE that bookmarking feature. So handy! Makes the kneeboard MUCh easier to navigate especially when you add your own custom pages. :-)

+1 That would be very helpful. Nice summary Art-J.

When assigning HOTAS buttons, often (but not always) the depressed button will not register and I must hold the button down before it is recognized. It appears to be just when configuring my keys as they seem to work fine while flying. This delayed behaviour (which was present for me in 1.2.6 and earlier) went away in the first 1.5.0 builds and all my joystick keys registered instantly when setting up my binds. However, it's back now with 1.5.1 I'm wondering if it might be related to a problem (and others like it) mentioned in this thread. Here's a excerpt: EDIT3: FFS, I found the problem. It's the good old depress bug DCSW has always had, where the cockpit triggers have a big chance of not firing if you don't keep pressed the button for a few moments. Since it was manual release I was just pressing the pickle button on the HOTAS for an instant, while it seems to register fine if I keep it pressed for half a second or so. I realize this is a bit obscure but it may help narrowing it down if it's related to changes introduced in 1.5.1 Edit: I'm running DCS vanilla with no mods.

I've had fairly consistent in game crashing in (so far) Mi-8, A-10C, UH-1H & MiG15. So, it doesn't appear module specific. The last build prior to this one didn't crash on me a single time (using all of the same modules) There hasn't been a repeatable function that has caused the crash. For example, in the Mig15 I was simply closing on a target. Not the most helpful bug report but unfortunately, there isn't a simple repeatable set of actions that can reproduce the crashes. However, just the fact that this build crashes fairly often compared to the last one which never did is significant. Attached is my dxdiag in case that helps. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'm running DCS 1.5.1 vanilla w/ no mods. DxDiag.zip

FANTASTIC! [emoji2] [emoji106]

Q: What is the fidelity level of the flight model? It seems sometimes new developers start with simplified flight models and plan to get more advanced later on. Considering the extremely high quality of the existing helicopter modules, I'm wondering how the Gazelle will compare in this regard. Thanks!

The fix works perfectly. Kudos for such incredibly fast and efficient support!

I'd be happy too. Email sent as well.

FWIW, I also have a similar issue and assumed what you stated above: slow texture load times. I assumed everyone has the same issue but if that's not the case, then perhaps it is something related to our gfx/systems? But it seems unintuitive to me that 7950/7970 would be slower at texture loading!? I'm running Win10x64 w/ Radeon 7950HD 3G on the latest (as of this writing) Catalyst drivers (15.201.1151-150821a-188665E) and have everything on a SSD. I've only tested with Tacview evaluation version as well but have signed up for the Pro group buy and will hopefully get to test with that soon. What I do as a matter of habit now is start Tacview and zoom/rotate until I've "force loaded" the entire (in my case DCS) map. The pausing/stuttering is very bad during this period, but afterwards (until restarting the program) everything is very smooth. I didn't report it as a bug as I thought of it as an inefficiency rather than bug and assumed it was universal. However, if that's not the case, it would be great if initial performance could be improved. Here is my dxdiag as well in the hope that it might help spot any common conditions. DxDiag.zip

Dynamic campaigns! Not just dynamic but with added variety and just plain more of them. There are still bugs in some of the missions included with the modules. I'd like to see in-depth and and highly polished campaigns with really high production value as flight sim'ing for me is still a single player affair. A better ATC system was a very close second. Looking forward to checking out Hollywood's VIACOM 2.0! But I'd love to see some much more sophisticated and flexible radio implementation within DCS itself. VR (both Rift and Vive) wasn't on the list but I'm assuming that's a no brainer ;-)

Wonderful!!! Cargo is a big part of what makes helicopters fun. I would love to see graphical representations of internal cargo too for both the Hip and the Huey. For example it would be great to look in the back and see how many passengers you've picked up! Thanks for giving this bird the attention it deserves. I think prolonged 'betas' are a little too prevalent in DCS and it only goes to further Belsimtek's already excellent reputation that they are taking the time to complete and polish their existing modules! Thanks for the report DE! Nice to hear a DCS-centric opinion that confirms what many others have reported around the interwebs. This reinforces my decision to definitely grab the Vive and only more optionally consider the Rift. Here's hoping DCS will have support for both ready by their respective launches. [emoji2]

Thanks to all for the info (and links to it). I guess we'll just have to be patient but I do hope we get a bit more concrete news before we early adopters need to make a decision and plunk down some cash for a HMD. I'd be surprised if they weren't able (or don't want) to support both the Vive and Rift. Likely it's more a matter of "when" than "if". Regardless, I hope that each platform will get developer attention based on their merits rather than exclusivity/favoritism tied to monetary incentives. A terrible practice which is already far to prevalent IMHO. Bring on the VR!
-
I hope DCS will support it! All indications I've read so far seem to suggest the Vive is a better overall experience than the Rift. I am definitely going to pick up a Vive and am only only optionally planning on the Rift. Reports of better motion tracking, reduced eye strain and negligible motion sickness are convincing! I'd really love an official word from ED about support plans. We are all going to need to make VR purchase decisions before too long and of course DCS is at the top of my most desired VR games! ED, can we please get some Vive support intentions... please? Thanks!
