  1. Yoink... http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2009/04/15/325156/usaf-selects-datalink-to-bridge-communications-gap-between-f-22-and.html
  2. Yes, placing advanced aircraft in the Middle East would be desastrous, not to mention a certain jewish nation that has them already. Now the potential enemy are some Mig-29s, updated F-5s and some other outdated aircraft. That keeps the balance as those cultures have a more recent history of violence (or better said: continuing). So bringing more arms there would only mean more unnecessesary deaths, turmoil, insurgency, ie freedom for the people there (anarchy). The established order wants to prevent that, so no shiny tech over there. S-300/400 can't be used to attack people on the ground, so either it's shooting down airspace violators, or sparrows :D
  3. Here here! Seems a little strange though, the program was halted, the prototypes were either cut up or placed in a museum. Sounds April's Fools to me. Especially the X-47B or something coming (carrier-borne UCAV).
  4. Seems like you were using some very powerful psychotropics there buddy. :D Ah, the joy of translators... Forget it, if you don't know the language better wait for a real translation because the machine translators can't do english -> russian, english -> french perhaps, but russian has slightly more difficult grammar than 'our' (european) languages. Those inflatable tanks are funny, I imagine seeing a grainy video from a UAV, and a tank flying off due to a gust :D
  5. Seems they are finally starting to use their heads, and not the organ that makes you hungry for money. Still, Lockheed has an extensive bribing history, and I'm sure they're still at it (judging by my own country, with all the unsubstantieted pro-JSF whinnig). The YF-23 is said to be faster as well, but the best thing was its looks, man, that thing had some sleek curves. The F-35 can only be saved now if it's produced in large numbers, otherwise it will cost more than the F-22 per airframe. So this is a good move, and since there is no nation that could threat the US, other than with MAD, the F-22 will not be used that often (maybe to greet rusting Tu-95s near Alaska). The problems are now mostly on the ground, and oppose the curent establishment in some way, and since those people don't have an airforce it's quite pointless to have hundreds of F-22 wasting American, and in turn the world's ;) tax money.
  6. But... More F-35s, man, I really like that jet, great optical system, cool helmet, and a worthy F-16 replacement :) Cons: Noise, though I don't live near an AB, still noise will upset a lot of people. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090406/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/defense_budget Ripped from airliners.net:hehe:
  7. How about the Kfir, that was a Jewish Rafale copy? :D
  8. Oh, confused one 'funder of terror' (and reason to spend money on counter terrorism ;)) with another... The K-36 design philosophy was: Get the pilot out WITHOUT INJURIES, and not 'as fast as possible/quick chute, what happens to the body is not my concern' like our seats have. And you should care, because most pilots stillwant to fly afterwards, the tens of millions € that went into the training justifies that, and being bedridden or paralyzed is not that much better than being dead. So it does matter, too bad weight and cost seem to outweigh human life, and that is pathetic as those men and women are raging OUR wars.
  9. Still, shouldn't you be in a thousand pieces by the time you detect something is chasing you? Seems to me like a more psychological reassurance for the pilots. Or the adversary is a Mig-19 with one working cannon, if that's the case, the chances of that pilot shooting you down are pretty slim anyway. If other sensors (wingman/awacs/ground) can detect it, then you'll have enough time to make a nice turn, and shoot a radar guided missile, if not, then you're screwed and the 'attacker' is making a dumb move.
  10. No, no, ballistic missiles with a max range of 2500km for the S-300PMU2 (S-400 for export), or targets with a max range of 3500km for the S-500. But even then, the interception range is 200-300 km, not more. And the US already knows how the S-300 works, as Greece have them in active service. And Israel has a jammer to counter the S-300, so it's your old make one thing better, then there will be better measures to counter it, and so on.
  11. Malfunction or not, that is a case of pilot induced oscillation, should have kept his cool. OTOH, if there was not enough thrust to go around, then they could have ejected earlier, sparing us the noobish scene of PIO. I'm not one of those branwashed anti-Iran people that think the country is some terrorist hole (Saudi Arabia, US' best friend is however, yet they have block 60 F-16s). But this look like poor airmanship, although I wasn't in that cockpit at the time. K-36 seats get you waaay up high, so you can have a nice view of the flames. :P Remember a ducumentary from pilot.strizhi.info (Smotr) on the Mig-31, and it had a video fragment of a slow speed ejection, while still on the runway. Well, those seats get really some air time, the first time I saw it I was like wow, that's twice as high as British/American seats. Oh, and the trajectory was straight up, Martin Baker/Douglas Escapac seats tend to pitch forward. If boeing had won the JSF competition, and some congressman wasn't informed that there would be a russky designed ejection seat in the F-32, then we'd see more K-36 videos on youtube/liveleak :) Oh well, I'm sure the British are catching up, they have bridle-less foot restraints on the Mk.16, seems like the Mk.18 seat will have a windblast deflector, arm guards and maybe two tubes extending on ejection ;) BTW, no British/US seat will match the K-36 in the near future because all Martin Baker does is making the seat, and that is not the whole package that is ejected. Zvezda designed everything, from the oxygen bottle to the small pyro charge to pop down the sun visor on ejection. And that makes the K-36 a good seat, everything is designed in unison, without subcontractors trying to make the helmet specifications by cutting corners...
  12. Don't know the story behind it, and it may be a repost, but this L-39 flight video (and a Russian song about a F-4 Phantom pilot) is quite cool, as they fly 'French' low. http://rutube.ru/tracks/1605065.html?v=54d8ce562e3e94a2cef10dc737051afe
  13. Well, there is some very 'interesting' stuff flying around already, just nobody confirming its existence, that about the claim that plasma fields seriousely cut down the resistance, think ufo sightings and such. Maybe like an extreme form of ionic wind. In either case there are some pretty hefty things flying around all over the globe, and most of them, if not all are not natural phenomena. And the antimissile potential is already confirmed, so at least it's a plausible way to deviate ballistic objects. My physics are rusty, but in the amateur video titled Angels don't play this H.A.A.R.P., it is said that radio waves can bounce off a plasma cloud in the ionosphere (~600km up), and be redirected over the horizon in that manner. Don't know if it's true, the person doing the telling is a physics teacher and a son of some American congressman. P.S., The video is a compilation of serveral different aspects of plasma, and is cut up so bad that the story is incoherent. It says the Russians started with the facility in the early nineties, that a plasma cloud enveloping an aircraft could reduce its resistance tenfold. And that in 1992 during a test with an artillery shell showed that the shell deviated from its path due to the cloud.
  14. H.A.A.R.P. is powerful as well. has other applications as well, makes it possible to temporarily make a 'hole' in the ionosphere, ie letting the cosmic rays penetrate (a certain 'cylinder' that extends into space), and watch them fry. Or let RF energy counce off the plasma cloud (use it like a 'lens', or giant radar dish), directing it over the horizon for surveillance, early warning or jamming. Very 'interesting' applications, wonder how much of it has been already done.
  15. Revival always sounds good, too bad Boeing can't bring those back :( :P (also 'Nam era btw)
  16. What about all those Soviet ICBMs that use lattice fins? And that missile launched torpedo? Lattice fins are certainly useful for those missiles... The Russians are already designing the follow-up to the R-77 and R-73 family, so if there will be a new R-77 variant, it certainly would not be used by them. The IRIS-T uses TVC for initial manouvering, so wether it would have lattice fins, or no fins at all, it will still turn due to the working engine. The R-77 has the advantage to do high alpha at the beginning and the end of the trajectory, so, when a medium (or visual) range target pops up, it will have a high off-bore capability due to the draggy fins. Also remember that missile guidance logic is not the same as in lock-on, there are various attack algorythms, written to preserve kinetic energy, or use it all up for that last turn. Combine that with the 'Gramps', the R-27ER and you can keep the enemy defensive until he reaches close enough for the R-77. Oh well, if India/Pakistan will cause some upstir, we will have some solida data on that. Still, the R-77 is obsolete by now, liquid (gel) propellants allow for throttleable rocket engines, that may be the future. Time will tell.
  17. Some radar bands, stealth (ie, severely reduced detection range), in other wavelengths, it's not (or barely). As for data-linking, well, the Soviet Union did much more extensive datalinking in the late eighties, and all weapon systems are designed to be able to communicate with eachother. In that aspect (commonality) the 'Russians' (don't know about current Russian designs, as Link 16 etc is getting more and more advanced, and the Soviet system may not. For costs/commonality reasons) always have had datalinks. Still, firing one missile from 400km away is just as effective as saying 'I'm going to shoot you in 3 minutes, you're sooo dead!'
  18. Old bird, remember having a Soviet made coloring book with the S-37 in it :D And no it wasn't the X-29, oh, and the book is from 1986, that's how 'marvellous/new/ingenoious' the thing is. I think the Pak-fa would be a mix between the F-35 and F-22, so no more big ass Sukhois :( The Su-35BM is the true marvel of Sukhoi, and could be exported in a short while. The thing is, will customers buy it, since its avionics, although modern for Russian standards, are outdated compared to the Rafale/Typhoon/Gripen.
  19. The current HUD software updates it at 24 fps, was 18 or so before. Still nice they can write new software for that eighties junk. P.S., which damage value corresponds to the APU (what part of the model, front, rear fuselage?) ? I'm fed up with blowing up from an apu fire, even when the thing is not running.
  20. Yeah did tat too, the bastard I was even hung MICA IRs under it. Unfortunately, I can't get the things to fire. Please tell me I'm too noob regarding the Vikhr firing sequence. ie: how can I launch them?
  21. Sharks with hindsight? Is that something like the Firefox? Like needing to think in Russian and other freaky brainwave reading/time compression (already have that, and thank you ED, crashes are great to watch at 0.03 rate:))
  22. Still, even if they can detect the AMRAAM's datalink signal, they would know that within 30 seconds they will be ejecting, or burning to death.
  23. Sounds a bit too Tom Clancy-ish. Haven't checked the Russian sites yet, but since I'm lazy, well, probably it's made up. If not, well, good luck Russia with your Tu-95/160, the reaplacement for the B-2 comes in 6 years ;) Good luck with PAK-FA as well. If they did that, then it's so pathetic, if it's made up, well, nice story, make a lomac mission out of it.
  24. It's not the main radar that does that alone. It has phased arrays in the leading edges inside the wings, those operate in the L-band or something (at least not the X band). And the 90km range is the maximum range, so in real life things can only be worse.
  25. Wow, what mod is that? With the grass stealth I mean. Oh well, our guys would try drying and smoking it, so what the hell :D
