I'm not sure where you're located, but in Baton Rouge (Class C airspace), I've always flown off the south ramp, flying Cessnas, and you do NOT have to contact ATC to start your aircraft, if you're flying VFR. You can even taxi around the entire south ramp without talking to ATC because the entire ramp is a non-movement area (or a movement area, I get the two backwards). If you want to enter onto an actual taxiway, however, you need to contact ATC.

Welcome to DCS and to the forums, if no one else has welcomed you yet!! Unfortunately, the F6F isn't released yet. ED hasn't shared any news, not even any screenshots, let alone videos of it, yet. If I were to estimate (please understand, this is purely a guess based on years of experience with following DCS releases), The F6F won't be released until late Q1 or Q2 of 2024 at the extreme earliest, emphasis on extreme. Even if ED released the first screenshots of it tomorrow, or more likely Friday, there would still be between six and nine, ten, or eleven months of hype/build through screenshots, mini update videos, and then the preorder (preorders from ED tend to last about three to six months on average, just depending) before it gets released. Really long story short, it won't be here for a while, unfortunately.

...but, we actually do have a map with Iran. The Persian Gulf map has a pretty big slice of southern Iran as one of its main landmasses.

Iirc, the Hornet's FBW system allows alot of the maneuverability to be maintained, though you'll still be severely G limited. I could be wrong, though. Anyone feel free to jump in and correct me.
-
You can absolutely do it in the Phantom. It's not like your missiles won't shoot if you have bombs on board. But your maneuvering potential will be severely limited if you need to defend against a missile or you get to the merge with all that weight and drag on your jet.
-
Yeah, the Hornet was the first fighter designed to be able to do that, and that engagement in ODS was basically a proof of concept. But any other aircraft prior to that point would have had to jettison their A2G loadout before engaging enemy aircraft.

In the book, I can't remember the exact reason they used dumb bombs over smart. Probably due to a lack of laser designator, if I had to guess. Their Nitehawk pods weren't very good. But Auto almost certainly kept them away from air defenses for the most part. There were some pretty hair-raising stories about being shot at when they did Auto dive bomb runs, but they mostly tended to do level or shallow-dive runs with Auto. I'll have to go back and read it again.

I've read Hornets Over Kuwait by Jay Stout several times, and from what I remember, they rarely carried guided ordnance, and almost always bombed in Auto mode with the dumb bombs, whether from blind radar designations, radar designations backed up by visual contact, or pre-planned coordinates. It seems to me like Auto would be used even with dumb bombs to try and stay out of the WEZ of enemy AAA and SHORADS. With CCIP you generally have to get pretty low to get the pipper on target. Why do it this way in DCS? I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I do it to replicate RW procedures and techniques, like what they did in the book. But if I'm doing a more modern scenario I'll usually use guided ordnance.

Anything like pilots notes cards for engine mgmt available?

Hey all. I've flown this mission many, many times, and can never complete it due to the MiGs most of the time, and SAMs the rest. The most frustrating part is that I can't get my wingman to do anything other than changing formation, and sometimes he even stops responding to those commands. He gets stuck in an endless loop of calling out contacts and won't do anything I order him to do, whether engaging the MiGs or attacking the primary target and returning to formation. It's incredibly infuriating, especially after flying the mission so many times with the same frustrating result. I'm on the proper frequencies, and have even tried putting my wingman on radio 1 and the AWACS on radio 2, and vice-versa. Can anyone give some advice and/or can BN or NL run this up the chain so it can get fixed, please? I'll attach a track file later once I figure out how to use Dropbox, but it'll be tomorrow at the soonest since it's late and I have work in the morning. Thanks! P.S. I'm on the latest OB, no mods installed

I believe the voice in the A-10 tutorials is Wags, but I could be wrong.

What Helicopter Module do you wanna see next?
Jetguy06 replied to Tank50us's topic in DCS Core Wish List
My vote is: Modern Uh-60 CH-47 (or SH-46, preferably both) AH-1 Vintage Bell H-13/Model 47 H-5/HO3S-1 H-19/HRS-2 HUP-1 or -2/H-25 H-21 Basically, any Korean-era helicopter will do -
Being a child can do that to perspective. The MiG-17 is actually only about three feet longer than the MiG-15 we have in the sim. It's comparable in size, but has a significantly more powerful engine, and a much tighter turn radius. I remember when I was a child visiting the USS Alabama, and thinking the 16-inch shells had to be tall enough to reach the ceiling in an average room. Going back as an adult and seeing them in my new perspective, I laughed at got big I previously thought they were.

There was a Thunderbird walk-around/cockpit tour video on Youtube I saw some time ago where the pilot explained the smoke was controlled by the DF Override switch. A similar video on the Blue Angels showed the smoke was controlled by the chaff/flare switch on the throttle.

My best guess is that ED is done with new jets. I'm thinking they have three options moving forward for aircraft modules, one of those three is almost a certainty: 1. They can continue developing WW2 aircraft. This is the one I think is a certainty. 2. They can focus on early jet aircraft. Though EA has said they have no interest in developing a century-series aircraft, I think they can go earlier and flesh out the Korean War theater. F9Fs, Thunderjets/Thunderstreaks, Skyraiders, (I'd personally prefer a Vietnam-era Skyraider, but Korean-era would do too), Shooting Stars etc. Not to mention all the Korean-era helos. 3. They can focus on helos. I would love a Chinook, Blackhawk, Cobra, Sea King, Sea Stallion, etc. Just my two cents.

So, setting displays to 256 didn't cause any change that I noticed. I did do a full flight, takeoff to landing at night in the PNVS, though. It wasn't the best flight, especially the landing, but I did it.
-
I've seen that before too. My option is and has always been set to 512, but I might try it at a lower value and see how that goes. Let me get back inside real quick and I'll fire up a quick hot start mission and try it out. I'll report back in a bit.

Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy day. No, I believe you're thinking of the TADS that traverses at 60 d/s. The PNVS traverses at about double that, 120 d/s or so. No, what I mean is, even with my head held straight forward, so the PNVS turret isn't traversing, everything in the PNVS is at a lower FPS. I'm just guessing off the top of my head, but I'd say in the PNVS is around 10-15 fps, while everything outside the PNVS is somewhere around 40 and smooth. It's really weird because it's not a global FPS issue. It's not even left eye vs right eye. It's basically that my entire left eye is, let's say, at 45 FPS. But in my right eye, in the PNVS symbology (everything that's in IR), it's about 15 FPS. But also in my right eye, outside the IR PNVS symbology, it's 45 FPS again. I don't have the expertise to figure it out, but I know from watching plenty of videos since the release that the PNVS should be alot smoother and have what is basically real-world frame rates, or as close as you can get to that given your hardware.
-
I can't fly it at night yet. I'm running in VR and when I pull up the PNVS, everything in the PNVS is at a much lower FPS than everything else. The whole sim doesn't drop frames, just the PNVS display. It's weird and I don't have the computer-savy brain to figure it out.
