Suncom SFS and Talon restoration and mods
debolestis replied to debolestis's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
New parts arrived. I've got this joystick for PS, it should be with hall sensors, I have no idea if it will work, I'll write about it when I test it. Only schematics I found is this: It seems to be that I have newer style. You can see it compared to Xbox thumb stick. I also found 5 of these switches on eBay. All used but were 5 euros each. Serial number is: A218-100646-0, manufacturer is Guardian electric, even china hat is made of aluminum. It has larger travel from what I am used to, and it thakes much more force to move it. I couldn't resist so I disassembled one. I wanted to know what the hell is inside that these things cost so much. It is so simple, it has metal case, lever, no spring but rubber ring for centering, lever extension, contact plate a little pcb and that is it. Now I need to figure out how to instal them into Talon stick. -

It would be great if you can sell me one. There are always talons and raptors on eBay but mostly in U.S. and shipping from there is expensive. Why don't you use Leo Bodnar's board or something similar? There are 8 axis on it. -

I was also looking to buy better switches, I don't like micro switches that are used in suncom. I found them all but prices are crazy. Something similar on eBay This one was even difficult to name, it is actually called a Trim 2-Way Push button. Found it on eBay but the price... This one is actually affordable, I don't know if it will fit. At the moment I am will probably use NKK switches for push buttons. For 4 way switches am still looking. Trim 2-Way Push button will be improvised. Toggle switches on throttle also feel like crap. I was thinking of using larger switches but I cannot find one with flat lever. I found this image, and on the right there is grey potentiometer knob, on SFS there is a switch. I'd like to put potentiometer inside, but what type is it? Multiturn or "regular"? Are there better photos of real throttle? -

I was working on suncom's grip, I wanted polished look. It is possible to polish this grip, but very difficult. I tried to use dremel for polishing, but even on low speeds it is melting plastic. Then I used this: I used table drill on very low RPM, and it worked but it takes a lot of time. Maybe there is a better solution, if you know how please post. Real thing: I am also looking to buy one suncom grip, if somebody wants to sell one please send me a message. -

It is actually a Raptor that I built for a friend. It was rusty and greasy, but when I washed it in a bucket with dish detergent and later with alcohol, it became "brand new". I used original pots that were in good condition, I just couldn't do a proper hall mod. What I tried to do, and I tested this and it works: It is called push-push configuration. As you can see it has linear response, perfect for joystick. Problem is that there is no space for magnets to travel inside. The other option was to make magnets stationary and hall sensor movable. But it is not stable, wires can fall off. Maybe you Sokol can try this mod. -

I also found THIS This is PS3 Dual Shock 3 analogue thumb stick. It seems that it is on hall sensors. But each axis has 4 pins? What is pinout? I am not happy with Target Designator / LOS Slew switch, as I understand it should be something like thumb stick with push button anyway. I'd like to use hall sensors if possible. I don't play games on PS, is Dual Shock 3 a good controller? -

I worked a litlle on Raptor. It had broken triger, I glued it with epoxy, it seems OK now. I also worked on switches in a base, I wired it basically as 8 switches, toggle switch is switching between two rows. There is place for 3 connectors on, one for base switches, one for grip switches and on for Leo Bodnar's board. -

Please post a few photos of your TDC switch, I don't know how your FUSBa controller works, but I'll try to help but you have to find a multimeter. You can buy multimeter for 10$. Please buy one. -

Is there any way to connect switches form F22 or Cougar to Leo Bodnar's board? From multiplexer chips to matrix? Is that possible? -

Switches' contacts are on PCB. To replace them you have to remove plastic by force. -

I am not sure, i didn't do it but it looked like plastic is glued to pcb. You'll probably have to apply some force. I don't recomend it before you test switches with multimeter. -

You absolutely must get multimeter, even the cheapest will do, it is essential tool in thing like this and all electronics. Set multimeter to measuring resistance, then touch these two terminals, and if you measure around zero ohms than switch is OK. It is same thing on opposite side. -

Check switches with multimeter, it could be a switch but in my case it was the wires, they were very thin and few were actually broken, if that is the case you'll probably have to disassemble the throttle, because there is no other way to replace them. -

Try first without wiring, maybe there is mechanical problem so you have to adjust hats. It was very thin wire, do you have old PC fans, or usb cables, there could be something similar. -

When you unscrew all of screws, remove both hats, to remove them use screwdriver as lever. Then you'll probably be able to remove PCB. -

Don't use too much force, they were not glued in my sfs. I used small screwdriver as lever. It was not difficult.
