Feedback Thread - F-14 Tomcat patch Jan 27th 2022
captain_dalan replied to IronMike's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Short summary, only take mk60's in battle for the time being? ADDENDUM: how does one disable loft to perform test shots? -

My pleasure, i literally just sent them to you. -

No need to credit me for anything, it' the least i can do for you guys I only changed the missile engagement options and the skins. But i still used skins that cam with the latest patch, so these should be no issue. -

Thanks mate! Will do. I think i set them to half between max range and NEZ on most. I Didn't experiment with random between max and NEZ. I'll drop the missions in a PM. -
Best plane to 'train' for the Phantom?
captain_dalan replied to The_Chugster's topic in DCS: F-4E Phantom
The F-14 is really a terrible substitute for anything F-4 related except RIO-WSO interaction and possibly pulse radar. My opinion, the cockpit is nothing like the F-4. In the F-4 you essentially down in a bathtub, poor side visibility and non existent rear visibility. Best plane in DCS to simulate this claustrophobic experience is the A-4. However, the A-4 flies nothing like an F-4. The F-5 has a similar "HUD" and somewhat similar dashboard. But is again too nimble for an F-4. I haven't tried flying the F-14 with the wings manually set to say 60 degrees and see what that does to the low speed handling characteristics. But even if pitch does become similar, the engines will be all wrong. Both in raw performance and throttle response. So, tough luck i guess. But nothing in DCS really emulates a Phantom of any kind right now. Performance wise, maybe a MiG-21 is the closest, but i don't own the one in DCS and i don't know which variant it is, nor how close that variant should be to the F-4E -
The Phabulous Heatblur Elves have been hard at work.

Ah if needs 4000ft of runway, i'll give it a pass. -
PSA: F-14 Performance/FM Development Status + Guided Discussion

Hello there! Great news with the latest update! The AI launched AIM-54's now loft. And the AI will launch them at more useful ranges IF set so in the AI options menu. Now i have edited all the instant actions to add this option to all my wingmen, but as soon as the DCS updates next, all my changes will be gone. So, @IronMike? Is it possible to expect for you guys to edit the instant actions and the missions AI wingmen to have these options enabled? Either to halfway between max and NEZ or to between random and NEZ? I know it's not a priority, but these edits can get tedious if done with every subsequent patch. Cheers and thanks for the updates!

1. The last time i looked, DCS doesn't simulate cumulative aircraft fatigue and flight hours. 2. What makes you think the simulated jets are 20 years old? 3. How many people have you personally seen and what percentage of the DCS flying population do you think is capable of max-performing the jet? -
already reported Ship wake still broken.

Fully agreed! -
Yep, me too I almost always forget to turn it off. Haven't even mapped a key-binding to it until a week or so.
-
Maybe it has something to do with the way i fly (generally unloading before rolling), but i've never noticed anything detrimental by having it on during ACM Never done deliberate intensive testing though!
-
Statistical sample of ONE by now, but it appears this has been the case. During a recent engagement i have left the TCS on, and punched PAL. The radar did attach itself to something, and in the short sub-second time interval before the lock broke, the TCS showed nothing but clear sky
-
Yep, Jester will call parachuting pilots as bandits. Can be a bit confusing at times, especially during multi-bandit engagements.

If the chaff disappear in under a second then it might as well be chaff. PAL locking on to CM is something that is new and welcome news to me, it's good to have that in mind while engaging it. Will chaff also break an already established lock? And here is a track, SP normally (for all the good it is), against a MiG-29. Not an ideal one, as i didn't have enough time to experiment more then a dozen of times. The MiG is high above both the nose and the horizon when the PAL locks and loses the lock in the same second. The 2nd lock is successful this time though. braking a P-STT in PAL.trk

I actually agree with you, despite disagreeing on the topic of changing it. Simulating haptic feedback is a highly subjective topic, and largely falls into what can be called artistic license. Like sound of engines inside cockpit, over wing airflow sound inside cockpit, button clicks, throttle changes... You'd barely hear (if at all) most of those inside the cockpit with your helmet on, yet, their presence or absence in the sim, make a huge difference. I understand the home-cockpit builders and the civies that want none of that in DCS, but these planes are hardly flyable with them and i'd argue, flying them by instrument and muscle memory only is even less "realistic" (what ever that means) then flying them on "feel".

[DCS ISSUE] AIM-54 TWS launch make AI to chaff instantly
captain_dalan replied to diditopgun's topic in Bugs and Problems
Agreed, i'm all for chaff when pinged (if preemptive chaffing) or bug out. -
No maneuvering involved here mate. After losing the lock, i point the nose to where the bandit is in the sky, 45-50 degrees high, i kick PAL, after 2 sweeps the PAL picks him up, and immediately loses the lock. With the nose in place i kick PAL a second time, PAL locks him on the first pass, the lock is immediately lost again. Something's fuzzy there. I'll try and save a track the next time i run DCS, but it's a very specific edge-case scenario and with none of my MP mates around, getting the AI to comply won't be easy.

At gamma setting of 2.1-2.2, VR is a bit dim and flat screen is a bit.....muddled? Hazy? I'm not sure i can find the exact words to describe it. It's not washed out like it used to be, but it's almost as if the atmospheric haze that should be there at say 10-15 nautical miles is completely uniform even at point blank range. Almost like you are flying through a very polluted air or water mixed with milk...

PSA: F-14 Performance/FM Development Status + Guided Discussion

NO plane should have its flight model developed based on OTHER plane's performance, don't let some of the overzealous and overcompetitive people tell you. Besides, the FM purists here (yours truly here included, guilty as charged) wouldn't shut up about it, so you will find out if it happens one way or the other -
Hey i'm 6' tall and can swim a mile in just about half an hour! But then again.......i do find pilot bodies in cockpits to be incredibly obscuring so, i don't really want one in DCS....
-
You know, these are some good points you raise there. Just last night, after the usual MP shenanigans, i went for some SP FOX-1 training, and on a couple occasions (literally 2), after losing the PD-STT lock inside 15 miles with the bandit high, i went PAL and nose up, because i had a general idea, where the bandit was supposed to be. I immediately locked him up, and then the lock was instantaneously dropped, like inside 1 second of it being established. This isn't the first time this happened, but it is an edge-case, as i usually am amble to perform anti-notching maneuvers, or lose the lock much closer do to large lateral displacement. Not in these two cases though. So, what gives? The bandit is high, inside 15 miles and PAL should be P-STT. So the lock should unbreakable, notching or not. But it does break and it breaks similarly to how it breaks when auto-switch to P-STT is on. So what if Jester is switching between P and PD despite PAL being on? Had i read this post i might have saved the tracks! Anyways, this may be worth investigating. @IronMike?
