I just watched the videos in my car (which has a fairly nice OEM stereo) and the afterburner sounds seriously badass! That's a promising sign. :) -Nick

Bunyap Test Flight - Shows Maverick Deployment.
BlackLion213 replied to Morgue's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Thank you for sharing, that is an excellent into video and first look. The Viggen is looking gorgeous in that footage! I really love Bunyap's videos and have been following his Spitfire diaries as well. For those who like WWII and haven't checked it out, it's definitely worth a look and is full of interesting stories. -Nick -
Awesome footage and a great find! It's great to see that new footage like this is finding it's way "out of the shoe box" and onto youtube. -Nick PS - great VF-213/VF-114 footage in there as well. :D

** DCS: AJS-37 WIP Pre-Release Manual Released! **
BlackLion213 replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Two possible formatting issues on page 240: Should it read(?): 4. If needed, ignite afterburner. Check: a. Zone indicator = desired a erburner zone. b. Exhaust nozzle indicator = desired zone achieved. c. Pressure ratio d. Zone 2 < +15°C > 1.9 > +15°C > 1.8 e. Zone 3 = Maximum power Should it read(?): 6. Rotate with the ight path vector when the time line reaches the markers. a. Set flight path vector to: The horizon line when not using the a er burner To about the height of the outer pillars (about 3° above the horizon) when using the afterburner. -Nick -

I think they may have wondered why the HUD has so many numbers, but so few pilot aids. ;) Just with my early dive into the manual, the degree of automation / systems integration and information packed into the existing HUD is quite fascinating. It looks different than most modern HUDs, but it seems like a very useful tool that delivers a variety of information in a glance. It will take those of us unfamiliar time to properly learn it, but so far it has been fun reading. :) -Nick -

Excellent, thanks! She looks impressively complex and the engine modeling sounds quite interesting. -Nick -
I won't speak to the subjective preference (I prefer Final Countdown the movie, but prefer Top Gun footage). :) However, Top Gun had a lot more footage with a lot more variety (namely multiple vantage points from the aircraft itself) along with footage obtained in the air and from the ground. Final Countdown was a fun movie as well and I enjoy that footage a lot, but it didn't use the variety of techniques. That part was unprecedented. -Nick

That sounds perfect! -Nick

I understand...as a movie to watch I actually prefer Hot Shots (and part deux). However, the aerial footage from Top Gun is pretty unprecedented - especially from the 1980s. Also, despite how things may seem, Top Gun is also a silly movie like Hot Shots, its just less obvious in that regard. I actually prefer "The Making of Top Gun" to the movie itself. The clips below contain the majority of the interesting flying scenes and probably offers 70% of the experience of watching the movie. The "making of" is pretty good too and I generally prefer watching it to the movie. Here is a short clip: https://youtu.be/kf_bCOoXK24 -Nick

Viggen in Depth - 02 - ARAK Pop-Up Attack
BlackLion213 replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Awesome! Thank you for the New Years treat! :D -Nick -
2012...? It has been a long road. Did you start working on the Viggen around the same time that you started with the MiG-21? No doubt a big sense of accomplishment with that complicated beast. Care to tell us more...? ;) -Nick

That's a great video - VF-2 just after transitioning to the F-14D.... Unfortunately, that video shows the F-14D HUD and cockpit, which is different than those in the Leatherneck F-14 (F-14A/A+/B). Here are a few videos of the F-14A cockpit with a brief glimpse at the HUD, VDI, and HSI. and BKR! :D -Nick

Thank you Darkbrotherhood. I'll admit that I ended up down the rabbit hole on this one...but I kept finding things that I liked and figured others might be interested too. :) Best, Nick

Hello, Found a new video from USS Enterprise during her 1986 cruise. I've never seen it before so I figured it should be posted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xFpHCL2Ep4 VF-114 in 1984....near Oman. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huMgcm4HcJk VF-74 in 1992 (while deployed from Super-Sara CV-60) Also, here are a few videos from USS Independence circa 1996 (last of the Forrestal class to retire): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFswpMEgapA Independence in the earlier 90s: USS Ranger in 1989 :) USS Saratoga in 1985 USS Forrestal in 1989 Have a good night. :) -Nick

***DCS: AJS37 Viggen Now Available for Pre-Order!!***
BlackLion213 replied to swither's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Thank you for the very prompt answer. :) That sounds promising. The MiG runs well enough that I still fly it everyday, but I have more stutters and noticeable ASW activity. I tend to keep my flights simple as a result. If the Viggen is better (even a little bit), it will likely work well for me. What I really need is a GTX1080 - but it also means upgrading a bunch of other things so I need some time to sell my wife on that. :) I currently have a GTX970. Enjoy your new Rift! I just got mine a few days ago as well. It's a huge upgrade in experience! Particularly for things like carrier ops or refueling. :D -Nick -

BlackLion213 replied to swither's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Quick question on computer performance - how is the Viggen performing in VR? The MiG-21 cockpit is gorgeous in VR and arguably the most 3D looking (IMHO), but framerates and general performance are not as good in the MiG compared to the A-10C. You mentioned in the AMA that the Viggen runs similarly framerate-wise to the A-10C. Is this also true in VR? -Nick -
Same to you. :) -Nick

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/simulation So what is DCS for in your case? I'm pretty sure you are like the rest of us - someone who takes an interest in flying? Well, you didn't offer a real opinion - just an indiscriminate insult. What is the purpose of that? It's perfectly fair to say you don't like VR or it doesn't offer what you need. That makes perfect sense to me and people tend to like different things. I also don't believe that I am flying in VR, but I find it more fun than a monitor. However, statements like yours add nothing to the argument and are seemingly intended to stir up people's emotions. Hence....it certainly looks like trolling. We can at least agree that statements like these serve no purpose in polite conversation...right? -Nick

So why are you sitting in front of a screen and pretending to be in a plane? -Nick

BlackLion213 replied to swither's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
I too was a touch trigger happy and pre-ordered through ED's site. I corrected my error by ordering a Viggen T-shirt.:D I really like the LNS Viggen emblem and appreciate the opportunity to grab some extra stuff like T-shirts.:) Congrats to Leatherneck for their new products and pre-order status! Ahh...Mr Plow, perhaps my favorite Simpson episode. "Well, at least I got him as good as he got me....DOH!!". :D -Nick -

DCS VR... Is it worth it?
