DCS *in pancake mode* prefers DDR3
TAW_Impalor replied to TAW_Impalor's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Updated my analysis to include 2.7.8 vs 2.7.6 on DDR4-3466 vs 1066. The results are shocking: My conclusions: 1. Pancake guys with good CPU/GPU should stay on DDR3 or downclock DDR4. 2. OB 2.7.8 benefits from downclocking more than 2.7.6, but they both do. 3. VR guys benefit from DDR4, but buying ultra fast kits does not matter. 4. The better the rig the higher was the FPS loss going from 2.7.6 to 2.7.8. -
DCS *in pancake mode* prefers DDR3

This? I did not reinstall Windows, all settings remained the same from 4670k build. Just flew VR on GS server, FPS was no higher than before (40-45), but experience is smoother, no stutters when I am low and turn my head to check 6. I saw 22/32 Gb RAM used, 10.5/11 VRAM, GPU utilization 100%, CPU 40% (8 P-cores). Some say my settings are "Minecraft", but for PvP that's ok. -
Hello. As some of you may know, I have run a few tests to see performance difference between 2.7.6 vs 2.7.7 in this thread. My loss was somewhat smaller than what many others observed. I think I finally know why! Today I ran the same tests to compare performance of my new 12th gen rig vs old 4th gen, using the latest OB 2.7.8. I went crazy and bought an expensive kit of some of the fastest DDR4 for the build: 4000cl14. Unfortunately, Aorus Elite only allowed me to run it at 3466cl14 due to BIOS bugs. I kept 1080ti until I can buy the 4090. My old PC was running close to 100% CPU, GPU, RAM (16Gb) and VRAM (11Gb) utilization in multiplayer while in VR, and gave me about 45 FPS, but there was not enough CPU cycles left for motion smoothing. Head tracking was also jittery, so I decided it's time to upgrade. Anyway, I started with 1080p mode, and to my surprise and disgust the new rig performed MUCH WORSE than the old (-58% difference)! I noticed that it utilized little CPU and GPU. Everything was optimized, except CPU overclock, as benchmarks showed. No HT, no E-cores. On a hunch I assumed the memory was too fast (haha) and tried decreasing the clock. Guess what? CPU and GPU utilization, and FPS, increased! I went all the way down to 1066 (equivalent to my old DDR3-2133), to get the best results. But they were still short of my old rig!!! Below 1066 clock the new mobo did not boot (why??). cl14 timings were also the best it could post. Next, I tested in VR, and the relationship was the opposite - faster RAM gave better results, but overall gain over the old rig did not exceed 6.9%. I understand and accept this, because GPU is still a bottleneck for now (and my DCS was optimized to run it at full capacity before), however it made almost no difference between 3466 and 2133 RAM clock. The test track involves descending through overcast (8v8 F18 mission), so I think it is the clouds making gen 4 rigs perform better or similar to gen 12. Of course, I used very low settings that let me play in VR (no shadows, no AA, low preload radius). The detailed test results and settings are here, with the summary below (I ran each test twice for accuracy): Hopefully, this can help the devs in their analysis why DCS performance is so poor. As always, YMMV.

Hi, what did you use to plot these charts?

Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7
TAW_Impalor replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
One more thing that differs from PC to PC is RAM speed and latency. My earlier tests showed that DCS is very sensitive to it, and maybe even more now (2.7.8) than before (2.7.6). -
Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7
TAW_Impalor replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
I think the reason is that my settings were found by trial and error to push my PC for maximum utilization of both its CPU and GPU, given RAM and VRAM that I have, in scenarios where I fly most. Applying these settings to beefier PCs or ones with different CPU/GPU balance gives different results. But we all see that higher versions demand higher hardware utilization, and depending on where bottlecks are, can punish FPS more or less. -
Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7
TAW_Impalor replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
My terrain preload radius is pretty low, because I have only 16gb of RAM for VR in MP. DCS keeps loading terrain inflight resulting in stutters (0 FPS moments) when on HDD. On SSD also. Only NVMe does it quickly enough. My pagefile is also there. I modified my BIOS to enable it for 4670k, but not as a system drive. I included my settings as Preset 1. Replace your Custom1.lua in Saved Games with mine, then load in DCS. Edit. Sorry! Just updated the preset, because it was originally for VR and not with 1080 resolution! -
Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7
TAW_Impalor replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
@BoosterdogThe tests are accurate to the best of my ability. All ran exactly 60 seconds as the Pause button was used to start FRAPS. Then FRAPS stopped automatically in 60 seconds. I ran additional tests when the first two results were noisy, i.e. much different. I compared averages with averages in the end. Only Release/HDD 2.7.6 vs 2.7.7 makes sense to compare, as OB 2.7.8 runs from NVMe on my PC. Now I have added more results for 1080p (same link), and between 2.7.6 and 2.7.7 I see a similar %difference as for VR. The 2.7.7 run does show substantially more CPU utilization, and uses somewhat more RAM and GPU. Also, when launching DCS from HDD (Disk 1 or S on my screenshots), it mattered WHEN I pressed the Pause key to start the test. The longer I waited, the smoother was the run (no stutters) as DCS could preload more data upfront, resulting in higher average FPS. @BIGNEWY Maybe these benchmarks can help your devs to explain us the 2.7.6 vs 2.7.7 performance? It seems the textures are heavier or something like that? -

If you scroll down on the Config page you will see that I fly with no reprojection and at 90. My max FPS in these benches was higher than 45, and on lighter missions it goes to 60 or so, so there is no capping at 45. But I cannot know for sure. Maybe SVR or WMR indeed make 45 a 'sticky' point even with reprojection turned off, to make my experience smoother. I can run again on flat screen 1080p and with no FPS cap to make you happy! -

HP Reverb G2, as in the signature -
Sorry, I can't find where to post bugs about this forum itself. I remember there was a thread after we switched to new design. Anyway, I struggle to read it on my Android/Opera because some posts show with tiny font (smaller than the signature that follows). I believe this happens when someone replies from mobile. Screens attached.

DCS fps decrease significantly when open streaming software
TAW_Impalor replied to Omega38K's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Never stream, but it makes sense. You are CPU limited. HDD or SSD? Professional streamers use hardware devices that sit between PC and monitor, thus not eating performance. -
Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7
TAW_Impalor replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Repairing OB back to the latest restored my modules. I have no space on NVMe for both, and installing them to HDD is just too much pain. For benchmarking I use F18 8v8 mission because it is the closest to what I normally fly. Nevertheless, I installed Release version to HDD (took 3 hours!) and benchmarked 2.7.7 vs 2.7.6 build. Result: I saw a drop of about 1 FPS out of 45. The latest OB on my NVMe drive runs faster, but that is not apples-to-apples. On NVMe my FPS never drops to 0, unlike on HDD. See this link for detailed results and my configs/optimisations/useful scripts. Nota bene: I will hopefully upgrade to Alder Lake next week and my signature will change. So I included my 'old' PC details too. -
Hello @lefuneste01Thanks for updating the mod for the OB! I have a minor problem when uninstalling it now with OvGME: ERROR: GME_DirRemove:: RemoveDirectoryW error The directory is not empty. : D:\Games\DCS World OpenBeta\bin\ShaderFixes There are three files left in the folder like '7c31580e44344f82-ps_replace.bin', do they affect DCS in any way? I need a clean OB for benchmarking. The mod was installed earlier today to a clean beta repaired with 'Search for extra files' option. Such option deleted my settings for your mod, so I don't want to employ it again. I only use your mod for shaders and did not see such errors before. Related question: how do I backup my settings to keep them between uninstalls/version changes?

No space on NVMe. Installing on HDD may not be apples to apples, but I'll try. -
Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7

@Limarohmm. Downgrading to 2.7.6 disabled all my modules! Repairing and renaming saved games did not help. At first also lost main menu screen, but repairing fixed that. Used Skatezilla's UI. Any ideas? ) -
Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7

Will try, curious myself -
After the last update, when I move my head left-right or up-down part of the information on the screen disappears. More in one eye than the other (when move left or right), creating weird feeling.

I did not install my new 12900K yet, but from what I read the 'K' in the name is a joke this time around. I've been pushing my 4670K 20% higher for 7 years. The new generation is already too pushed and too binned to expect much overclock out of them. I went all-in with 12900K because of that, although I plan to only use P-cores as single thread. And for RAM I also gambled to order DDR4 4000cl14 hoping to run it in Gear 1. Next week will know if it worked.

Big FPS drop in VR / multiplayer / passing other players

Performance (FPS) loss from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7
TAW_Impalor replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
I am with all of you and I'm not defending the devs. It's just I did a lot of programming myself and understand the situation from their point of view. I hope they are indeed working on the new core and to assure compatibility with all the modules, which keep evolving, is a daunting project. They just don't have resources to debug what more or less works. Debugging takes 10 times more effort vs coding. From my side, I did not notice any huge FPS drop from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7, but my setup is heavily optimized to squeeze every last bit of performance. My CPU, GPU, RAM and VRAM all run at 100% capacity on GS. The only problem I have is G2 not getting enough CPU cycles for smooth head tracking, so I have finally decided to upgrade. Good tips on how to save VRAM and RAM I found in this thread: So yes, this "game" is not plug-and-play. One must be VERY tech savvy to stay on top of it.
