Battle of Yocca Forest (UH-1H Campaign)
rge75 replied to DarkCrow's topic in User Created Missions General
Looks promising and interesting, but I didn't get one thing. Where to meet up with the CH-47? I ended up flying alone to FC003. It anyway triggered the events and it was possible to continue the mission. While reading through the pdf once again, I suppose I just found out the mistake. I didn't face West at the rendevouz point. I started and flew to the West. Must have been a language/understanding problem from my side... - I'll give it a try later ;-) Edit: Works like a charm now ;-) BTW, landing at FC001 is quite challenging. I managed to avoid the trees, but the chopper got declination when touched the ground too fast. The idea with the pdf briefing is interesting and nice. Also the kmz file. However, it anyway would be nice to have the waypoints on the kneeboard as well IMO. -
Just finished the mission :-) I'd say it took me probably 15 tries and 8 days, but with the last 3 attempts, I always got the 2 first tank immediately. The 3rd tank almost seemed invulnerable though and I had to return to base twice. Anyway, this is no issue since the base is that close. Conclussion as mentioned before: Challenging but fun. Keep on going.

The sight isn't any better with the jungle trees IMO, but it at least feels more like the nam with those ;-) Can't help you about the other problem (runs without problems on my system). Good luck ;-)

Just did another attempt today. I changed my strategy and set the rockets to 6x. Arrived from the east as usual, sent two salvo and the first tank was gone. Same with the 2nd one. Then set the mark and returned to base for repairing (and re-ammo). Back to the battlefield, I thought I'll set the rockets to 4x to give me more attempts of getting the 3rd one. Shouldn't be that hard because you easily find it due to the smoke. However, the smoke makes it harder to see the tank itself. Long story short - I spent all my 36 rockets and the tank was still alive. Back to base, repeating the whole procedure. I was slightly surprised that the smoke now was blue, but it looks like you mark the tank again when leaving and arriving again. But it doesn't matter - I set the rockets back to 6x and giving two salvo...no hit, sharp turn, another 12 rockets and so on.. well, you can imagine - I didn't hit the thing and ran out of ammo yet again. I told myself to not get into a hurry, to stay calm. Patience is the key (except for the first two tanks *g*). However, when flying back to base, the Huey suddenly denied it's service - looks like it was hit too heavy with the 3rd rush (I may also have touched the bottom while going into a hard dive and going close for the tank - sort of a desperate deed). Anyway, it could be done as long as you destroy the two tanks fast enough. I won't give up ;-) However, don't make all missions that difficult *g* (but you already confirmed that there will also be easier ones). Overall, I look at it as a good challenge.

Maybe it would help to have it close to the clearing, almost at the edge of the forest border. This way, the APC would be covered, but you could more easy find it even if it doesn't shot anymore - simply because you could remember the location. Personally I also wouldn't like to see it completely in the clearing. If so, you could rather reduce the amount of APC from 2 to 1. But then again, some other people may find it too easy. You'll never manage to make it right for everybody due to the different skills.

It's always a question of the balance between realism and gameplay. Did you ever try to zoom in the view once you spotted the trails? This helps IMO to aim better. I fire pretty late and don't fire before I see them. As mentioned above, I set the rockets to 3x (but I'm not yet sure if this is the "best" ratio). It also seems best to attack from the east IMO, but it's just my personal feeling. Anyway, I also didn't manage to completely finish the mission (and today, I felt like I should continue the Bay of Hogs campaign *g*)
-
Yes, that's exactly the situation. In theory, you would think this is great because he can't fire at you anymore. But this also makes it almost impossible to find it in the jungle. Sometimes I manage to take out both and the 3rd one to mark appears. Then, I need to fly back to the base to get some ammo again and when flying back...shot down (but that was before I knew about repairing). Anyway, long story short - if you don't take out both tanks quick enough, then it becomes very, very difficult to find 'em. BTW, just wondering how you guys attack the tanks (how many rockets at once). I'm using the 3x setting but I often shoot two or even 3 salvos when I notice that I didn't hit the Thing.
-
Repairing now works ;-) However, my main problem still isn't that I can't hit the target but that I can't find it anymore once the tank doesn't shoot at me anymore. I don't know how to overcome this problem (maybe buying a bigger screen and running the sim in a higher res, haha. I'm playing at 1680x1050 only). Taking out the first tank most of the time isn't a problem. But if the mission really tought me something so far, then it's landing w/o any instruments *g* They always fail when being hit.
-
Thanks for the info. I thought, if they can re-ammo it while running, then they can also repair it while running. I'll shut it down next time in that case. Well, give me some more weeks to find out if it's impossile for me or not ;-) I still think it's doable, especially if repairing will work. Sure, it might be boring to fly back too often, but it's the nam, man.

I still can't do the vote because I did't manage to finish it yet. IMO it's hard but not unfair which means I keep trying. So far, I managed to take out the two tanks and to mark the 3rd one. But then, I always had to went back to the base for re-ammo. And when I went back to the hot spot, I was shot down ;-) The really bad thing is when you fly around that long that the tanks run out of ammo and doesn't fire on you anymore. This makes it almost impossible to find it anymore. BTW, doesn't repairing work, is it disabled, did I miss someting or am I not patient enough? Re-ammo works fine, but when I tell the ground crew to repair the chopper, nothing seems to happen. Anyway, to come back to the topic, I'd say the difficulty is good/challenging, BUT I wouldn't mind if the campaign would also have some easier missions between the hard ones. Actually I'd vote for "It's messy but I DID finish it after a few tries. It was fun!" but I didn't finish it yet. Edit: Just another question...will the side gunners ever hit something (I set them either on free fire or returing fire on short distacne)? You can be sure they run out of ammo but all enemy soldiers are still alive. Obviously I'm doing something wrong?

You're the man  Looking forward for the whole campaign. You're testing video already looks like a challenge.

The thing that confused me was that there was no feedback when I found the ruin, so I was not sure if it really was the ruin or not. However, I went down and the insertion worked ;-) I'm not sure if I did it the right way, but the event got triggered. It took me slightly longer on the 2nd insertion point. It was more hovering than anything else but when I pulled back the stick a bit to get slower, the event was triggered again. I'd say it wouldn't have looked good in a replay, but I was able to finish it at the 2nd attempt (in the 1st one, I crashed into the ruin because I wasn't 100% sure what to do *g*). My opinion about the mission. It's a good difficulty for the 1st mission of the campaign. IMO it could be slightly more difficult if there aren't a lot more tasks to do. So either short and semi-difficult or long and not too hard ;-) What I dislike is a very long mission with a very hard task in the end. This can be frustrating for less skilled pilots. Overall it was pretty cool to once have a shorter mission. It was just the right thing after a long day at work. edit: The thing I'm still not able to do is a sling load, so hopefully there won't be any in the campaign ;-)
-
I'm also struggling finding the ruins. They should be somewhere between waypoint 1 and 2? I went North-East when the radio told me to do so and flew around quite a bit. Maybe it could help if people would know how the ruins look like (Picture in the briefing?). This way people know what to look for. And does altitude and speed matter to trigger it? I'll give another try later on ;-)
-
Reality also has more different landmarks ;-) However, nice story. BTW, I just saw your new mission/thread - I'll give it a try next week, so you'll have the opinion of a casual gamer as well.
-
Ok, good to know it's not just me using ctrl-k. I only thought because you can't press ctrl-k in a real Huey ;-) I suppose it would be easier with the Nevada map because it has more unique locations. But with Kaukasus, everything looks similiar.
-
BTW, how do you properly navigate with the map? I think it's hard to navigate on sight only because many roads and maps are not on the map. IMO the map is not detailed enough and I often need to "cheat" by pressing ctrl-k to get my current position. It's even worse with mission 3 at night ;-) I'd be lost without ctrl-k or without F10... but as I mentioned, it feels like cheating.

Your video helped a lot. I finally managed the 2nd mission and I think it really improved my landing abilities. I adjusted the time of the 2nd AAA though as proposed. In some attempts, I maybe even was within the limit, but not with my last, successful attempt. I even missed one of the 4 migs but luckily it looks like it didn't have an affect to the success of the mission :) Anyway, once again thanks for this really cool mission

Well, I bought the module yesterday but I'll first have to learn the basics offline ;-) However, I wasn't patient enough today and I ended up in the Huey again *g* I might consider the online part once, because the backseat instruction might really be interesting. I suppose I'll need to get a headset first though?

Thank you for your replies. The number of single player missions and campaigns for the L-39 is pretty small (there's a campaign which sais hardcore difficulty). The reason why I'm not into multiplayer simply is because I don't think I'm a very good pilote. And with all those experienced people here, a "casual gamer" like me feels pretty lost. My last fighter "sim" was USNF and ATF which is no comparison to DCS.... And yes, it is on sale (50%). That's why it became a pretty interesting deal to me.
-
Hello, I'm considering buying the L-39 during the summer sale. Actually, I'm not very used to modern jets (playing and loving the DCS Huey). E.g. landing the F-15 is still a Problem to me. However, I read that the L-39 includes interactive training missions but I wasn't able to find any video or other useful information about it. Searching the forum even said, that the missions disappeared after an update (but the post is from 2015)? So my question is, if these training mission still exist (also for Nevada?) and if so, are they're worth anything? How many missions are included? I'm not playing online which means I prefer modules with missions and/or campaigns.

GreenWar - UH-1H mini-campaign on the NTTR
rge75 replied to Eight Ball's topic in User Created Missions General
Just curious (in case I'll also once try to create a mission). What software do you use for text-to-speech? Is it something open source or not? Edit: Just noticed that there are some free online services with more or less good results ;-) -
You can't make it right for everybody ;-) I'm sure the skils vary simply too much. But it's great that some people are creating campaigns because this is simply what I'm missing with the DCS modules. At least Nevada is a nice playground to practice landing on different spots with the Huey for a non pro like me. I read that the Gazelle is even more difficult to fly which means I'll stay with the Huey for a while. Glad to read about a new campaign coming soon :-)
-
Thank you very much for having a look into it and for the explanations. Your good news is fine to me :-) The screenshot helps a lot. I'm sure there are many skilled pilots here who can finish it as it is and therefore it's for sure good to leave it the way it is for all the other people. And once again a big thank you for creating the whole campaign.
-
Thanks for your reply. Looks like I have 4 options in that case ;-) - Waiting for an update - Skipping mission 2 and continuing to mission 3 by doing some edit job - Edit mission 2 (I only had a short look into it but it seems quite complicated) - becoming a better pilot However, I still don't quite understand what I exactly would have to complete the airfield part in mission 2? By looking at the mission editor, it seems like I have to land in the middle of the airfield?

Thanks again. I'll have to do quite some practice in that case ;-)
