Scratch that! Still getting stutters every so often.
-
Hello guys! The reinstall didn't work. I tried MSFS and had the same problem then started looking for other causes rather than DCS. Turns out it was my new expensive gaming keyboard with all the LED's. I've disabled it for now and am typing this on a vastly inferior dell keyboard (you do notice the difference after using a better one). So that was it. Performance looks smooth and the game itself looks greately improved with many small details (air raid sirens, subtle spotting aids, etc) added so can't wait to give it a proper try when I get time. Be wary of fancy keyboards with VR if you have any problems! Shame about the keyboard though.

I'm doing a full reinstall. I'll let you guys know when its done, and if not will look into the windows update loop thing. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I don't think its a VR problem as I can see the stutters occuring in 2d mode as well and haven't really changed any settings from what I used to use. Not sure if it was a long repair but I used the update tool and did a repair with no positive gains. Might have to bite the bullet and reinstall!

Benchmark came back clean with nothing out of the ordinary. It may be that DCS needs to be reinstalled after such a big update but I'd really rather not if I can help it as its such a slow process that may well do nothing....
-
Yes deleted all that stuff and clouds on low. Wondering if it may be my system as I seem to rememeber the game Rage lagging when it never had before though it was in 4K so was hard to determine if it was a problem or just an especially taxing part of the game. Running a benchmark now to see if things are working okay. It is the game itself (DCS) that is lagging I can see it both in VR and 2D so.. Didn't try that (airfield strike) particular mission before the update but others seem to be doing poorly too.
-
No I'm on the index so none of that applies to me unfortunately.

Hey never used to have this problem since the recent update (tried stable and am now on beta). I loaded up the instant action spitfire mission and its lagging something terrible with fairly moderate settings. Just wondering if this is common on a system like mine. I'm thinking its maybe too much flak or something else? Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz, 3696 Mhz, 1080Ti, 32 GB RAM, Win 10

Someone Please Invent a BETTER Headtracker
Wolf8312 replied to Cpt Cuckoo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I hate track IR as well. Might consider trying 2D again if there was a better solution. I never even liked it much before VR it was just better than not having it. With the Vive tracking system though would it not be a simple matter to construct some sort of alternative (using a baseball cap maybe) tracking device using the VIVE's basestations? -
DCS has never run better than it does for me right now on the index. I was flying over Vegas yesterday and just marveling at how much the performance has improved since I started on VR about 4 years ago. MSFS is working great too now, but VR really does require a lot of tweaking. MSFS was an abomination when I first loaded it up! I kinda get the feeling as well that the people who have performance issues with DCS tend to be those who are watching their fps counters all the time and comparing these numbers to other games.

I have 11. Last time I checked it was pretty grim!

To be fair, while not perfect, combined with innovations on the steam VR side of things, I think DCS has come on massively since I started with VR about 4 years ago. For me now I have a relatively smooth experience, even in WW2 campaign missions, with none of the horrible frame drops which would send me to VR loading screens or horizon-al (new word!) stutters whenever I rolled/looped. It just feels smooth now. The new damage model is also incredible in VR. I mean I'm no expert on these things but are you sure, other than a major overhaul (Vulkan etc) of the engine itself, there is even much headroom for further optimization's? I never know when people call for these optimization's, if it is because they know optimization's are actually possible or if it's just a mixture of frustration and wishful thinking on their part, without their having any real knowledge or understanding of the practicalities involved? Not that I know either way myself, but I'd be interested to know what form these optimization's would take if they are indeed possible. Normandy for example is fantastic (channel defo needs work) now performance wise as it lacks speed trees etc., (I think?) but I'm not sure about the other maps! Normandy might even be one of the best maps in terms of performance which is ironic for anyone who's been flying on it for as long as I have!

I only play in SP and I know that AI is being improved but the A8 is a death trap no matter which allied planes I try to take on. I could drop down from out of space (at least the last time I checked, maybe it's been improved now?) and attempt a boom and zoom on an I-16 and they would still catch me. I know AI is a complicated thing but surely this can be altered somehow as there is just no way those planes should be catching something with about 10 times their energy! It effectively makes flying the Anton SP not an option for me because unless I get them on my first run I'm toast. The 109 however works okay for boom and zoom in SP but the 2 FW's...

Depends. Most of the time if I love a module (spit, Gazelle etc)I like to know that I [i]can[/i] start the AC cold if I so wish. I like to have that power and especially when I was new to DCS it seemed like an essential part of the whole experience. But... I tend to forget the procedures if I don't play a particular module for a while or so, and after a while began to realize that I wasn't learning much. The thing is, if one is simply remembering a series of buttons to press, rather than actually learning and truly understanding what all the systems do, then I don't think you are really learning anything, though one might be able to kid himself into believing he is a real pilot! Truth is though, if you really want to learn these planes and the start up procedure, its going to take a hell of a lot more time and effort than memorizing a start up sequence. After all, there's a reason why pilots are so well paid! I have to wonder if real pilots themselves, who spend all their time flying, would bother to go through all the hassle. I honestly think if I really understood the systems as well as the professionals that that confidence and security in my own knowledge would probably make me more inclined to "just start the bloody thing" at the click of a button. I don't find the whole process especially interesting after a while to be honest, and dare I say it, it even starts to get a bit tedious for me personally!

[Official] SimShaker for Aviators

I know, I'm not complaining and am grateful for your efforts. Just pointing it out in case you didn't know about it or else I was the only one experiencing this problem and it was an issue with my own rig or something. -

Well we have our own opinions then buddy. It's not a big thing I agree but it does kind of feel a bit broken sometimes especially if you've just crashed an AC and it continues to shake violently when you are not in a plane anymore. Sometimes makes me think the game or software will crash and actually I have had historical experience with this happening with big crashes which might be why I associate the feeling with something not working quite as it should. Regardless I prefer it in great battles when the feedback ends as soon as the game is stopped or paused. Maybe being pedantic I don't know, just doesen't feel quite right to me and a bit unpolished. -
[Official] SimShaker for Aviators
Wolf8312 replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Edit- yeah its definately a spitfire problem. Collective works fine in my helicopter. I've noticed too though that the SS software in DCS has a nasty habbit of continuing to work even when I have paused the game or gone into the menu and it will take a while to stop rumbling. -
[Official] SimShaker for Aviators
Wolf8312 replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
No. I mean when I use the throttle (increase or decrease) I cannot feel any effects. I cannot feel the effects of the thrust increasing or decreasing when in an earlier version of DCS this wasn't the case. I can feel the engines, and guns and other things, but when I increase the throttle to max or pull it back down to idle nothing is happening, and it detracts from the feeling of flying a plane. -

Thanks. Any idea why the spitfire isn't working properly? The thrust seems to be dead, kinda breaks all immersion. -

Usually the release version but I also tried the beta to no avail. I think I will try a reinstallation. -

Wolf8312 replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Anyone know is the P47/DCS is supported yet? I keep getting a kind of simshaker crash when I try to play it (says oops something went wrong). Any ideas? I also seem to be getting no effect from the thrust or afterburner with my spitfire (on 100) whereas things like guns work very well. -
You think Ryzen is maybe a better choice than intel then these days? What I am interested to know is not how it performs on a few instant action missions but how it performs generally? Can you hold a constant 90 (or rather a smooth performance) in any mission? Those IA missions are ussually pretty basic I found and the problems tend to start when you get into some of the more advanced and proffesionally made content, which is a real shame because that is where the sim really begins to get interesting. I would love for example to be able to play all of the WW2 campaigns without any glaring performance drops but I don't want to spoil them for myself and play them before the performance is there. Have/can you try some of the WW2 campaigns (if you own them) and see how they perform? I'm not really interested in FPS to be honest just if it feels smooth to fly. I just got great performance on my index over normandy with quite a lot of stuff (dogfights etc) going on, but it doesn't compare to a real campaign. Haven't flown my spit for a while though, and man I forgot how great it is to fly. Especially with my new buttkicker!

You said 'were' truly wonderful times. Was this a dream by any chance?

Going to get one more new GPU in the summer before I go for a whole new build. It wouldn't just be for DCS though, as as you said yourself I think DCS will need a major revamp whatever happens. Always upgrade my GPU before getting a new rig as usually the CPU easily outlasts the GPU. Got DCS dialed in quite nicely now though (albeit flying my own missions against the computer!) and with 4x MSSA and everything else off pretty much (shadows are the real killer). I wouldn't even try MP or any full-on misions though. Haven't flown for a while too so am remembering how much I missed it (butt kicker arrived today too) just a joy to fly. Have to say it is a really nice headset and even although I can't crank up the res it is still superior to my old VIVE! Comfort, SDE, headphones (this is actually a massive plus over the old vive), weight etc. To be honest can't even complain too much about the performance as it's a hell of a lot better than it was when I got my Vive about 4 years ago! Thanks for the advice mate.

Thanks man. Seems bleak but to be honest I can still enjoy DCS on low settings, and I reckon if I had your setup I'd probably go for performance over eye candy, and run it at the same settings I have now. Of course its easy to say that now but I know it can be hard to resist! DCS is rough without MSSA. I think if the Devs focused on how to make the game look nicer in VR maybe! It's really only the buildings that are the problem! Want to upgrade my GPU though I'm not sure I can upgrade CPU without a new motherboard/computer so I'm not going to be doing that for a while. Do you think it would even be worth upgrading my GPU without also upgrading the CPU (i7-8770k)? Well probably will anyway but not with DCS as any kind of priority! I just kinda accept DCS for what it is. Can fly in limited scale engagements but the game itself is pretty much off limits though it has been performing poorly performance wise for a while now. Couldn't go back to track IR though! I'm honestly hoping for another combat flight sim to come out that has been built from the ground up with VR in mind! Theres also the other sim which has simshaker support now and works better. Can't compare to the DCS flight models though. At least racing isn't nearly as demanding though.
