"Enable Virtual Reality Headset" setting in DCS. Is it useful?
Wolf8312 replied to lwalter's topic in Virtual Reality
It just means the next time you load DCS it will run in VR mode. Unfortunately we still don't have an enable VR button that could allow us to switch in and out of VR only when we are good and ready to fly! -

Well my mistake regarding the crashes turned out to be running a stable sound module with a beta simshakers. Updated them both to beta and the crashes went away. As for the effects they seem to be better now (before they wouldn't load or certain effects wouldn't work, etc.) but I'm going in now to check. I am flying two relatively new modules though in the Apache and the Hind, may have been my imagination but the Gazelle seem more responsive. But as I say I've got to check it out myself! -
Have to say I am fantastically satisfied with winwings KA50 collective. Love the quality, feel, and immersion it brings to helicopter flights in VR and as one who has always loved helis most of all (but somehow, using a throttle, they always still felt somehow secondary to planes) it is a transformative experience. I would say the extension is a must however, as with that one is very much aware of pulling up/down, whereas without, it would surely feel more like using a slightly longer (backwards/forwards) throttle or gearstick. I never inverted my throttle for helis as I actually found doing so more immersion breaking (and dangerous), but with the WW (chair mounted) there's a definate sense of the obvious: pull up to go up and down to go down. It just feels like flying a helicopter! I find the safety guard works well in a dual roll as arm rest (I actually use it primarly for this) but I also found that although stiction and droop was a problem at first (though manageble with the armrest/safey guard) I'm not sure there's any real need for grease or counter balancing. Granted, I've never flown a real helicopter (which in some ways in VR is probably a blessing, as one is not comparing to the real thing) so I'm sure it may be a different matter to those who have, but I personally found that if you fly with it for a while it becomes smoother over time on its own. I heard from another user to keep the stick loose at first and once it had been worn in a bit, to tighten it up. Well that seemed to be good advice! The only droop I really get now is at the highest setting which may, for all I know, be realistic anyway as you don't really want to keep the AC at max lift anyhow. If one pulls the stick to the highest setting (which is not max) it will pretty much (for me now) hold in any postion all the way back down again as one lowers the collective. When pulling up however it seems to lock only in stages (it locks after sinking back down a little). However I have to say the safety guard means that it is no problem to hold onto the collective for extended periods (though in VR I don't fly ridiculously long missions anyhow) though of course perhaps this is cheating! Part of this may be muscle memory kicking in as well, as now I am accustomed to the amount of force needed to move the stick and can apply it in a smoother and more consistent manner. Well anyhoo layman review, but highly recommened if you are into helicopters or thinking of getting into them. Also have to rave, that DCS is looking fantastically good these days in VR, under the right lighting conditions (I like to use the mission editor and fly at dawn or sunset). Open XR toolkit seems to have allowed me to lower MSSA and increase performance nicely as well!

Actually my kid is playing Sonic generations, which is a fancy new sonic with modern graphics!

I have the same problem since going to 2.8. Some things kinda worked but most things did not and it was very erratic. Same JIT exception message as well! Edit: I've solved the crash (reinstalled sound module) and it may be okay, but it will have to wait now for tommorow to see if the effects are still bugged! -
Has this just put things back the way they used to be, and somehow I didn't realize that the stereo effect was no longer operating (with me assuming that I had simply become dulled to the VR experience somehow)? Or is what I'm seeing now how vorpx used to look (on stereomode) combined with normal DCS VR and what I am actually remembering is my experience with vorpx? Not sure, but if the latter is true then stereo/vorpx was more 3D than default VR... But big improvement! Strange how this isn't implemented by default...

Are they all (or any) old enough to appreciate what a beast that graphics card is? Or is it more like: grandpa's put a special card in the computer to make Sonic run faster (he's not!)

You will be a very popular grandpa!

Well, blown away by the winwing and collective experience! Yet another thing that I've tried and will now not be able to do without! Quality is fantastic, and although it should be for the price of the unit, there are those that will insist Winwing is inferior to brands like virpil. Well from what I've seen (and I own a virpil) that certainly isn't the case and I'm very glad I went with WW! As for flying, well... basically you're in a real helicopter! Inverting a throttle never felt natural to me, because with a throttle one is not so much pulling up/down but pulling back/forward(I think without the extension the difference may not be so radically apparent but with one there is a noticibly different effect/mindset). This would just feel incredibly confusing to me when using a thottle to fly planes (leading to many fatal accidents) so it ended up feeling more natural to *not* invert the thottle! No real problems with dropping or stiction, though the stick needs to be worn in first and tightened up more later I think/heard. I don't think I will need a counterweight or anything of that nature, though I have found that the safety cage/thing actually serves a duel purpose, as I can rest my arm on it without it tiring while keeping a loose hold of the stick. So to conclude by answering my own original question. If you're big into helicopters, you will wonder how you ever did without one. I've always loved military helicopters because -more so than planes- they feel to me like massive mechanical extensions of ones own body, as if one is a hovering and extremely agile mech or death machine.

Varjo Aero: Общее руководство для новых владельцев
Wolf8312 replied to Supmua's topic in Virtual Reality
Interesting. I often wondered if it would be possible to glimpse the downgraded peripherals when using FR, as we *can* still see many things that we may not be looking at directly. Do you happen to know anything about the foveated rendering that comes with the open XR toolkit? Is that also just a bit of a gimmick and would/does it work better (or at all) with Aero headsets that actually support FR? I've noticed that with the app/'mod' running it *does* downgrade the quality of the images on my monitor! -
If performance *was* good, would whatever is breaking it presently be providing any real benefits to VR or even 2D gameplay? Or is it just a bug?

I was just reading a reveiw. Is it right that because of foveated rendering and other functions that the Varjo Aero actually performs better than the G2 and other headsets? -
Sometimes I see some weird stuff (kinda very obvious bugs that are like flat planes of graphical corruption) like that but rarely. The only acceptable setting for me is ultra clouds though which is a bit much. Even high look bloody awful! Ultra do look very nice indeed but I'd hope that ED will do something about the clouds as we shouldn't have to have them on ultra in VR but any other setting is pretty unbearable in VR. I don't need super high res or PD to be happy but I can't abide shimmering!

Out of interest. Do those super expensive replica companies use polymers?

Well guys I've gone with the winwing KA-50 with extension and chair mount! My wife will crucify me in the morning but I couldn't resist. What began as an idle curiosity slowly seeped into my mind and infected me until there really was no alternative but to buy it. Could be a hobby could be a sickness... Actually the collective itself isn't cheap for winwing products (throttle much more reasonable) but I love how it looks (read the reveiws too) and as I live in China Winwing's a no brainer really! Hopefully my warthog throttle lasts a few more years or I'll be backwards man, flying prop planes and jets using a collective! Anyhoo, half excited, half guilty but I am paying for it in three seperate installments, and I never go out drinking in bars, or gambling darling. Yes. That should do it..

Ah got ya! Sorry!
-
Okay technically alloy! But as for the grip I was only refering to the plastic shell encasing the grip, not the grip itself.
-
Yeah that's one reason I bought a virpil because I'd rather have a metal gimbal with stick encased in plastic than a plastic gimbal with a stick encased in metal. But I assume the winwing also has a metal gimbal?
-
Have you owned a virpil? Plastic in all the same places. The warthog has an all metal grip (including the casing) though inferior base.
-
Which bits are plastic? Not the innards? I have a virpil stick myself (which has a fair share of plastic itself excluding the bits that count) but looking at winwing's throttles, I have to say, the quality of the buttons and constitution of the devices look pretty impressive. Virpil is great no doubt, but not without some quality/plastic issues (broken triggers in my case) of its own, after all, its in a similar price bracket. Have you had problems with the sticks?

No mate I used 'bud' because I didn't want to escalate, or it to seem like I was asking a snarky rhetorical question if I simply said "Do you accept its a mod, or we are modifying/altering some files?" I really didn't know the answer to my own question, but felt that if it *was* a mod (and I assumed it was) I could then clarify why I was using the word 'hack' by which I meant mod and thought you might have taken to mean something else. Lol I've made a right mess here! Wolf8312 quietly exits!

I was just following the guide on this forum, and was in no position to know if what you were saying would be more reliable than the guide. As it is an official thread that everyone seems to use for guidance, I assumed the guide would be more reliable and that I should follow the instructions (clean/repair) carefully. But by 'copy a single file' do you mean overwrite the openvr.dll file in the DCS bin folder with the 64 bit open composite dll file? Do you accept its a mod, or we are modifying/altering some files? Cause that's all I really meant by 'hack' bud
-
Well to be honest my repairs take a long time. Have got the toolkit working again nicely (using dll file) without a repair and it seems to be running fine. Not sure I've gained much performance wise (though I do believe its somehow better graphically) but its defo worth it for the painfully long loading times I was getting and I'm still able to use steam VR its just running through open composite. Hope it will remain stable after updates though I won't be updating until 2.8 is improved anyway I don't think.

Hum was considering this company but I'd be outraged if I was told I had to weld (myself!) an in warranty product! Mind all of these products we buy are a real pain in the ass should something go wrong with them. But that said my, out of warranty, buttkicker company (not sure if its BK itself or just the seller who is fixing) made me pay the post but still fixed it and are sending it back to me. That's a company I would use again! If I were you I'd kick up a fuss and tell them its their responsibility to fix it, and link them to this forum/post (or somewhere). In my experience these companies will often try it on (apple tried to tell my dad his new laptop had been water damaged) but if you're in the right eventually they will have to do the right thing.

Ah yes I see. For a minute there I thought it was a massive crack running through the plastic!
