I could die a happy man if they'd give us a MiG-29 as a full-blown DCS World module on par with the A-10C. I think the aircraft was groundbreaking enough, widely flown enough, and interesting enough to warrant it. I wouldn't mind a Tu-95 either, since I got to see quite a few of them in real life back when I was young. An Su-24 would be nice too, in light of the news these days. But really, I'd be happy for any Russian aircraft they'd care to give us. I always used to think, "Man, they've got some beautiful aircraft, but I'll never get near them unless relations improve." Well, now I've got DCS World! Bring on all those beautiful Russian aircraft!

I haven't been at it with DCS World air combat for long. I've spent a lot of time just flying and loving the airplanes, but not much in combat. So far though, I think I'm doing pretty good for a Yank flying a MiG. Let's see YOUR medals! Oubaas

Windows 10 does not like some of my hardware
Oubaas replied to Zimmerdylan's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I certainly hope that you're right. I'll eventually have to upgrade to something, just like I have in the past. Otherwise, I'd still be playing Jane's USAF on Windows 98SE. But I'd like to know the answers to things like, "What is unauthorized hardware?" so as to avoid things like seeing a Warthog with a Fat Black Mamba base become inert because it's "unauthorized hardware". Or not being able to play a favorite sim because it's modded. Once I know a little more, I may go ahead and upgrade. But they need to be a little more forthcoming with the information. I may be a bit paranoid, I seem to have noticed an increased tendency toward that shortly after becoming permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty during real life military service. But they could tell us a bit more on these issues instead of fanning the flames with silence. I like to make fully informed decisions. :pilotfly: -
Windows 10 does not like some of my hardware
Oubaas replied to Zimmerdylan's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Before you install Windows 10 you might want to read this: http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/407894,microsoft-can-disable-your-pirated-games-and-illegal-hardware.aspx? So, what does it take to have your game identified by Windows 10 as bad? Will community-modded sims pass muster? Would modding DCS be a problem? How will this affect heavy community mods such as those found in Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory? Would IL2 Sturmovik 1946 modded with the Community Universal Patch do it? What about IL2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover with the Team Fusion patch? Anything in Rise of Flight these days that might set it off? But even more worrisome, what exactly is "unauthorized hardware"? If you modded your joystick, will it detect that it has been modded? What about that new set of expensive, custom rudder pedals from the guy working out of his garage? Did he pay Microsoft to get his gear "certified"? Did adding that VKB Fat Black Mamba base turn your Warthog HOTAS into an expensive paperweight? Did overclocking your graphics card make it bad in the eyes of Redmond? What exactly constitutes "unauthorized hardware"? Considering that major automakers such as GM now contend that while you own your car they own the software in it which means, in their eyes, that you are not authorized to work on your own car anymore, how will this affect your ability to do what you want with your own computer? Corporate hubris knows no bounds. This may sound a bit alarmist at first, until you consider that people have had to disable "Secure Boot" in their BIOS and go to Legacy Boot in order to install a new graphics card from a manufacturer who failed to pay the necessary fee to Microsoft to have their hardware placed on the authorized list. And that was before Windows 10 ever came about. It's very difficult to say what this vague terminology really means. But if we look at previous attempts to dictate to the end user that have been foisted upon the gaming community by Microsoft, perhaps it will give us a feel for what this might be like. Anyone up for "Super Games for Windows Live!", now featuring the hardware police? And while it's snooping around your computer looking for bad hardware and software, what else is Windows 10 digging into, examining, and reporting to its masters? When they start giving you "free" stuff, you might want to ask why. When will they start charging for the fully automatic upgrades that you agreed to in the EULA so that you can continue to use the "services"? Section 7b - "Updates to the Services or Software, and Changes to These Terms" - of the Windows 10 EULA states that Microsoft “may automatically check your version of the software and download software update or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services..." Let's see, they want to "give" you Windows 10 for "free". But the EULA to which you agree allows them to check your version and automatically download update or configuration changes that prevent you from accessing the Services. And how do you suppose, once they've disabled your OS, that you can get back to gaming on a functional PC? Could it be that you'll have to purchase an update to bring your now disabled, obsolete OS up to date? Hmmm. And how much might that cost? How much has a Windows disc cost in the past? But you only had to buy a disc once. After that purchase, the updates were free. But what if they gave you the OS for free, then charged you each time that it needed to be updated? Over and over again? And your OS wouldn't work if it was not up to date? Better read that EULA again. And if that sounds far-fetched, then please explain to me why you only have 30 days to remove Windows 10 after installing, and after that, you can't. I don't know how far this reaches. Do they invalidate your previous Windows key if you leave Windows 10 installed longer than 30 days? If you fdisk and rewrite the master boot record, then try to reinstall your old OS, will you be told that your Windows key is not valid? Remember the "Genuine Windows" checker they embedded in your OS a long time ago? We don't have answers. The picture is unclear. Perhaps the 30 day limit is to prevent people from reverting to avoid having their OS disabled until they buy the necessary updates. If you have installed your "free" copy of Windows 10, you might want to remove it before the 30 days is up, just in case. You can always reinstall Windows 10 later, when the whole situation becomes clearer. But do remember, this is a one time only offer. You'll probably have to pay for Windows 10 next time, should you repent of it now. By the way, if you're tired of seeing the Windows 10 offer icon, simply uninstall Windows Update KB3035583 through your Control Panel. You'll have to restart. Here's how this update was described to you when you installed it.: "KB3035583 – Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1" More honest transparency, eh? Here's a little more detailed info on the "update"... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583 Both I and my wife have noticed that our PCs are considerably quicker now that we have removed the "free" Windows 10 offer from our system trays. I don't know what else it was doing besides annoying me, but it was slowing both of our systems down. I suspect that it may have also been responsible for a mysterious Internet bandwidth leak that we experienced about the time that it showed up. So if you have not installed Windows 10 yet, make sure it's what you really want. And if you have installed it, you better be sure you want to keep it before the 30 day period is up, or you might be stuck, with your previous key for your prior version of Windows invalidated. Anything is possible, and we're not being informed. But that EULA is worrisome. Add to that the fact that some people have had trouble with various sims not working, and have also experienced various hardware problems, and that Windows 7 and 8.1 will continue to be officially supported until at least 2020 according to one of the Microsoft execs, and I'm not in a hurry to take advantage of this marvelous "free" offer. I'll decide when more is known. And before you decide, you might want to think about the things that I've mentioned. :pilotfly: -
PRE-PURCHASE DCS: L-39 ALBATROS Discussion Thread
Oubaas replied to terence44's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Hmmm. If there's any truth to the rumor that we're going to DCS World 1.5 at the end of September, I need to pre-purchase the L-39 module soon. I love this airplane. -
So...I'm not the only one sitting at his computer wearing a silk scarf and waxing my moustache, eh? Glad to see there's some support for the idea, LOL! The more variety, the better!

WWII is underway in DCS World. How about some WWI? A Western Front or Verdun map with perhaps a Nieuport 11.C1, Nieuport 17.C1, Fokker D.VIIF, Fokker Dr.1, Sopwith Strutter, Sopwith Camel, Albatros D.Va, Roland CIIa, etcetera, featuring excruciatingly accurate flight models, including reliability issues and all the other issues afflicting pilots and aircraft of that era would be nice, and not as complex to produce as the systems-laden modern aircraft. Anyone else up for some wind in the wires a la DCS? :pilotfly:

LOL! Me too, frequently. Nothing like a good vortex ring stall! BTW, ZoRPA, love the signature, LOL!

I'd love a Tu-22M. Another one that would be great is the Tu-128, the biggest fighter anyone ever fielded.

Russian aviation, 1916-1998, from the Sikorsky S-16 to the Sukhoi Su-33 in 82 years. I pieced that together from screenshots I took in my various sims. Oubaas :pilotfly:

DCS: USS Akron (ZRS-4) complete with onboard Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk would be unique. You could fly the airship itself, or fly the Sparrowhawk. Imagine the thrill of landing a Sparrowhawk on a flying airship. I think the idea is a winner.

I just bought the Mi-8MTV2 today, and now have all available helicopters in game for the time being. I hope someone releases another one soon. I buy all helicopters automatically. My impressions after flying it for an hour or so and performing several landings? This thing is amazing! I love the Huey, but they are totally different beasts. The Mi-8 is like climbing into a Rolls Royce after getting out of a Jeep if you're used to the Huey. But I love 'em all. If it has rotor blades, I want it. :pilotfly:

Just bought this module the other day. True greatness. Well worth the purchase. Now I wander around in a free flight mission that I made looking for difficult places to land. The only problem that I've noticed with the module so far is that there's a bug with the wallpaper. Mine keeps coming up Army, when it should obviously be a HA(L)-3 Navy Huey on the wallpaper. I'm hoping that they fix it next patch. :D

I just bought the module today, never even glanced at the manual, jumped in and guessed my way through the switchology. Then I took off, went out and wrung it out hard for about half an hour. I finally came back to the airfield and landed, guessing at the correct touchdown speed, and again, no problems. Of course, I can read the Russian labels on the switches, and I spent my entire adult life in real world military aviation before I retired, so those things probably helped, LOL! This is an amazing module. It's the first aircraft that I've bought that I didn't want to tweak the axis tuning on my controls just a little. It flies just fine right out of the box for my tastes, and feels exactly how I expected this aircraft to feel. This is a VERY well done module and the flight model seems truly superior to me. Anyone who hasn't bought the MiG-21bis yet is depriving themselves of one of the finer things in life. This is one of those things that make me glad I bought a computer. Now, I guess I'll quit fooling around and start really learning this airplane. I'm going to have to break down and actually read the manual, much as it grieves me to read manuals. But this one is worth it!

I vote for the Tupolev Tu-160 or the Sukhoi T4. :pilotfly:

Next DCS (Russian) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
Oubaas replied to Milene's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Much as I would love a study module of any Su-27 variant, when thinking of aircraft that we might realistically one day hope to see in-game, I think the MiG-29 deserves more attention. There are plenty of people clamoring for an F-16, but I seem to be one of the rare few who would really like to have a MiG-29 study module. Nearly everyone immediately thinks Su-27 as soon as you mention Russian fighters. And yet the MiG-29 has played a bigger role in world affairs over the years. -
Important Info for ATI Card Users
Oubaas replied to Oubaas's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes, the image is better, plus the FPS gain. I use a 60" HDTV together with a 27" monitor on the side. My problem with the big TV has been with text being a bit blurry, but this new feature has clarified my text a lot, and at the new, higher resolution, everything looks GREAT! Add in a modest FPS gain, and this new set of drivers is a winner. Highly recommended. -

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. -
A new ATI Catalyst Suite was released this morning, 15.7.1. I almost skipped it because I just upgraded to 15.7 the other day. I'm glad I didn't skip this set. I enabled the new "Virtual Super Resolution" feature and changed my DCS World resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 2560 x 1440, leaving all the eye candy at the same settings, and I picked up 5 FPS with the Warthog, even with the increased resolution. You might want to check it out.

If they could squeak a bit further north and throw in NAS Fallon, I could die a happy man. Especially if they'd release an A-7E and an F/A-18C to go with. And of course, they could push west and add NAS Lemoore and perhaps put a landable US carrier off the west coast, maybe around Moro Bay, and I'd be even happier. Then push south toward San Diego, and... :D

Just got the Huey today and was able to find the skin I wanted.
