  1. Ok you have missed the whole point of the conversation. Wind drift and sideslip are 2 completely different things. Someone was claiming that the wind caused yaw during flight.depending on what direction the wind you are flying in is coming from. It causes drift but no yaw. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
  2. There is always a side slip and angle of sideslip, unless flying perfectly straight on or away from the airflow direction, which rarely happens. ??? Pilots fly balanced with negligble sideslip. And sideslip depends on control dection and is completely independant of the wind the Aircraft is flying in. At the top of climb we actually have a procedure to ensure the Aircaraft is flying balanced with no sideslip. Sideslip causes drag which costs fuel which cost money. If we flew around with crossed controls to induce sideslip your airline ticket price would go up. Your diagrams while perfectly correct are irelavant to the question, sideslip is never caused by the wind it is caused by unbalanced control forces and is trimmed out by the pilot. ( Again ignoring the Take off case) I am on holiday right now but if you want I will take a photo of the controls Eicas page at top of climb and show you the before and after trim picture. To imply that the wind in the air has an effect on sideslip is wrong , I am sorry but you are miss understanding the pictures you posted.

Thanks for clearing ut up yea the 54 on the F14 should be a lot of fun as they are putting a lot of time and effort into the missile from what I have read so it may well be the most accurately modelled one in DCS.   10. Fair enough to each his own, and it is a realistic Tactic. Problem is that the missiles are secret so the simulation is flawed. I hate Airquake I fly almost solely on servers that have no active missiles, at least the missiles present are somewhat realistic and so properly allow realistic tactics. Please dont get me wrong I love DCS and am on most afternoons when home, i just feel that trying to simulate classified missile systems is best left alone because invariably there is a major conpromise.   13. 1. Weather The shear for a 15kt ground wind being nearly 30kts at 1600ft is one of the worse shears you may ever see . Can you make it so that we can change all the winds so that if I put a 30kt crosswind on the ground then the wind is 45kts maybe at 1600ft. At the moment you have to change your drift all the time for a crosswind landing and it is unrealistic for 99% of natural weather conditions. 2. Canopies and Glass in general. A lot of the Canopies in the Game are unrealistically dirty, I know as a Dev that you want to show that the glass is there but often they are so dirty that in real life no pilot would accept the Aircraft they would have the Ground crew clean them. Maybe that could be added to the Ground Crew Radio Commands " Clean the Canopy". 3. Huds Not sure whats going on with the HUDS and this maybe a 2.0 problem but again they are too dirty yesterday in the Mig29 I had to peer around the HUD to see the Target because there was so much glare of the HUD. Can you clean them up again I realize that you want to show that the glass is there but they are so dirty that it is a problem operating and unrealistic. Not sure if this is in the right place so Mods feel free to move it if you wish.
  14. Please dont make the Canopy any worse a lot of them are so bad that you would never accept the Aircraft and would get the Ground crew to clean them. And some of the HUDs like the MIG 29's in NTTR right now are also crazy dirty IRL you never have to look around the HUD to see you target cos there is so much crap reflecting off the Hud glass.
  15. In Keflavik the F15's used to use the cable routinely when the Runway conditions were a bit marginal as the F15 can Raise its hook after use. Some Aircraft like the Tornado can only lower the hook which is a problem if someone is landing after you as it takes time to sort out, mind you the Tornado had reverse thrust so 99.9% of the time it wasn't an issue.

  17. Ok for the last time your diagram works on the ground cos the Aircraft is on the ground so the wind blows over it. Once Airborne it flys through the air balanced no one fly crossed controls ( there is an exception but lets keep it simple). The boat crossing the river is a great analogy the boat drives straight through the water but moves at an angle cos the river water is moving. I promise this is my last attempt to explain.

  21. Dcs is actually pretty good at modelling most stuff. While there are a few things that are way off and I really think they need to stop trying to simulate stuff that is secret still as far as flying goes, especially with a jetseat and the Rift its pretty realistic so your findings that wind make no difference to the Aircraft once its inflight, apart form the drift aspect, are spot on. There isnt any weathervaning once airborne. Most servers in DCS run zero wind so its not much of a factor. Tomorrow I will file a bug report for the amount of shear added automatically to the sim.   22. I guess this conversation has rather left the original point. One of the problems with DCS is that when you put a wind in they double it by about 2000ft which is rather unrealistic so that you have to adjust your drift angle all the time on final when you have a crosswind.   23. No when you fly the approach most people fly balanced with the nose crabbed into wind. There are 2 crosswind landing techniques. One favored by military pilots is to kick the nose straight in the flare and the aircraft lands straight when you kick it straight you have to use into wind aileron to keep the wings level. The second technique is to push the nose straight as you start to flare and lower the into wind wing to land with the upwind wheels first. I used the first method in the military and the second method on the B777 as it is much slower to respond
  24. Once the Aircraft is Airborne the Wind doesnt apply any force unless there is a shear layer or turbulence as the Aircraft is already miving within the Air. The only forces are Thrust Drag and Lift and weight plus the adjustments you make with the controls. Wind per se has no effect what at all on the Aircraft aerodynamically. You are just moving with you speed in the air plus the speed of the Air. An Airliner in a 150 knot jetstream has zero affect vs an Airliner in still air handling wise.   25. Ok I will chime in a little. On the ground all Aircraft weather vane into wind during the Take-off roll and you use rudder to compensate as you roll down the Runway after you apply Thrust, due to the side force on the Rudder. As you rotate the Aircraft and the nosewheel comes off the ground it will naturally turn into wind if you dont compensate. If you are in a large Aircraft we hold the nose straight using rudder due to the time it takes for the Aircraft to lift off and will end up slightly cross controlled. Once Airborne we balance the Aircraft and fly away either flying a track or a heading. When Airborne the Aircraft flys straight unless you are out of balance. Unless you fly through a shear where the Aircraft sees a change in the wind, then the Aircraft basically doesnt care what wind it fly, there is no weathervaneing in as you call it. If you fly a track then the Aircraft nose will be heading into wind but there is no Aircraft movement into the wind that is just your Autopilot flying the Track. Now if you are dropping a dumb bomb off an Aircraft with no CCIP and the Wind is from Rt to Left over the Target then you need to fly your backside over the Target. Your nose will be pointing into the wind slightly to maintain the Aircraft track over the Target. Again tho you are the one flying the track once off the ground the Aircraft doesnt know or care about any wind force as it is normally constant. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
