  1. The release version is nothing more than the original open beta version 2.5.0 that was frozen after ED determined that the bugs in it weren't going to break anything. As far as I know, there is one reason for having the open beta version and the release version (notice I didn't say "stable" version). The release version is used by multiplayer servers and solo players that don't want to run the risk of an update to the open beta breaking the sim. The open beta version is used by those who want the latest fixes and releases such as the Persian Gulf map and the Hornet. ED will release new content to the open beta first to make sure it has no bugs that can break the sim. After they determine it won't break anything, they will "release"it to the release version. When ED is satisfied with the state of the open beta, they will freeze that version and use it to update the release version. They will then resume updating the open beta version. It seems to me that most of the confusion stems from users not reading the descriptions of the two versions, that and their angst that the map and Hornet have been released only on the beta.
  2. Please see the post by@Tuesday. In this same subforum. Seems to have found a solution.
  3. If you haven't already, open the VR tab in the options. If the VR box is checked, uncheck it. If it is checked, DCS will start in VR always. If the VR box in the options, you might want to post your issue in the Steam forum. I don't believe SteamVR is required by DCS. I use the Oculus Rift, but I have never used SteamVR because Steam states that my system doesn't meet minimum specifications (even though it works well enough in DCS).
  4. Yeah, that's a real possibility. I left the Technical Publications Unit in 1986 before the F/A-18A and B even they went into production.
  5. I haven't read the manual yet, and my memory's a bit fuzzy as it's been more than 30 years since I wrote GE engine manuals for the F404-GE-400, but I seem to remember a system on the engine called the PLC (Power Landing Control) or something. I believe it was to control engine thrust during a carrier landing. That was on the F/A-18A and B. Maybe it was found to be ineffective and removed, or just hasn't been modeled.
  6. Open beta is version 2.5.2.xxx. Release is 2.5.0. I have both installed because I also use a multiplayer server that's only on 2.5.0 release so they don't get nailed from changes or bugs in the open beta.
  7. I ended up running a command line repair (DCS_updater.exe repair). After the repair, I double-clicked on the "updater.exe" in the open beta bin folder. My download started immediately.it might have been a coincidence though.
  8. The update still isn't downloading here in the Northeast. I guess not all servers have been populated yet.
  9. Have you followed the recommendation of the FBI to reboot AND reset your routers to get rid of the possible Russian hacker malware?
  10. Sounds like a good plan, or you can simply change your 2.5 release version to the open beta. There are many threads on how to do that.
  11. Still no love here in north east U.S.A.
  12. Yeah, me too. Taste like chicken!
  13. Well then, I apologize for mis attributing. I read it in a list of quotes by B Franklin.
  14. Benjamin Franklin said "We don't stop playing because we get old; we get old because we stop playing." I heard him say it.:megalol:
  15. Please refer to my previous post. I retired almost two years ago. I was in aviation for 47 years. I vividly remember my Uncle returning home from Korea in 1954. He was U.S. Army, but was at the Chosan Reservoir. My favorite MP server is "Korea 1952" (F-86, MiG-51, F-51, and TF-51) since that was a defining period for me. I remember scanning the sky to catch the glimmer of Sputnik and Telstar. I was on the rifle range in Parris Island, SC in U.S.M.C. boot camp when Armstrong stepped on the moon. I've worked for Boeing, Cessna, and GE Aircraft Engines. I retired from the Federal Aviation Administration, and must say that aviation is one of the great loves of my life. For all it's issues, DCS is one of my great joys. I get goosebumps every time I climb into the cockpit and fireup my aircraft for a flight. Even though I'll probably hold the record for Bolts and crashes, I'm breathlessly anticipating downloading my Hornet tomorrow. Please forgive an old man's rambling.
  16. When I was born, the P-51 was still in the USAF inventory. The Korean War had not started. I was a mechanic on U.S.M.C. F-4 Phantom IIs, and I was one of the writers of the engine maintenance manuals for the F-18A before it was adopted by the U.S. Navy. For me, DCS is a trip down memory lane, and I'm sure there are many on DCS who are older than I.
  17. I have both 2.5.0 release version and 2.5 open beta installed. I prefer 2.5 open beta for my regular use because some of the bugs in 2.5.0 release have been fixed in 2.5 open beta. But one of my favorite multiplayer servers in only on 2.5 release because the Administrator wants to make sure an update doesn't break that awesome server. Having two versions helps DCS satisfy two extremely vocal communities.
  18. Turnip, If you intend to engage in multiplayer (MP) at all, be aware that some multiplayer servers are using 2.0 release, and some are using 2.5 open beta. You have to be using the same version to connect to an MP server. The 2.5 release servers are using the release because they don't want changes to the open beta breaking the server. If an update to the open beta breaks your sim, you can just use the release version until they fix the open beta. That's the main reason I use both branches. If you have the space, use both or just one. Your choice.
  19. The raindrops work in my Huey, but are random and will appear with scattered clouds. I have heard that they don't work in VR. I haven't had ATC respond to my request to start engine at all, so of course, I can't get a request to taxi or request to take off until I'm already moving, then no one answers my requests. I also get the Nav lights in the cockpit.
  20. The P-51 training missions has a pretty good landing mission. It will start you at altitude and lead you through a series of gates, with verbal instructions, right down to the threshold. After landing, it has you exit the runway, park, and shut down the engine. I follow the training mission with the Instant Action landing mission. It takes a lot of practice, but it's doable. I used to dial in six degrees of right rudder trim when I was learning to take off. I never use any now, just pull the stick back and dance on the rudder pedals. One thing I do when taking off is to raise the tail (push the stick forward of neutral) at about 80-90 MPH. This reduces the angle of attack (AOA) to prevent lifting too soon and stalling. I do it on all of my taildraggers. Makes take offs much more controllable. Bottom line; keep doing the landing training mission until you develop the muscle memory and you feel comfortable. Then keep doing the Instant Action Landing mission until you are comfortable. HINT: the airfield elevation in the Instant Action landing mission is about 1,500 feet above mean sea level.
  21. There is a multiplayer server named "Korea 1952" on 2.5 release that simulates that era with MiG-15, F-86, F-51 (1950's designation for P-51) and TF-51 (unarmed for recon). The server and missions are very good.
  22. I'm having the same issue in 2.5.0 and 2.5 OB. I have a 4K monitor (desktop 3840x2160) so I set DCS to run 1920x1080 in full screen for better FPS (it basically almost doubles my FPS). Both DCS versions start with a 1/4 screen window. When I select a mission or quick mission, the mission loads in that window. I'm able to use the mouse to click in the cockpit in the window. When I use alt+enter to enter full screen (most times DCS doesn't change to a full screen when starting a mission), I can no longer use the mouse to click in the cockpit in the full screen. It is intermittent. Sometimes it works, but most times it doesn't. If I select a DCS resolution half-way between 3840x2160 and 1920x1080, it works, though it might be coincidental. This started since I updated 2.5 OB and downloaded the PG map. The issue just started happening in 2.5 release tonight. I have full screen selected in the Settings, however it never seems to open in full screen, so perhaps I don't understand what full screen is supposed to do. I've run cleanup and repair twice on 2.5 OB, but with no joy. I'd attach a log, but I've been experimenting to see what happens when, so I can't be sure that the log I attach will be an appropriate one.
  23. We all made the choice to download DCS World form either ED or Steam. It is my belief that most Steam users chose Steam because of the "super sales" that Steam runs, but the drawback is that new content and updates for the "Steam DCS World" can drop days to weeks after they drop for "ED DCS World," and Steam users can't take advantage of "Early Access" or "Prerelease Sales." ED DCS World" users used to be able to buy content on Steam and transfer the key to ED DCS World until ED changed the licensing system to cut down on piracy. Unless ED or Steam has stated that ED fears negative comments on Steam the statement is hearsay. The most logical reason is that ED wants to make sure all, or most of, the bugs have been worked out. That might even be a requirement of Steam because Steam fears losing sales because of a buggy product. Can you say original IL-2 Cliffs of Dover? I knew that ED could be more expensive in the long run, but I chose ED because I wanted the faster updates and early access and prerelease opportunities, and I feel that paying more justifies me getting those benefits earlier than Steam users. I'm not going to post complaints about Steam sales that ED users don't get and demands on the Steam forums because I chose to go with ED. Honestly, that is what I find most annoying with these posts. You made your choice and bought your ticket. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your ride. You'll get it eventually.:pilotfly:
  24. Have you contacted DCS support directly about the questions? That might be a better path than ranting in a thread on a forum. Tried to help; you're welcome.
