AMD 5800X3D, the new King for flight simulators?
Digitalvole replied to maxsin72's topic in Virtual Reality
I’m going to build a new computer soon (for the first time in about 20 years ) and was going to use the gpu and cpu from the Alienware I bought last year, (3090 & 5900X). Would I be better off buying a 5800X3D? -
…and rarely being truly happy with the results. But once you’re dodging missiles the fun returns and you don’t even notice the things you thought were immersion breakers. I think the future is bright for us, I just hope geopolitics doesn’t ruin it for everyone.

The constant battle to get better performance/visuals can suck all the fun out of DCS. I think a good approach is to get to a place where things are acceptable for you and then start a campaign (Liberation is my poison). Once you are actually flying missions it’s much easier to ignore the little niggles that drive you nuts when you’re testing different settings in a futile quest for perfection.

I’m sure it will be great, but with OpenXR DCS looks pretty amazing imho until you turn on motion smoothing. If they can find a way to have motion smoothing on but keep the clarity of when it’s off we’ll all be very happy I think. Will make the wait for Vulcan/multithreading much more bare-able. One complaint I do have about VR in general is that it’s not great when the weather gets nice. Not only does it get rather sweaty but it just feels a bit wrong to completely disappear into a virtual world on a lovely summers day. Makes me feel a bit like Gollum. At least with a monitor you can look out the window from time to time.

I think I’m lucky that I didn’t play DCS before VR so have nothing to compare it with, apart from YouTube vids. I do get frustrated with it sometimes because of the performance hit and loss of graphical fidelity but having tried it on a monitor (without TIR) it just doesn’t cut it for me. Its like the difference between playing a video game or actually flying a plane but you left your glasses at home.

OpenXR Guide - Deprecated - This time for real (▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)
Digitalvole replied to nikoel's topic in Virtual Reality
I was getting “uncomfortable eyes” before I set it properly. Though it turned out I’d had it set completely wrong on my original Rift and Rift S with no I’ll effect. It may be because of the smaller sweet spot in the G2 that it being not properly set effected me more. That or my eyes are just more knackered than they were a few years ago. -

I never noticed a performance dip, but then I usually set it while I was in the menus. Not long back I went to the optician to find out my ipd so I could set it correctly, I was a bit miffed to discover I couldn’t set after installing OpenXR (I’d moved the slider with my thumb as I dusted off my G2). But all is well now. -
OpenXR Toolkit Tuning Guide (updated 21/02/23)
Digitalvole replied to edmuss's topic in Virtual Reality
Thanks guys, I think I turned FFR off because it made the outer edges of the display look wretched. I bet there’s some settings to be tinkered with there though, I shall commence tinkering tonight- 688 replies

OpenXR Toolkit Tuning Guide (updated 21/02/23)
Digitalvole replied to edmuss's topic in Virtual Reality
I’ve not played DCS for a couple of months (summer, yay!) but I can see I’m now totally out of the loop. I only understood about 30% of what you typed! Oh dear, I clearly need to hit the books again. I have lots of Google searches to do, but could you maybe just tell me what FFR is? Speed of Heat mentioned that in his guide, is it instead of FSR? I thought NIS was the nvidia version of FSR.- 688 replies

Haha so true! Thanks for the info edmuss, and the thread. I’d love to be able to run with no motion smoothing, it looks amazing, but I decided a while back that the hunt for 90fps is a fools errand even with a 3090. I mean it’s never going to happen in mp or Liberation. I’d love to hear I’m wrong though.- 688 replies

G2 user here, have you guys found that your ipd scale no longer displays when you move the slider on the headset? I didn’t realise it was a SVR thing, I’ve no idea what ipd I have set now, yikes! -
OpenXR Toolkit Tuning Guide (updated 21/02/23)
Digitalvole replied to edmuss's topic in Virtual Reality
Please forgive my ignorance, I’m new to OpenXR. When I first tried it I was blown away by the quality of the image, then I turned on motion smoothing and a single tear rolled down my cheek. It went from jaw dropping beauty to kind of washed out and blurry. On the plus side I was able to fly over the Mariana’s for the first time and down low over Dover without getting a judder induced headache. So I think I’ll stick with it, I’m just curious as to why does turning on motion smoothing effect the clarity of the image so dramatically? This isn’t the case with SVR or the Oculus software is it?- 688 replies

Thanks guys, looks like I’ll be jumping in the Viper then, woop woop! Though there will always be a special place in my heart for the Hornet thanks to DCS, but the Viper is the plane I’ve loved since a kid. I think Iron Eagle has something to do with that haha!
-
Can I ask why it’s so good? Or what are the things that make you guys so happy with it? I haven’t flown in a while (it’s been to hot to use VR so I’ve been playing V Rising and painting my 40k models) but am feeling the urge once more to take to the skies. But not sure if I should hop in the Hornet (my most used plane) or continue to try and learn the Viper (the plane I wish I used the most, but life keeps getting in the way). Last time I played DCS, a couple of months ago, it was hard to lock anything up but other than that I was enjoying the Viper quite a lot. But the Hornet seems to have more toys to play with and ofc boat ops. I suppose im hoping you guys can help me make up my mind.

The following is part of what I said in a post a little while back in the Hornet sub forum regarding radar detection ranges: “So from this can we conclude the Hornet now does everything better than the Viper? I keep going back to the Viper because it looks so good and I really like the cockpit and just in general it feels like it has a higher level of polish and attention to detail. But every time I find something else that surprises and makes me think the Hornet is better in almost every regard.” I want it to be known that I was wrong, you will all know of course of how fu.. flipping cool the viper is, and how wrong I was, but I just kept getting hung up on how I was used to doing things in the Hornet. I always wanted to love the Viper and finally I think I do and I’m very happy about that, I see the light! The Hornet is an amazing aircraft and I don’t know which one I’d choose to fly into a modern (ie near peer) environment (I’d choose the Viper so I could run away!) but within DCS the Viper is hard to beat, thanks ED!

I recently plopped an AWACS in my training scenario mission set up to orbit at a waypoint. I was losing all data link contacts every few minutes so regularly that I suspected it must be the orbit of the AWACS obscuring the dish. Changed it to race track and problem solved. It can deffo obscure it’s own radar like BN said.

[Official] SimShaker for Aviators
Digitalvole replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I’ve been using the Simshaker Jetpad for a few months now, and love it! But recently I’ve noticed one of the things that vibrates isn’t vibrating. It’s one of the two at the base of my back, and is responsible for the vibration of the afterburner. I haven’t installed the latest version of the software from April, could that be the problem? Is this a common issue and easily fixed, or not so much? Thanks in advance for any help/advice. -

Thank you captain_dalan, that is very thoughtful of you and much appreciated. To be honest BFM and all that fancy stuff isn’t what I really meant, it’s more just basic flying skills that one needs to know when there’s not a computer secretly controlling your plane. I thought if I could learn to be a decent pilot first then I’ll try the dogfighting etc with a better idea of what one should and shouldn’t do. For example the coordinated flight stuff or even how to fly straight and level (I’m used to relying on a HUD that gives an accurate horizon line). I suppose in a nutshell I’m trying to walk before I can run, but most of the tutorials in youtube are about the running and not so much the walking, I’m assuming military pilots don’t start with the cool “zoom zoom/boom boom” stuff till they’ve done a lot of the basic “this is how not to fly into the ground” stuff. Also I’m a mud mover at heart, I’m still not sure how I feel about all this air to air malarkey in any plane tbh, probably because I suck at it. Was hoping to use the Tomcat as a stand in for a Tornado and do low level bombing. regardless, thank you again for posting that video. I’ll deffo check it out.
