*puts hand up* Seems to me 2.9 needs some extra care and attention. I’m going to paint some 40K minis and check back in a month or two. Shame though, I’d really like to check out the new Spitfire cockpit.
-
There are other types of people that use the same tactic… Looking over my right shoulder and seeing another Spitfire flying on my wing still gives me the shivers. I’m finding WW2 is making me very happy right now, but it was the jets that brought me here. The Hornet imho is the best module for VR if jets are your thing. I don’t get better performance (gpu/cpu frame times) in any other aircraft and it can do it all, It just does it at its own pace, also the HUD and MFDs are a decent size. I think I’m blathering on. Good luck mate, I hope it brings you as much happiness as it has brought me. I’m quite keen on the lack of reality at the moment.

Hehe my pleasure, but like you say isn’t it amazing to have such clever people here willing to help others. If your about to take the VR plunge and are coming from TrackIr, may I just say that it’s like the planes we fly in the sim, none of them are perfect at everything. I suppose what im trying to say is the ability to compromise is essential, VR is not perfect. It’s bloody great but you have to be willing to spend a butt tonne of money and be ok with less than stellar visuals. I always wonder what DCS would be like with TrackIR, I bet it looks amazing! But as tempting as those beautiful visuals are DCS in VR is the only thing in my life where once I put that headset on, my mind is completely clear of anything except being in a cockpit and living a childhood (and adulthood) dream. It’s not perfect though, compromise is required.

Sorry to necro a thread, but it played on my mind for months that I never replied to this. Life got in the way, sorry. wow! Such an amazing experience @Slippa that must have been, and what a man Tom Neil was. Thanks to @DD_Fenrir I’m reading the Silver Spitfire as my marriage seems to be falling apart. A truly fascinating read. This for example: Come to think of it I do t know where that pic will show up in the formatting, but dropping a Spitfire from 40K (40K ftw, see profile pic ) these people were beyond brave. So thanks @DD_Fenrir for your recommendations and sorry @Slippa for being so slack. Edit. I should have taken a better picture but I thought it was worth noting he did it twice!

I suspect your mobo will determine how well the link cable will do what it’s advertised to do. But that’s just my experience. For example, I spent £90 on the official link cable but it would not maintain any level of charge in the headset. From what I’ve read that is possibly a common problem with Asus mobos. Also I may have just been unlucky. Even ignoring that, I’m not keen on having to take my usb ports capabilities into account. Trying to get gpu and cpu frame times dialled for full refresh rate is enough of a job.

@sze5003 from a G2 (which I still own). Specs: 4090, 5900x, 64gb ddr4. It’s hard to describe the difference, the g2 is sharper in the sweet spot. For example the text on mfds or huds is better defined where as with the QP you can see some pixilation for want of a better/ more accurate word. But Strangely overall (and especially in the cockpit (double brackets! And especially in a warbird or dial heavy cockpit such as the Tomcat) it’s much nicer on the eye. The way light works seems more believable too, ie the sun low on the horizon. That being said I’m seeing some odd (and not good) things with night time flights. But the key factor for me is @72hz a non reprojection but with good gfx setup is achievable, it isn’t on a g2. Ofc it all depends on what/where you are flying, the ah64 or f15e is still going to push you into reprojection. Honestly I don’t think a QP is worth 1k if you already own a g2, but only because I think the link cable lets it down, and that’s probably going to be the case with the Q3 too. Only my two pence worth and I’m far from an expert in the field.
-
Will the Q3 be clearer than the QP even after the higher PD achievable with DFR is taken into account? Not to mention having 4x MSAA? Having just bought a QP maybe I don’t want to actually know the answer to that.
-
Settings are pretty much the ones you recommended. Anyway it’s all good, I’m just used to thinking “gpu/cpu” now I need to factor in link cable too. Thanks for all your help, just flew the mossie on the Normandy map and it was ace so I can’t complain.
-
Will do, have to be next month though. I’ll muddle on till then. Any idea what “app missed submit count” is all about? *looks suspiciously at link cable.* I can’t find much info on it other than: “Increments each time the application fails to submit a new set of layers using ovr_EndFrame before the compositor is executed and before each V-Sync (Vertical Synchronization).” The other thing I’m tinkering about with is bitrate because the default setting is bringing up some very noticeable compression, big blurry blobs where there should be trees etc.

Thanks chaps, like a doofus I had turbo mode on so wasn’t getting proper readings, what a plonker! With turbo mode off I noticed that despite being below 13.9ms for both gpu and cpu I’m dropping below 72fps (For example gpu 11ms cpu 10ms.) When this happens I notice “app missed submit count” is red and the count is going up. I’m busy trying to find out what on earth that means haha. I’m getting a shadow/dark patch at the top centre of the screen which is something to do with the quad views, and some odd things happen when flying at night, something is up there but I’m going to look into that at a latter date. Other than that and the comfort of the QP on me noggin I’m very impressed. I want to be flying in the mudhen right now but instead I’m training my wife/kids new puppy. Groan.

I’m having zero Google luck, what’s the shortcut for the inbuilt fps meter? All I can find from google is the performance hud overlay, which for the life of me I can’t find the gpu/cpu frametimes. Anyway I’ll keep googling, rarely get near my pc now anyway.
-
Apologies if I’m just being dense, but how are you guys reading your frame times? I’ve tried all of the performance hud overlays in odt and I still can’t work out what my cpu/gpu frame time are.
-
Right, sorry. First time I’ve touched it in a week or so. Must have it all backwards in my head. I made sure to read the wiki, but can’t hurt todo so again. Im going to test my usb port speeds as well. I’m sure the muddy/blurry textures are as a result of link cable shinanagins. Looks gorgeous in the cockpit though!
-
I’ve just finished a 2.5 hour session and my battery is at 84%. It would have been down to 50% with the official cable. I’m pretty happy with that. I have a feeling turbo mode is set to off in quad view settings by default, I tried turning it on and it got very stuttery. I may have this back to front though, I’ll investigate further. Today I was noticing some muddy patches on the terrain textures and trees, it looked like compression, like watching a YouTube vid at 480p. Is this just a side effect of using a link cable?
-
Thanks, I’ll give those a whirl. What is your main ride? I’m currently in the Apache, so I’ve given up on 72fps hehe. What are you guys using to check your frame times? The oxrtk one doesn’t seem to work with quad view.
-
The new lead is maintaining charge, hooray! Ive noticed that the transition from 72fps to 36fps is very clunky. I could well be wrong, it’s been a while, but in the rift/rift S it seemed to snap from 90 to 45 pretty seamlessly. Is there a setting I can tamper with?
-
Thanks mate, I’m gonna need it! Frankly the puppy is probably the only good thing that’s happened this week. Anyhoo, will deffo report back once the stars align and I get some free time.
-
Sorry, having a bit of a nightmare this week. Everything at home seems to be going wrong and (or because) we’ve just got a puppy . Haven’t had any time to do anything fun. As soon as I get a chance I’ll let you know.
-
@markturner1960 Persevere I will, I feel a bit of a fool for not thinking of plugging the C end of that lead into the power adapter from the get go. Though I’ve yet to test it for longer than 5 mins I have high hopes.
-
Yeah I remember having to do the same thing, again with an Asus mobo, I think Asus must have called Meta’s mum a fat slag once and ever since Meta make sure nothing will work with Asus mobos. I can’t do that this time as my 4090 is taking up so much space. I don’t have a power bank and out of reddies right now. Still, I think I’m making progress. A few concerns really, 1) I do often “fly” for more than 3 hours. Though I agree, it is a less enjoyable experience after that long. 2) if the battery last 3 hours when brand new, how long will it last in 2-3 years time? 3)For me it seriously reduces the value proposition of spending £1000 for the two reasons above (and a couple of others). My G2 is still a great head set. Anyway, hopefully I’ll get it sorted one way or another. Do you have it plugged into a power supply? I’ve now plugged the USB C part into the charging adapter for the base station and have seen some promising signs. But very busy at the mo so won’t get a proper chance to check till tomorrow morning. Getting zero power from any of my usb ports in either cable and I’m not the only one: https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Link-not-supplying-power-to-Q2/td-p/853725
-
Now you mention it… I’d assumed it was just multiple choice. I’ll give that a go latter and report back.
-
Yeah, that thought had crossed my mind but I thought it a little risky. Do you think it’d be ok? I don’t want to melt anything hehe.
-
That’s really good of you to offer, thank you. Tbh if I knew for a fact a powered usb hub would fix it I’d be fine to wait till next month. Im now using this cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0BM93GWF1?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title From what I’ve been reading it seems a pretty common issue for asus monos with amd cpus. I’ve tried it in a powered usb hub but I’m pretty sure it’s only usb 3.0 as I bought it years ago. Guess I’ve just gotta keep my fingers crossed a newer one will fix it.

Still can’t maintain charge with the new cable I bought. Very frustrating as other wise the QP is great. I’m pretty sure it’s because I have an asus mobo. I can’t afford a powered hub (3.2 gen 2) till next month but then I wont be able to return it if it still won’t maintain charge. Damn it I don’t know what to do.
