It is isn’t it, I find the throttle control far easier than even the Hornet too. id probably try the Hornet first if you can. It feels impossible at first, and I thought I’d never get it, but repetition really is key, oh and tiny throttle movements. It’s a hell of a lot for your brain to take in at first which is why the repetition is so important as it slowly allows each part of the process to become something you need less brain power for. Finally nailing AAR was one of the most satisfying moments in my gaming career, in fact it’s up there with landing my first 360 flip when I used to skate many years ago. I was buzzing for days! What works for me in the Harrier (with the KC 135) is keeping the pod on the tankers wing above the air speed on the HUD and the fuel line going “through” that black box on the left hand side of the canopy rail. I play in VR so not sure if this would work on a monitor. Also after calling “ready pre contact” I wouldn’t go above a couple of knots closure. : )

…is much easier than I expected! I was preparing myself for a frustrating time, and plugged in after about 10 mins of trying. Not as easy as the Hornet (though not far off) and a damn sight easier than the Tomcat. Still haven’t attempted any VSTOL stuff yet, maybe that’s where I’ll get bitten on the bum. Just wish this thing would go a little faster with bombs on. Any advice on fuel flow/altitude for getting from A to B would be greatly appreciated.

Crikey, shows how much I know eh? ; )

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?

DCS knows when you have been unfaithful… Wouldn’t it be great if we could get a PWCG for DCS? -

Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Oh mate, that is a grim twist of fate. Is there no one you could borrow from? or just buy a cheap thrustmaster in the mean time? Im finding out that my future is in the Harrier, I can’t give up the 90fps with motion smoothing disabled. Looks so good a smooth as silk (90% of the time). Though motion smoothing is better in SVR the image is clearer in OpenXR so I’m sticking with that. Would be amazing if the motion smoothing was as good as SVR, it’s a bit much in OpenXR. Alternatively being able to disable/enable it via the F2 menu would be perfect, hint hint. (May be impossible, I have no idea) -

I’d love to have something like that, I have mfds but it isn’t the same thing. What you describe would be next level. But to be honest I reckon if someone sat me in the cockpit of a real F18 (for example) and asked me to use the ddis I’d instinctively reach for my mouse hehe. The ability, or not, to interact with the cockpit as a reason not to go VR is one I’ve never understood. It really doesn’t take long to get used to if your mouse is always in the same place. I know that’s not what you’re saying here, Ive just heard it many times. -

That’s what I think too, after almost 7 years since the cv1 and always having to compromise and wondering if the next gpu was going to be the answer. And each time being quietly disappointed that compromise was still the name of the game At last we seem to be approaching the point where there’s no reason not to play VR. Well apart from the eye watering cost, but maybe that’s why we have 2 kidneys What are we going to spend our money on now? Ah yes, energy bills! (Disclaimer: I may be a little over excited) -
Oof, showing your age there mate, I’m pretty sure they’re all playing Crash Bandicoot on their Sony Game Stations these days… ;);) I don’t think your going to be disappointed @dburne, I’m very happy with mine (G2 user). I’m amazed you still went out to dinner! I would have been cooking up all sorts of excuses to stay home : D Whether they’d pass the “wife test” is another matter.

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I’m hopeful that that didn’t happen, downloading the drivers from Nvidia was the first thing I did after turning it on, fingers crossed. I had a go with it last night, WOW! No mods, no FSR/NIS, SS @ 100% (G2) I’ve even been able to turn flat terrain shadows on (I’m still on 2.7) and have better performance than on the 3090 and with much better visuals. I’ve been flying the Harrier on the Apache Training Ground mission (Syria) at a solid 90fps at 20 feet agl with the tgp on! I did have to turn MSAA off to make sure it stayed at 90fps down low over big cities but honestly I do t notice much difference where as I always noticed the shimmering before. I think having no upscaling makes a big difference there. Anything with a radar and the cpu frame times can hinder reaching 90fps down low at least. That being said on the F14 Syria free flight instant action I had 90fps by about 10,000ft. I haven’t seen 90fps in the Apache (Syria, Apache Training Ground again) but still, it’s a rock solid 45fps and you can really turn up the eye candy On the Spitfire/Channel instant action A8 Dogfight, with my 3090 I had a GPU frame time of 20+ms with the 4090 it is 11ms. Holy Sh…. A 4090 with the upcoming multithreading and I reckon we’re sorted, For a while at least, as cpu frame times are the main problem now. Thank heavens that it looks like that’s gonna be this year. Something I observed was OpenXR is very stingey in handing out 90fps if you have motion smoothing on. With it on I was always at 45, turned it off and it was mostly 90fps. Going to try Steam VR next as I have a feeling that it’s a better option if you are between 90 and 45 fps. So to my past self I say: Bloody hell yes, it’s worth it! I’m very happy indeed, and it cost “only” £1700. -

Looking at it now, I’m pretty sure you could fit a small to medium size iceberg in there with room left for a couple of confused penguins. Thanks for the tip, but I’ve already installed the drivers. it’s the first gpu that’s ever been in there so it should be fine, right? -

Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Sorry to be a pain, but I’ve just put the 4090 into my (brand new) machine and installed the latest drivers. Is that all I need to do? Is there anything else I need for tuning the card or should it be good to go right out the box? Sorry for the simpleton questions. -
Congrats @dburne! Woop woop Still setting up my new pc so haven’t tried mine out yet. I’m a little nervous as I have a long track record of electronic goods not working. I’m an EMP on legs. Thats what I did, gonna use the Alienware with the 3090 mainly for Combat Mission now (the fps will still suck haha). Recently I was wondering why my drive was full despite only having DCS installed on it. So had a look in program files and found 2 folders, one called “Dell” the other “Alienware”, together they were taking up about 600gb!!!

Ways to make the SP pilot/cpg relationship a bit more rewarding?
Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Aha, well that’s a very nice thing for it to do. Thanks @Floyd1212 As long as I don’t have it on easy mode by mistake I’m happy. -

Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Ive never been a fan of seat swapping, for me it kinda breaks the immersion. That being said I think you’re right and this is a good idea, though I’m a little intimidated by the button count in the CPG seat. I mean I like buttons as much as the next guy, but I think they may have over done it in this thing! Also I’m not sure I trust Pilot George. Joining a Squadron was my New Years resolution last year, it didn’t end well I’ve got young kids and the limitations that brings were not understood by the Sqdns I joined. Might have to try this too, though I’d imagine it works better from a static position. I can’t picture how you’d keep your speed up and be using the TADS. Multi tasking is not my strong point. I hope at some point in the future hunting for targets with George feels more interactive, like we are a team. Being able to zoom from* back seat would be a great start so we can scope out a target area, I thought it was a real shame this can’t be done with the lantirn in the Tomcat. On an unrelated topic, but I didn’t want to start a new thread, I’m finding i barely need to touch the rudder pedals when taking off/coming up to a 5 ft hover. Have I got some hidden assist on somewhere? I’ve had a good look in the options but can’t see anything like “auto rudder”. I’m on 2.7 btw. Edit: *missed that bit out oops -

Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Your case must be HUGE! Ever thought about renting it out to a student for some extra cash? -
As a committed singleton when it comes to DCS I really enjoy flying the AH64 but I must admit fighting in it is a bit dull. The gameplay loop of pressing “search for targets” followed by “engage target” gets old pretty fast. I know it’s best enjoyed with two humans but not all of us have the time/social circle to allow for this. So I was thinking of how the single player experience could be improved and was wondering what ideas others have? As I’m not, nor ever have been a dev I’m likely to suggest things that are either straight up impossible or take so much work as to be not worth the effort. But here goes anyway… 1) George seems able to detect units even if only a small proportion of said unit is visible. It’d be great, if that was the case, if he could give instructions on how to get a clear image/shot on the target. Ie “up a bit, left a bit” etc. At the moment he’s like a magic murderous flash light, shine it in the general area and that’s all you need do. 2) Alternatively, if he can see (let’s say) less than 50% or less of the unit he could tell the pilot something like “there’s something obscured in that tree line (followed by directions)”. 3)Calling out if he sees something that we might not have. Eg; your flying along and all of a sudden George shouts “Holy sheeet, is that a tank in that bush over there!” I understand that developing for multiplayer is easier than developing an aI that acts like a real person. Ps I bet this has all been gone over before and I’m just late to the party, if so apologies.

You are a legend sir, I don’t know what I’d do without your guides.

Rolling back to 2.7 is always an option, I’ve not updated to 2.8 yet and I don’t think I will till this is sorted out. Btw do you need to turn off all shadows or just terrain shadows to fix it?
-
Just starting out in the Harrier, the training missions look fantastic (why isn’t this the standard for every module?) but from what I’ve read not all of them are up to date since the Harrier has been updated. Are there some which are still ok or are they all a bit iffy? Thanks in advance.

It worked, Thank you @mbucchia Now I just need to decide which to use, as i find both have pros as cons.

Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Thank you! Here in the UK They seem to be in stock regularly with Overclockers. The state of our economy may have something to do with it. Sorry it’s been a pain for you to get one, though “Good things come to those that wait” apparently Im hoping I haven’t broken something trying to put the giant lump in my new case. The adapter needs to bend quite a lot in order to close the side of the case which is worrying. Talking of which I can only find two PCI-E leads coming from the psu and the adapter takes 3, am I screwed? Edit, I found another one, phew! sorry I don’t know how to delete the photo. -
Harrier profile wanted for the TM Warthog HOTAS?
Digitalvole replied to Comrade Vodka's topic in AV-8B N/A
I’m intending to re learn the harrier too (last flown the day before the f18 came out). Yesterday afternoon I just copied the bindings from Chuck’s guide and will tinker as I learn.
