Heatblur DCS: F-14 Tomcat - Episode 2: Cockpit Walkaround
METEOP replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Can't wait to see the cold startup video! How did you ever highlight sections of the panel while using a headtracker? I'm stunned! -
It must be one of those things the devs put in to look at us mere mortal squeel and shriek in disbelief!
-
Same here, what are we missing?
-
Totally agree too. The main thing that are keeping me away from VR, your gonna laugh at this... is an Existenz type of freakout. If you have not seen this movie from one of my favorite directors David Cronenberg it's going to redefine you views on VR for sure!

I would be delighted to do so, but since I have little time these days and I haven't taken the time to arrange a website for referring pictures, I will describe textually how I did it. Hopefully I can find some time to do this properly, I am very grateful for all the knowledge acquired from ordinary people doing amazing diy stuff and will be making good on giving back t the community, in time (soon I hope) I am using a Epson Home Cinema 2030 which is a 1080p normal throw projector. Mounted on the ceiling and lowered so that the upper edge is horizontal so about 6' from the floor. about 12' away from the screen. This (about) 12' was devised doing a crude mockup, to determine at what distance I could get the maximum size image for my screen at minimum zoom so that the projector would be as close to the screen as possible, trying to optimize the brightness. I took the design to RevIt (a cad software). I determined from calculation the radius of the cylinder to get the maximum screen size from a curved 4' x 8' x 1/8" masonite board. I made a completely self-contained frame to put the masonite board on. The top and bottom parts are cut with a jigsaw from a long rectangle of 4' x 8' x 3/4" birch plywood, in which I took 7 measurements to reproduce the curve designed in RevIt. The curve is concave from two of the corners of the rectangle. (wow I'm really not sure I'm explaining myself clearly) Once I have a picture setup (I have my own websites but have been lazy) I will gladly post all my dimensions so you might improve on the prototype. The top and bottom part are screwed and glued with 4x 'studs' of 3/4 birch ply to make a frame. Once assembled the frame will accept a 4' x 8' masonite board pressed into the curve, nailed at 8" interval on the top and bottom parts. After I mounted it on the gypsum wall using ordinary drywall plugs. I made the center of the screen at eye level when seating. I fired up the projector, adjusted the image with FlyElise, the proceeded to make a 'vignette' mask with black felt for car speakers, glued onto the screen with spray adhesive. Oh yeah! I forgot to tell you to paint it before doing the vignette. I used a slithly warm neutral gray because I already had it from another job. I'ts better than white for sure, better contrast, but I could definitely use some more research with projector paint. All in all, the total materials cost is about 60$. The Fly Elise software is more expensive but still the _only_ solution out there for our type of usage. I took the tape to the diagonal and it's actually 97". Trust me once your used to 'big' every inch counts!

Cap'n maybe I have a suggestion for your dilemma. I am using myself a ~90" diagonal, cylindrical curved projector screen. When I'm in my rig, I am sitting at about 5' distance from the screen. The screen completely covers my field of view. So in essence, it is a virtual 'VR', after a few short minutes my brain wrapped around the concept and the immersion is very much to my liking.

Just went from x52 to the Warthog myself. So sorry no experience on the longevity side of things... Call me stupid, but I honestly was surprised that the stick grip is casted aluminum. I modded the spring to make 'just right'. The throttle is a bit wobbly, nothing that a litthe DIY wont fix, in the meantime (while warranty lasts) I will keep it as-is and not do any warranty-defying mods, it does the job 1000% better than the x52. Kids play with the switches here too, these switches are so much sturdier than the x52. It takes a while to get used to the force necessary to activate them but now feels totally natural. The landings... omg the landings! You will want to get some rudders next for sure! I was seriously thinking about hacking a HOTAS DIY, but seriously, just the cost of the switches alone would probably have amounted to what I paid for the stick and throttle combo. On the value side I think the product is bang-on. I did not want to go with newer companies, although their products look very nice and in some ways better than the warthog, I have a habit of letting other people do the 'beta testing'.

Like alot of people I used to have crashes since the last update. However, it seems completely resolved now. The thing that really made the difference was dialing back my CPU overclock, I went from 44x multiplier to 43x. Since doing this I am able to complete all missions without issue, even > 1hr does not seem a problem anymore. Before doing this I was not able to complete anything. Before the update I did not have crashes of the sort, and my system benched stable with 3dmark. Go figure... Your results may vary, but as for me I'm flying high again!

Never tried the TrackIR software but the software makes a difference. I've tried the Opentrack that came with the Trackhat Clip and on my system it was ok but kind of choppy at times, and the worst regarding delay. Freetrack does not work anymore I think, no maintenance either. FaceTrackNOIR was better than the Trackhat Opentrack, much smoother especially when the framerate goes a bit lower But the best on my rig is Opentrack, the latest revision not from Trackhat, it seems to be using some parts of FacetrackNOIR as with the IR input module. So smooth and delay is much better!

You can export Ikarus to another computer running the cockpit but so far I have not come accross an efficient way to get the DCS exports to said computer. So far I was not successful in increasing performance by using a second computer so running everything from the same pc.

I checked it out, by doing a very quick google search on this topic all I see are rumors over reddit posts and absolutely nothing from Thrustmaster themselves or any other source for that matter. I cannot possibly believe this is true, imagine if USB devices could die at any moment!
-
I'm on USB 3, been a computer tech pretty much all my life and I cannot imagine how it would make any difference or cause any kind of problem. The USB is a 'standard' agreed upon by the industry, basically if the plug fits there is absolutely nothing you can do to make it wrong.

The Spratly Island !!! :shocking:
-
If I may... I am not hopping on the VR bandwagon because it is still in it's infancy so far as I am concerned. Try TrackHat Clip with Opentrack, it is bliss!
-
Great! Just like a did two years ago you will not be disappointed. Have a ton of fun!
-
Whoa! Very impressive. I hope you are not too disappointed by the actual result because it seems to me it will be a couple of years before DCS can fully use such ressources. In any case, I am interested in seeing what is the maximum practical performance of DCS is at this point in time so your system seems like the ideal 'no holds barred no budget limit' testbench. There are tremendous resources on the forum and out there for tuning, I'm expecting you will need to adjust a few things just because of the sheer number of monitors your running.

I like the 'shellshock' effect where all sounds are muted except for a faint whining (from acouphene) and it could fade to black. Then, you would slowly get the image and sound back as some kind of spirit rising towards the sky. You could look around to see what was going on without having the heart-attack routine. Some would complain that it's not realistic, but hey, it is 'virtual' combat I expect to see my kids after a DCS session.

I've just switched to MSI Afterburner, before I was using Tweak2 with the same results.

Hello McMisha and H-J-P, guys I am very grateful for your work as I get to have an incredible glass cockpit setup for my A10C! I still have crashes although I am not sure if it comes from Ikarus itself since the last update it seems to have helped alot. When activating switches, sometimes it causes DCS to lock up (no interface and last frame is shown). If I look at the task manager and look at the wait thread it appears to be DCS that is hung on itself over the network usage, if it makes any sense. The reason I am still suspecting some influence from Ikarus, is that It occured at leat twice doing the same sequence while starting up the hog, using the cmsp panel. At this point the GPU and CPU at not that much stressed. Other ocurences of such lock ups are mostly during very busy situations, with multiple attacking and defending units over cities and such. Sometimes even, Ikarus freezes momentarily while activating stuff, I go like, wtf, then I notice my main screen is locked up. About 50% of the time it will suddenly carry on after a few seconds, other times it's game over. As I am running _lots_ of softwares and overclock moderately, I am still thinking about dialing back my overclocks, if that is the problem. However, I troubleshoot all sorts of stuff so I have and am willing to spend the time into providing any information that may be useful to stabilize my system. Thank you so much again for the great piece of code.

DCS World - Heatblur F-14 Tomcat - Early Access First Look
METEOP replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I am ready :pilotfly: -
Not sure at all what could be the issue but I don't think anybody is reporting this kind of behavior, the optimization problems with DCS seem to be mostly on the constant stuttering when vsync > fps, at least for NVidia GTX plaform. Could it be some kind of background process that triggers every 10 seconds or so? Did you try to run ProcessLasso to try to see what is going on with your processes when that happens?

[OLD BUG REPORTS] Cleaning and Organization of old posts
METEOP replied to RAZBAM_ELMO's topic in Resolved Bugs
I am actually using the area around Vaziani to calibrate my system for a 'worst case' framerate scenario. It is indeed a little depressing. If you take a look at my specs I have a decent system. However as you may be aware with the NVidia GTX platform it seems that the only solution to get a smooth experience is with vsync locked in at 60hz or more. When the framerate goes below 60fps you get bad stuttering, below 50fps it becomes unplayable. So I fly around low (angels 3 or less) towards Vaziani, turn on TGP and zoom in. To get >50 fps in this situation I need to put the objects distance factor to 'low' and MFDs at 256 resolution. At least now I can play the Georgian Hammer campaign. -
Good point. I did not add it to my list though, for some reason it always felt weird to me to look at my 'virtual' self in-game so I wouldn't activate it. I'm running a head tracker, I guess for VR it makes alot of sense to see your own avatar.

when you think about it jester is just a manual bitching betty
METEOP replied to CheeseCake's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Can we still say bitchin in 2019? Bad joke aside, I understand what Cheesekake is saying, in that all these 'AI' are nothing but 'expert systems'. But seriously, I see it more like a matter of believing in Santa Claus on Christmas... To get that magical feeling. Can't wait to try how it will affect 'immersion', positive or negative? So far I don't think we have enough material out to judge on this aspect.
