  1. Yeah, I saw the same thing with low water settings last night in VR. I switched to medium water settings and it went away.
  2. ^ This, 100%. These types of threads seem to come up pretty often, and it's often a head-scratcher to me when the people asking the question don't like the answer. The correct answer is "manage the aircraft so that you roll out into the groove on centerline, then actively fly the plane to maintain the glideslope and centerline all the way down to the deck." For some reason, when seeing this, there are quite a few who seem to feel "bUt MatH, anGLeS, vElociTY!!!"... This makes me think that one thing that is way overlooked in sim flying is basic stick & rudder skills. On your first few flight lessons, the refrain from most CFI's is "LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!!!" I think it would do most sim pilots a lot of good to forget the math thing for a bit and just focus on flying the plane by looking out the window. I admit, they are usually fun threads though.
  3. Yeah, I think the big challenge with any dynamic campaign system on DCS will be performance. I have a high-horsepower system and regularly play Liberation in single player VR, and any mission with a decent number of units brings framerates to an abysmally slow level (especially in Syria). I'm hopeful that they find a way to significantly improve performance so that a dynamic campaign can be enjoyable, even for those with more modest systems.
  4. Man, I don't even know what to say... I didn't even know there was a way to increase the default resolution on the Quest 2 headset itself. I've had it for about 6 months, fought with it to try to fix the blurry graphics until I've been ready to lose my mind, and though upping the PD in the oculus program was the only fix. I just maxed the resolution with SideQuest, dropped the PD to 1, maintained my graphics, and wildly improved my framerate! You ROCK! Seriously, I appreciate the help. This is a game changer. As a frustrated side note, why on Earth would they ship the Quest 2 set to a lower than max resolution?
  5. My settings are attached. I've done a ton of reading other topics, but the biggest challenge I've seen is that there really is no benchmark... there's everything from people claiming to get steady 90 fps with a Quest 2 with a 2070, to people saying 36 fps is pretty good, but none of the reports are run on a consistent mission for benchmarking, so it all seems to be pretty meaningless as I too get decent fps when flying a free flight mission in Nevada with no other units, but bog down to 20 fps with a Liberation mission in Syria with 350 units. My quest is set to 72 hz, 1.5 PD, with DCS set to 1.0 PD. You'll see that everything is basically set to low with the exception of Textures. Regarding OTT or ODT, the advice seems to be totally scattershot with some saying to use it and others saying they make no difference. Open to any and all ideas. Thanks!
  6. Open Beta, Quest 2, Syria map, DCS Liberation, F-16, but candidly my frame rates aren’t great in any scenario. Can anyone share their settings? I get around mid-30’s FPS inconsistently. Not sure if that is par for the course, or if anyone has advice for tuning the Quest 2. Any advice appreciated. System specs: 5950X CPU RTX 3080 64 GB DDR4 M2 NVME SSD Win 10
  7. Makes sense, and I get it, especially if you have good customer service and a good product. Is it fair to assume that those customers aren’t saying “take as much time as you need!” along the way though, especially after they’ve paid? I guess my curiosity is more around the “take as much time as you need!” perspectives, and the “dude, chill, it’s just a small delay!” comments. First, on the take as much time as you need deal, that comes across to me as a bit strange, as at some point even the most hardcore DCS devotee would say “too much.” Why is it wrong for some folks to say “too much” at three months when others will say “too much” shortly after? Second, on the chill it’s a small delay thing, the problem with routinely missing dates is that it builds a pattern of not being able to rely on information. How do these folks making these comments know it is just a small delay? It might be, or it might not… the pattern is that the estimates aren’t reliable. I will be the first to admit… life is good when these are your biggest problems!
  8. One other thing… having spent a day or two in marketing/understanding consumer behaviors, a couple honest questions I wonder about: - how many delays would start to irritate people during a preorder period? Everyone, even those saying “take as much time as you need!”, has a number. - how long a period of time do most find to be acceptable for a delay/delays? Again, everyone has a number. That is what I wonder about when I see the “take your time!” posts… are people still saying that at 6 months? A year?
  9. I guess the point I see so many people seemingly miss in this community is: The flight sim world is a pretty small group of folks who are way, way passionate about the hobby. If you have a practice that on a regular basis pisses off a segment of the community, you probably should re-evaluate that practice. ED has missed dates since time began. As producers of quality flight sim content, they are great! As marketers of said product, they’re actually pretty damn bad, especially in the product launch process arena. This one has been especially bad. I don’t think the thing pissing people off is a delay… it’s that the original date advertised appears that it was never possible, the second date now appears it was never possible, and the third date is an ambiguous “Q1, maybe.” The fact that a few days before the latest delay the message being sent was “still January until told otherwise” rather than “we don’t even have a working cold start yet” is what irks people. Anyway, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I guess my though is that I’d just like to see ED do a better job with how they manage and communicate product launches to minimize the constant and repetitive dissatisfaction that they subject themselves to.
  10. I have to say, I get it… it’s a minor thing to delay a video game in the grand scheme. However, their dates weren’t, and usually aren’t “vague.” The pre-order video closed with a black screen with a giant “2021” image. In Dec, they unambiguously said “late January”. Along with this, the pre-order videos made the product look to be in a very advanced state. The idea that they hadn’t even got as far as doing a cold start procedure, worked on the hold modes, etc really wasn’t disclosed. I’d also note that until yesterday, the community managers were basically saying “everything is good for January unless we tell you otherwise” only for ED to deliver the third or fourth delay. Clearly both sides are right… it isn’t a big deal that it is delayed, and you can’t blame people for being frustrated that the product that they pre-ordered with a delivery date of 2021 isn’t even close.
  11. Lol, nope. Not sure who you’re referring to, but ED has a long history of missing dates. They launched the pre-order with a big “2021” ad, so I’d say it’s reasonable to say you’re “annoyed” which is the exact word I used. The actual sequence of events was “2021!”, then “late January”, then “maybe Feb / Q1.” You’re right, it’s not the end of the world! Life goes on. But saying you’re annoyed and commenting that they ought to endeavor to figure out a better way is something everyone who paid for the module under the impression it was coming in 2021 has the right to do.
  12. Gotta be honest… that’s annoying. When the pre buy period was opened, it launched with a video that concluded with a giant “2021” scene. That slipped to late January, which as a longtime DCS customer wasn’t surprising, but it has been clear that they weren’t going to make it so the last minute “surprise, we hope for Q1” is odd. While I hear everyone on the “take the time to get it right” train, and agree with this sentiment, I’d add that they should learn from prior marketing mistakes and not repeat them. They lose a significant amount of the “hype” with the persistent and predictable delays. To end my rant on a positive note, it’s a great flight sim and an unmatched product! It keeps my flying fresh when I can’t get up in my real plane, and I’m very thankful to the ED team for making a fun product!
  13. After playing the Zone 5 campaign, I was sure that Zone 5 set the standard for what a combat flight sim campaign ought to be. I'm now six missions in to Fear the Bones, and without a doubt this campaign at least matches Zone 5. Fear the Bones perfectly captures not only the challenge of naval ops and demands that you really understand the Tomcat, but does it in a really engaging, entertaining way. The campaign somehow captures the feel of the late 80s as well. Couldn't be more satisfied. I've felt for a long time that the biggest opportunity to improve DCS would be with some really quality content, stuff we could actually DO with the top-notch aircraft simulators that DCS delivers, and these campaigns really are bringing the goods. Great work to reflected, overall a really awesome campaign!
  14. When you refer to disabling Oculus “home”, what are you referring to and how does one do that? Haven’t come across this one to my knowledge. Thanks
  15. Way, way better. Like a different game. Great work!
  16. Yes, sounds about right to me, unfortunately. I run basically at high textures, low terrain textures, low water, flat shadows, everything else off, no clutter/grass, .8 PD, and I get about that same fps. My system is Ryzen 9 5950X, RTX 3080, 64GB 3200, NVME SSD, Oculus Quest 2. I have to say VR performance in DCS is miserable. Look no further than the VR section on this forum. Note… I love DCS! I don’t mean this as any sort of being unproductive… just that there is work to do on VR performance (and game performance in general). As far as flight model, cockpit, systems, etc, DCS is unmatched. :)
  17. Sorry Sir. I am a stupid arse at times. You didnt deserve such a rude response and your point is obviously valid. No worries dude! I’m still holding out hope it gets sorted out quickly, and that some big improvements come to the sim’s base performance level.
  18. Goodness, didn’t mean to offend there, buddy. I think the point holds true with one key change… this wouldn’t be a conversation if the base performance of the sim weren’t so abysmal for both 2D and VR.
  19. This, 100%. I see no issue in 2d at very high settings, but have to reduce PD in VR and still have a significant loss vs 2.7.6. The refrain of “it’s probably lower end/older systems” is frustrating, as I have a fairly top-end machine. Hoping they get it sorted soon, but really, overall, the sim needs optimized badly. This wouldn’t even be a conversation if good performance in VR were a thing in DCS (in liberation or any sort of complex mission, decent frame rates on decent graphics settings look like ~40fps w/ my machine pre-2.7.7).
  20. I agree with the above post. My setup is similar (5950X, RTX 3080) and I run the same settings with about the same results as above. Now, if you run VR, all bets are off.
  21. Yes. Beta. Rock-solid 36 FPS in Tomcat in DCS Liberation on Persian Gulf map to low to mid 20’s FPS in same scenario. My system is Ryzen 5950X, 64G RAM, RTX 3080, SSD, Oculus 2 VR. Performance in flat-screen is still fine (mid 80’s FPS).
  22. Wild, I have almost the same system (Ryzen 5950X, 64GB RAM, RTX 3080), and I have a huge performance hit with the latest open beta. Are you running VR? I am (Oculus 2), and my guess is that non-VR isn’t pushing your system hard enough to feel the hit in performance.
  23. Lol, I’m laying in bed. No track tonight, but if you go to YouTube you can watch people land in DCS and in real life carrier ops to your hearts content. Better yet, watch a cockpit vid of a hornet pilot where you can see him work the stick on final. I guarantee he’s adjusting much more actively than you are flying the plane. What you are stating about the angle is true, but irrelevant as the ship steams to maintain 25-30 knots wind over the deck. This is adjusted for every day in real life by flying the plane to where you want it.
  24. Here’s what I’ll tell you: you are rolling out left and getting farther left throughout the approach. Yes, the ship is moving. There is also a not so subtle crosswind across the deck due to the angle between the deck and the carrier’s movement. But at the root of your problem is basic stick and rudder… You rolled out left and get farther left down the whole approach. How did the plane get farther left? You flew it there. Roll out on centerline and stay there. Forget about the ship’s movement. Fly the plane. In real aviation, when landing, the wind will often blow across the runway at speeds well in excess of 11 knots, and the plane will badly want to turn into the wind, mis-aligning you to both the centerline of the runway and pointing the nose across the runway (“crabbing” as you fly forward). How do you adjust for this? By flying the plane! Source: real life pilot.
  25. Actually, I know exactly what you are referring to, and no, your “angle” will only be wrong if you don’t correct during your approach. You need to maintain the centerline down the entire approach. If you find that you are left of centerline, which you are in every pic you posted, or that the nose is now pointing down the deck (toward the bow of the ship) rather than down the centerline, you should correct for it. You don’t just roll out and then hang on for the ride. In every pic you posted, you are well-left of centerline. Get lined up. You’re starting our left and never adjusting.
