My eyes are so fubar... strabismus, nearsighted in one, farsighted in the other... it was actually really hard to see through the rift, had to twist it a little to one side and dial the IPD really low and even then that sucker was trying to make me blind. With the S its easy to get it close enough. I feel for you guys with perfect vision, where "close enough" is just enough to irritate the daylights out of you. People like me are in a different boat. We have a hard time fusing images, but in our defense we get really good at sorting ambiguity. Get really good at using environmental cues to make up for the lack of stereoscopic vision, amazing the ability of the brain to "fill in the gaps" information-wise. We don't really care if things line up -- that's kind of a lost cause -- and having even a slightly larger sweet spot really helps a lot. A real lot. It's just amazing to be able to slap an optical device on my head and have it just work, I mean, dang. Coulda knocked me over with a feather. I don't mean to rant but I imagine there are people like me out there quietly wondering if the Rift S will make their eyeballs bleed or something... I'm here to tell you, go for it dude.

Couple of comments. Actually about a million comments but let's start with a couple. 1. We don't have to eat the whole buffet in a single sitting (not that I've haven't tried, many a time). First thing I would do is put up a poll here, see which of your ideas generate the most interest. Which, around here, will likely be the ones that generate the most long-winded arguments :) 2. Think of a name, as "Top Gun Tournament" is already taken (scroll down to the 6th thread ;) ). Maybe name it after an large scale exercise like "Red Flag" or "Cobra Gold." Or show our Russian and Chinese friends some love and call it "Peace Mission." Cuz if they let us DCS'ers run the world, the world would be at peace! Something, make it your own

Probably what's holding them back is the general lack of interest in using controllers in VR. Believe me I was all into the controllers at first but eventually gave up and got a decent gaming mouse. Easier to use, more functional (there's no such thing as too many buttons) and less futzy. Wearable devices (Mile's finger-mouse, captoglove) or leap motion is probably where it's all going. Even then I'm not sure I want to give up my extra buttons

Well well well. I can see now. Steam gauges are much more legible, can tell how fast I'm going in the tomcat now. Hornet DDI's are a little better but still blurry. Spotting way way way better, I can pick some aircraft out at 10 miles. I think the sweet spot lens-wise is much bigger than the CV1. I had to get my rift *just right* to see clearly, not so much at all with the S. Frickin cable weighs a ton Had to turn my PD down to 1.2 from 1.4 but that's fine, I can still see better

BTC is up, I expect it to go up further between China instituting capital controls and the US printing money on the eve of recession. It'll drag up all the other crypto's with it. My money says, GPU prices get bid up over the next two years. Small time miners, especially if they have subsidized electricity, tend to like powerful GPU's. If you see a dip in the price of 2080ti, you might should grab one quick

Yeah I'm on my third Ryzen now, overclocking definitely helps multicore performance, at least on the more expensive CPU's, but my feeling especially for the less expensive CPU's is, you can make it run hotter but not faster in DCS. Probably by design, AMD has said their strategy is not to leave anything on the table single-core-wise. With that in mind, might be worth looking at the "X" versions, and look again at the price differential. To be clear, I'm happy. But that's mainly cuz I was too cheap to buy a new mobo

From what I've read, deferred shading just destroys MSAA. From my testing I don't think MSAA is any worse than supersampling, but it's every bit as expensive. I haven't been around that long but I do remember when people were pushing PD 1.8 - 2.0. Doesn't seem like that's a thing anymore; seems like if you can live with MSAAx2 or PD 1.4, a 1080 or the equivalent is plenty. Nobody in my squad has anything better and some of those guys are downright frightening. We all have decent CPU's and lots of RAM tho -

It's more like Shroedinger's GPU for most of us it seems You're wisely emphasizing anti-aliasing settings, I feel that deserves further comment... GPU doesn't solve all or even most problems. Other than anti-aliasing, pretty much any adjustment in settings affects the CPU at least as much as the GPU. So let's say you have the best CPU and RAM money can buy and you're trying to squeeze out a little something extra on a busy multiplayer map. By going from a 1080ti to a 2080ti, only thing you're guaranteed is the ability to push the PD or supersampling. Pushing MSAA from 2x to 4x apparently costs you more than the 2080ti can give. Pushing shadows? Maybe, if you're on an empty map. Pushing vis range? Forget about it; your CPU is maxed, upgrading your GPU isn't going to help. Now, it depends. Those who say "every fps counts" are (more or less) getting the science, they just aren't getting the economics. In economics, everything happens at the margins. To give an example, if your render time is 23.5ms, lowering that by 1ms will have a huge effect on game play. If your render time is 22.5, it will have no effect whatsoever. Likewise if your PD is 1.2, being able to push that to 1.4 makes a big difference in game play (on an Oculus at least). If your PD is 1.8, pushing that to 2.0 isn't going to change anything in real terms. All depends on how close to that edge you are. It's not hard for me to imagine that an HMD with a high pixel count like a Pimax may need that extra 35% to maintain 45fps (if that's even enough). Interested to know how the Reverb fares. At the other end of the scale, if you're running an Oculus, after a certain point you're putting lipstick on a pig... -

Just to clarify, it's not that the full fidelity a/c have an overwhelming advantage (the AIM54 is a pain in the fanny but that's a different matter)... if you doubt that, hit Coxy up for a demonstration lol.... it's that not as many people fly eastern block jets, right? I think there's kind of two questions here. 1. How to incentivize people to show up to play red, and make it fun for them? 2. How to make it so you can just drop by for an hour and have fun? As for the first, I think you can do stuff with mission design. Very interested in MOOSE and its capability for integrated air defense and AI balancing. This disincentivizes people to just jump in an F15 and start spamming missiles, you can do that but the AI will out spawn you 2 to 1, winds up being pointless. On the other hand, you can definitely spool up a red coalition aircraft and go hunting, and not find yourself outnumbered 4 to 1, quite the contrary actually. Even the potential to take an F5 out for a spin and get something done if you want. The problem is, it doesn't lend itself well to just dropping by for an hour, it's just not fun for a solo player on blue side. You can do that on GAW, not very effectively but you can do it. That said, GAW is close, it would be cool if you could hop into a redor jet on that server. But at the end of the day, I think we want at least one side focused on a mission and I don't think that lends itself well to just dropping by -

OK. So, we need talented players, mission designers, comms... none of those are rate-limiting steps. The only rate limiting step is deciding when and where. (Because I'm not sure what we want lends itself very well to dropping in...) So.... 1500z every saturday? I mean, we can fly, or gripe... -
OK I couldn't stand it anymore, I ordered one. I'm going blind trying to see anything with my CV1, I'll take any improvement at this point... No way I'm gonna be able to run MSAA and PD>1 both at the same time, gotta pick one. I take it you guys are liking PD more than MSAA? I'm currently running PD 1.4, MSAA off... thinking about just leaving it there...

I'll just mention for the record that the T16K throttle has the radar elevation control you're looking for and a functional TDC stick. I mean, if you have to fly around on something that's not exactly what you're looking for, there's an argument for not spending any money on it right -

Cool. What? Specifically, let's assume you're logged into a busy multiplayer server (so your CPU render times are >11ms right out the gate) you have a top notch CPU, great RAM and say a Reverb. What can you turn on with a 2080ti that you have to leave turned off with a 1080ti and still be able to keep the total render time <23ms? -

No, that is the topic. I mean, *obviously* you can drive more pixels and do more anti-aliasing with a 2080ti, it's just very cost-inefficient to do so. People who don't want to take a crap shoot on a used 1080ti, or choke down the high marginal cost of a 2080ti, are wondering what the alternative is, if any, at the price point of a used 1080ti. And that's a big unknown. We have an array of cards with low TMU counts which may or may not do what we want in DCS and we won't know until they are benchmarked *in DCS.* Shortcut is asking a good question, and I think the answer might be, "nothing." Going from 50 to 60 FPS accomplishes precisely nothing in VR, won't make him any more competitive or make the game any more enjoyable. The question is always, what will it take to get me to 45fps? For a Pimax the answer might be "nothing," for a Rift S (@40fps) "almost anything." The rest of us thinking about upgrading our HMD's and GPU's -- with scarce resources, meaning we have to make choices -- the question stands -
I don't know if it's a bug or just realistic. Helps to know where the bad guy is if you're using LTWS. Narrow the beam, don't try to scan the entire sky. Be close, consider medium prf. One of my buddies suggested narrowing the azimuth, which definitely helps, but I find it a little more helpful to go to a 2-bar search and just pay attention to contact altitude, which you can get off the SA page or from a bogey dope. Either way, a 4bar wide search in interleaved mode? forget it you'll never see anything

Here's what I would do 1. "Set up USB game controllers" via windows, make sure all your buttons are working 2. Ditch TARGET if you're using it, bind everything direct in DCS 3. Look for conflicts with other controllers. You don't have to read down the column -- DCS won't let you map the same button on the same controller -- but you have to read across, make sure no other devices are mapped to that function (except your keyboard -- is your "G" key sticking?) 4. If you're using a "modifier" button, make sure it's set as a "modifier" rather than a "switch" 5. Finally consider the possibility of a USB conflict, take out any unnecessary USB devices and start plugging things into different USB ports (especially if you have VR, USB conflicts are very common)

I think visual cues are likely more important than depth perception for estimating the size or distance of an object, so you're right there, but that's not the same as saying that convergence has no effect at all on perception of size. Try it. -
Well it's gotta be local but I don't think tacview has anything to do with it. My experience is, I just built a server on Win7 and local web control works fine. Set up a Win10 VPS and it doesn't work. In resource monitor I can see DCS.exe listening on port 8088 but the port is unavailable, and I haven't been able to figure out why. I have rules that open the port both ways (which I doubt matters) whitelisted DCS and even turned the firewall off and it's still fubar. I really hate windows. So, I guess the question is, whether netstat will tell me something resource monitor isn't, and if there's no conflict, how to open that port to localhost. I guess.

Only thing makes me nervous is the TMU count. Vegas aren't bad in DCS, about equal to a 1080. XT could be a step in the wrong direction (for DCS, dunno about everything else). Believe it when I see it basically.

Yeah that map is pretty much the bomb, that's what I'm using. Among other things a lot of templates are included. Adding, say a Hawk battery is literally two clicks. MOOSE is worth looking at. Setting up an air defense network with MOOSE is pretty much a five minute task using A2A_GCICAP if you want to keep it simple. Random Air Traffic literally takes about two minutes to set up, if that. You can make MOOSE complicated if you want, but you don't have to. Download moose.lua from the github (you want the one in moose_include), copy and paste about four lines of code, make sure the group names are right in both places (ie in ME and in the code) and you're pretty much done ETA Here I'll throw you a bone. I didn't imbed the scripts so you can see em in the mission editor. So, ya got the historically accurate PG map, dude that did this spent hours on Google Earth. I have the 71st TFS (F5), 91 and 92 TFS (F4), and 63 TFS (F14) flying CAP for ya and I put elements of the 82nd TFS (F14) scrambling out of Bandar Abbass if ya get too close. Random air traffic. Blue coalition is on its own. Cool map and it only took a few minutes to make. Just a few lines of code that were mostly cut and paste, I didn't imbed the scripts so you should be able to see what I did. There's an even easier way to do it, with less code but I had this already done for my project. MOOSE is pretty cool. Bone.miz

I don't see how software IPD is gonna do a thing for optics. See for example https://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-rift-s-supported-ipd-range-fov-quest-go/ You can see this using the IPD adjustment in DCS, it changes scale -- it can make you feel like a midget, or a giant -- but it doesn't make the image any clearer. Either you're looking through the sweet spot or you're not. That said, since I have strabismus, I'd rather have the z axis adjustment, I think. -
The trim button doesn't do what you think it does, and neither does the flap switch. Trim is all completely computerized, you just have to make sure the right program is running, and you select the program with the flaps switch. Set it to half for takeoff, and full for landing, auto otherwise, and don't try to psychoanalyze the jet. When you first start up the jet there will be a bunch of error codes on the FCS page, you have to clear those codes, reset the FCS and then set your takeoff trim. There are a couple of different ways to do that, I set flaps to half, hold the FCS BIT Switch and FCS RESET Button at the same time for two seconds (easiest to do this from the keyboard) and once the a/c is finished doing its thing I hit the takeoff trim button, but there are other ways to do it (see for example Mudspike guide https://www.mudspike.com/wp-content/uploads/guides/DCS%20FA-18C%20Hornet%20Guide.pdf) just make sure you do all those things and leave the flaps switch in the T/O position, nobody will nag you about taxiing with your flaps down Roll trim pretty much always works (since they fixed it) but pitch trim typically does nothing unless you're in the pattern with "flaps" "down," and then it lets you dial in an AOA basically. Which is really cool when you think about it. You'll find yourself thinking "cmon it can't be that simple" but it really is. Afterburner is complicated, in the real jet (apparently) there's a gate you have to lift over or push through to get into AB, and that's modeled in the software. Easiest way to get started is to go to settings - special - F18 and set "Afterburner detent" to "Always off" then it's just like every other jet in DCS. If you do that it'll be hard to tell if you're in AB or not, hit RCTRL-ENTER and that'll give you an overlay where you can see your throttle position There are things about the Hornet that will drive you bonkers but flying the thing is a piece of cake, just let it do the work for you. Believe me your workload will be plenty without having to fuss around with the trim button. Just follow the rules -- especially when landing

1. Pointing device. I would suggest gaming mouse or trackball ie one with programmable buttons and the more the merrier. Gotta have it to interact with cockpit. Worth spending some $ on this, it's critical. 2. Buttons you can do by feel. Here, going to the keyboard isn't always terrrible, easy to find the ESC key, SPACE, and the number pad by feel. Still helpful to have some buttons handy, I have six on my joystick base, warthog bases have plenty of switches you can find by feel. If that's not enough, an external button device will come in handy. I used a USB keypad for a while, it actually works pretty well. Various devices made for gamers are available. You can make a button box using arduino, helps if you have a buddy with a 3D printer (Hermit, you da man!) An MFD is buttons I suppose, you'll have to feel around for em.... unless.... I'm thinking video passthru! Yeah... that could work maybe?
