Depends on what you mean by eye candy. Anti-aliasing (PD, MSAA) doesn't seem to affect my CPU at all. Most of the other stuff affects both. Keep meaning to check my CPU render time when I spawn in at a busy airfield, suspect I'm CPU limited at that time. But vast majority of the time I'm GPU limited. Typical GPU render times are pegged at 22 while the CPU is about 8ms or so. So what would happen if I slapped a 2080ti in there with my 3.9ghz (burst) CPU? I could try keeping the settings low and shoot for 90fps but I doubt I would hit that very often with my CPU, not on a busy map. I could dial in some more shadows and trees and stuff, but not much. Especially if I start messing with vis range I'm sure my CPU will be pegged in no time. That said, I'm sure I could make any GPU gag with a high enough pixel count (physical or virtual) and enough MSAA. I think it follows then, if you need to drive more pixels, or want more MSAA, upgrade your GPU. If you want the other kinds of eye candy, you should probably get your CPU, mobo and RAM sorted first. If you want to do both... hang on to your wallet, and good luck!

https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-3000-zen-2-cpu-5-ghz-overclock-4-5-ghz-all-core-boost/ In particular: "~4.4GHz performs similar to a 5Ghz 9900k – in Cinebench" I have my eye on the Ryzen 5 3600X, bursts to 4.4 stock. And on top of everything else, B450 mobo's are going for cheap, MSI gaming plus mini-ITX is on sale at NewEgg for $100 (seems to be working for me so far although I couldn't overclock my 2600 worth a darn) Gonna have my cake and eat it too, yum. Not completely sold on AMD GPU's (although I'm willing to crown the Vega56 as the el cheapo king of DCS, reality is, it's what I had lying around) but AMD may be looking really good for DCS in the CPU/mobo department. At half the price.

Yeah the T16K series ain't bad. The stick has a lot of precision, I don't like the stiff spring very much and it desperately needs another hat switch. Once I got the throttle tuned up (lubed, set screw adjusted) I love it. Agree the "slap paddle" would be way better for rudder control than twist grip, which on the T16K supposedly wears out really fast. I don't know that either one is all that durable but I think I'd pick it over the logitech. Both are way better than they should be for the price. I don't know how people fly without pedals, only module I'd consider would be the F15 and even then cuz you can set the wind to 0. Wish you could do that in real life

I dunno man. I need someplace to run when the F18 starts driving me bonkers. I mean, don't you ever get tired of fiddling with that frickin radar? DCS accommodates different interests. Wanna focus on tactics, F15 or J11 rocks. Wanna fiddle with stuff? Kick Jester out of the RIO seat and knock yourself right on out. Want to do both? Several iconic options to choose from. The F15-C has a place in history but I don't know that it's a cultural icon in the class of the Flanker, the Phantom or even the Strike Eagle. And I'd love to see high-fidelity modules of each

One of my squadron mates, who is an engineer, is whipping up a button box. Watching him work on the thing got me wondering, what kind of adaptive equipment would make DCS more fun for differently-abled people? I work with wounded vets and have come to see how thinking outside the box has its benefits... For example, it's easy enough to work around rudders and toe brakes but not so easy to work around the keyboard and those little tiny HOTAS buttons, ya know? Like, consider a radical re-conceptualization of the throttle. Think about a BMW iDrive selector on a slider. Forward and back for throttle, twist and press for keystrokes. Something like that. I dunno. Curious what ideas people have.

Which matters. There are three potential layers of anti-aliasing,. In-game, in the HMD software layer, and in the driver. Those have to be carefully regulated otherwise your performance tanks. I think steam supersampling is giving people fits and it doesn't sound very intuitive to fix. It is possible to screw that up in oculus, but you have to really try.

All my prior experience with GPU's was in mining. We looked at the Vega64 as a dog, very prone to throttling, much easier to keep a 56 cool. We would undervolt and actually underclock the core, we were pushing the memclock. You got 90% of the performance with the 56, with better reliability and less money up front. With water cooling, and knowing the memclock doesn't do squat for DCS, for the same money I might lean toward the 64 to get a couple more TMU's. I tended to hate cheap GPU's but powercolor did OK with mining, my MSI seems to be doing OK with DCS to my astonishment. Maybe they are all reference cards, I dunno. Like I said, I'm not sure I'd sink a lot of money into it, and I think you're right on it, gotta keep that little pig cool, that's the key to the whole thing.

I gotta think that's a lot of it. I imagine running two 4K monitors would probably stress DCS. I'm getting the feeling DCS is still CPU limited, even in VR; just depends on what's going on in the map. In the short run, I'm eager to see what gen3 Ryzen has in store for us (soon!). In the long term... heck, what's the long term in the computer world? Six months? Who knows. Got my eye on xtal. So to speak.

Stuttering as you describe is probably low framerate/dropped frames. Tends to be most obvious in rotation, eg turning your head or just watching the world fly by the window. I'd suggest getting oculus tray tool, turn the HUD on to application render time, see what your CPU and GPU render times are. My prediction is that your CPU render times are OK (if not, we can fix it). More likely your GPU render times are north of 24ms cuz I kinda doubt that GPU has the oomph you're looking for. To be clear, those two times are linked. For example if you're flying over the city, both will go up. You can mitigate that a bit by lowering your visible range, that'll bring both down. (And maybe you should, for now. Trees and shadows have similar effects.) But, I expect you'll be wanting a new GPU before it's all over with. I agree with you on the RAM, the game is playable with 16 and going to 32 is not likely to solve your problem I don't think. Marshall your resources!

Haha wow beautiful landing Steinsch. One thing I think deserves emphasis is how stable you are on final, just rock solid all the way in. Players should strive for that I think, rather than jinking around looking for the runway. Do you use VR? Significantly increases ability to perceive sink rate, was for me anyway

Thanks for the replies. Pilot was wondering if we needed to keep the bandits right on the nose to get a launch order but that doesn't seem the case. Honestly I'm leaning toward a controller glitch, suspect that's what's driving the radar to the gimbal limits. Not sure there's anything the pilot or radar is doing that could explain that behavior. I've been using a PS4 controller which is pretty handy but probably not 100% dcs compatible Next question 3. So, I take it, TWS-Auto isn't doing much of anything right now? I can assign launch order and launch out of TWS-man? 4. But once TWS-auto is implemented, I should be able to get my radar adjusted in TWS-man, then snick it into TWS-auto and it'll keep em in view best it can, right?

Free download, give it a whirl. Vis range medium, trees 62, PD 1.2, civ traffic and smoke off, texture high, cockpit resolution 1024. Msaa off, aniso 16x. Prepare to be blown away. Only so much you can do with a rift, 1080 is plenty

Watching satal podcasts really helped my bvr, hoping the hornet tournament will be equally illuminating. Following a skilled player around in f2 or f4 view, or in the Rio seat is a learning opportunity. Tacview everything and watch it with an analytical eye.

AMD has taken the fun out of it, undervolting is a one-click operation in crimson. unclear that overclocking does much, i'd try it first before investing in the water cooling. The reason why the vega56 is the el cheapo king is because it's... well, cheap...

Little help! Trying to learn RIO seat. First couple of questions has to do with firing from a stable platform, I feel like the pilot is jinking around too much when I'm trying to sort targets, he thinks I can't operate the radar. Which, I can't, so he's technically right, but I'm gonna ask anyway. 1. Having trouble maintaining TWS during maneuvers. Antenna stabilization is "in" meaning I have it set to be stable to the horizon. I'm in TWS manual, sorting targets within 100 miles. Pilot maneuvers and all my contacts drop off. Radar elevation appears to be pegged at the lower end of the range, I have to scroll it back up to near zero elevation then I can re-acquire the targets. Is it the radar, or my controller maybe? 2. Even when I have targets sorted, all lined up with launch numbers, I noticed if they drift too far off the nose, say to 2 or 10 oclock, I can still see them on radar but they lose their launch priority numbers. Do we need to keep nose on the target to launch?

Good job. I'd look at the pixel density, it's kind of a "U" shaped curve. As you increase it up to a point it looks good, after that point it gets hard to spot things and text gets blurry. PD is brutally expensive in terms of the load on your GPU, dial that back a little and you can get your trees back maybe. Also you should be able to set water and anisotrophic filering to high, those are almost free

To follow up on the texture mapping unit thing, I surveyed my team yesterday. We are all either on Rift or Rift S. 1060 (80 TMU): player is dissatisfied but he is competitive, plans to upgrade soon 1070ti (152 TMU): player is satisfied and very competitive Most of our players are on 1080's (160 TMU) and I find myself using basically the same settings, getting the same performance with my Vega 56 (224 TMU). We can run high terrain texture, cockpit res 1040, medium shadows (depending on the server), med vis range, and either MSAAx2 or PD 1.2. For comparison, I would submit the two best cards for DCS are probably the 1080ti (224) and the 2080ti (272). There's a marginal improvement here, you should be able to run MSAA and PD 1.2-ish at the same time, which I personally feel looks great. Wish I could do it, not sure I want to spend the $$$$ tho. People are eager to see how the Radeon VII with its 240 TMU's fares in DCS (we will see if the theory holds). Benchmarks in other games don't quite equal DCS. I think there are some bargains out there, personally I'd drop $300 on a Vega or a 1080 before I'd spend $800 on a 2080. But also some false economies, the 1060 might be one. And remember the action is always at the margins. Which I take it is the main gripe about the 2080ti, in DCS at least you get a marginal improvement over the 1080ti, at a really high cost. None of this applies to HMD's with higher pixel counts than the Oculus, I imagine that's a whole nuther ball game

There's a theory that dcs wants as many texture mapping units as you can throw at it. Consider a Vegas 56 if you want to go cheap. Or a 1080. Doesn't sound very glamorous but upgrading to a b450 Mobo with decent ram helped me a lot. I'll probably gen one of the new ryzen CPUs when they come out. Only so much you can do with Oculus. Don't spend a fortune on your GPU, just get one that'll work in dcs

Among graphics settings, anti-aliasing affects GPU. Trees, shadows and vis range affect CPU and GPU about equally.

Wonder if we could talk virpil into a group buy. Like if 20 of us got together and ordered gear if they would do a production run for us without having to go through all the drama. I mean, who else is buying this gear? They have something all sellers wish they had; Virpil knows exactly where we are. Here!

If you do that, does the idle detent work? Meaning, does popping it over the detent start the engine?
-
make sure you're not cpu limited, turn shadows off and set vis range medium, get your CPU render time down to 7 or 8 if you can. If so your FPS should climb into the 50's or 60's if you climb out or go out over the water. Oculus tray tool allows you to turn ASW on or off on the fly, sometimes you have to toggle it back and forth to get it to "take"

Not a lot of people are flying a 980ti in VR so it may be hard to benchmark. On paper it should work. Try the following settings: Textures high Terrain textures low PD=1.2 MSAA off Shadows off Vis range med Trees 60% Civ traffic, grass, clutter, smoke off Monitor resolution only affects your monitor, and doesn't affect VR performance. Set this, and everything else, as desired. As for crashing in MP, think about memory problems. Update your MOBO bios, check your memory timings. Think about buying an SSD and migrate DCS to that to reduce your load times. If all else fails there's a setting in regedit that you can use to increase the timeout value but I'll leave that for somebody who knows what they are doing (I did it, and it worked, but can't find the reference now)

Partially I think it's that there are more people wanting to fly NATO aircraft. Part of it seems to be the perception that the AAMRAM is such a deadly missile and the game needs balance. It is, if you're not paying attention. Seems to have driven redfor fighters into the mountains. Not the only way to counter the F15 but probably the easiest way. I don't know that the AIM54 has balanced things though, it's hard to cope with even if you are paying attention. Now the Eagles are being driven into the mountains. Or to Discord, to find a wingman. Speaking of which, a lot of this I think is an artifact of how people play. Many just jump in a jet and go hunting. There are other ways to play the game. I'd be interested to see a Redfor Carrier Challenge server, have red force defend a ground target against a strike package of F14's and F18's. Let each team bring their best missiles. If Redfor has an effective SAM commander, good GCI, and pilots well trained in section tactics, I think we would have a really interesting fight. Especially if Bluefor comes charging in like it's a team deathmatch. That said, Powell doctrine says, never pick a fair fight. Nothing wrong with PVE if you're interested in leveraging overwhelming force, which is a legit and realistic military strategy. AI is goofy sometimes but it does a fair rendition of a poorly-trained pilot most of the time.
