With cat 9.3 i've just measured about 10% FPS increase over cat 8.12 in DCS:BS.

Interesting article about E-E conflict in late '90s
Maximus_G replied to RvETito's topic in Military and Aviation
Alright. I guess you understand that this would happen only when the missile range is bigger than the radar lock range. Because if the radar locks its target before missile is in Дрмакс, there is no difference in the moment of missile launch. Let's turn to the source. During flights there appeared the real meaning of "E" letter of R-27R(T)E, based on LA distances. It turned to be "Export", not "Energetic", as they've been thinking. In reality it almost equalized chances of Su-27 and MiG-29 in BVR fight. The advantage of Su-27 in allowable time of launch of missiles like R-27 from Su-27 and MiG-29 during mutual head-on attack was around 1-2 seconds, instead of presumed 5-7 seconds. "Допустимое время пуска" cannot be understood precisely even in Russian, because it's semantically incorrect. You can presume that he's talking about period of illumination time, or he's talking about the moment when "LA" appears, i.e. the range. And we can see that he is talking about missiles and their range! Saying that "E" missile didn't provide a significantly longer Дрмакс range. That's what they had discovered during flights. That's why they found no advantage. Now if we open the manuals for the Su and Mig, we will see that both of them have the same amount of time when radar illuminates the target after launch. It's 60 seconds. Regardless missile type, whether it is R-27R or ER. If we dig more, we will see that "export" part in the missile name is not the "E", it's "1". R-27R1, R-27ER1. While "E" means larger motor. The man looks like he's a professional maintenance technician, but not in what concerns weapons systems, and he's even farther from their tactical usage. Lemme argue again by reading another part of text. On the next day the foe decided to catch up the Su-27 flying CAP, and when this CAP was almost over, they sent a MiG-29 in the direction of Ethiopian capital. Ground station found the target at a big altitude and started guiding Su-27, tail number 58. It was happening almost like in training until last minute, when ground station found another MiG-29 flying low. It suddenly began targeting Su-27. To Sukhoi's pilot's honor, despite warning from the ground and later the Beryoza warble, signaling of his plane's lock by the enemy an presumable launch on him, he managed to aim and fire 2 R-27T in a very short period of time, and they hit the target. Eritrean pilot Yonas died. Second enemy plane saw his wingman's pieces falling, urgently bugged out and returned to his airbase. Because of low fuel, Su-27 had to return too. After landing he had about 200 kg of fuel, less than half of allowed remaining amount. Thorough evaluation of this fight showed that Su-27 pilot wasn't shot down only because he fully applied the Su-27 advantage, having somewhat bigger allowed launch distance (these 2 seconds!!!) and in this case the higher flying speed. Do i have to write that R-27T is a fire-and-forget missile, it does not use radiocorrection. The radar can be used here only to point the missile in the target direction, and LA appears when missile seeker locks onto the target. Now think, what kind of "Su-27 advantage" and "2 seconds" he is talking about. You see? Making such conclusions is not a strong part of him, given all the credits to his knowledge of ground servicing, his evidence of those events, and our recognition to his writing of this article. For the dessert, think how could it happen - 1 plane uses R-27(E)T, while its opponents for some reason don't use R-27R in advance. Let me remind you that, for MiG, pessimistic target lock range of a 3 sq.m target, head-on aspect, is 40 km, by the manual. While detection range is 50-70. That's why i decided to stress it out. When the author talks about both sides, he is speculating, because he obviously doesn't know the details from the other side. Judge the sources thoroughly. This information is TOTALLY new and quite detailed. The other sources of several years old were talking a very different thing, like almost 100% R-27 misses, and all kills made by R-73. -
I just would like to point it out, i meant a plane based on An-70 could even be produced by EU. Of course it wouldn't be a simple or quick deal, but still i guess the project could be converted to EADS production technology. Design could be bought, not the plane itself. There could be compromise schemes too, like 1st batch Ukranian production for the countries that cannot wait for too long. But surely that's just a speculation, and it's now quite late to think of it as an option.
-
Agree. But still we could imagine some An-70EU project, converted to European standards and EADS production. That could be an interesting way to give EU countries what they want and give life to An-70... It just would need more time to redesign the plane.

Interesting article about E-E conflict in late '90s
Maximus_G replied to RvETito's topic in Military and Aviation
First of all, the author doesn't really know what the situation was there on the Eritrean side. They could have problems with using their R-27 missiles or even have none of them at all. Some sources (undisclosed yet) appear to confirm that assumption. Has anybody seen them hanging on Eritrean MiGs in that period of time? Second, "due to the longer target illumination time limit". I find that explanation strange at least. -
Yep, the manual doesn't say whether RH-missiles can be used if the radar doesn't get the lock. Maybe it's there in the other parts of the document, that are not available. I've checked the MiG-29 manual, and what is says: 4.1.1. Shlem ... If the R-27R1 missiles are selected, then target designation in "Shlem" mode is provided to the radar, and after the target is locked by the radar, further aiming has to be performed according to information on the HUD. Target lock by the radar or EOS is indicated by blinking rings oт the helmet-mounted display. And again, radar finds the target by EOS or helmet designating, and the standard usage of R-27R requires the radar lock. Still there's an option for the case when radar is normally slaved to EOS and just keeps pinging the space in the provided direction, while being not able to keep tracking the target on its own.
-
It depends on circumstances. Sometimes the fleet is grounded, sometimes it's not. In Russia too.
-
Example, Su-7SK manual, paragraph 5.1.6.III: In SHLEM mode, radar is in master mode when there is target lock, IZL is on and LD is off; and also when the RH-type missiles are selected regardless LD position. 5.1.2: Radar modes: ... KVO (quasi-view mode) is used when radar works in slave mode. In this mode, when OLS picks a target and IZL is on, radar continuously measures the distance to the target, turning transmitter on for a short period of time each 5 seconds. When the distance drops below 15 km or when VVOD on the trottle is pressed at greater ranges, radar automatically locks on the target and changes its mode from KVO to RNP. ... RNP (continuous direction finding) mode is used for obtaining target coordinates with precision needed to allow guided missile launch; volume scan is discontinued. ... DNP (discrete-continuous illumination) is used for target tracking and illumination, and RH-type missile datalinking. RNP is used to prepare the missile launch, and when it's fired, radar switches to DNP. IZL is the switch which turns on the radar antenna transmitter. LD is the switch which turns on the laser rangefinder. As you can see, basically, when radar is on, it allows R-27R(ER) firing, even if the EOS is on too, and it doesn't matter what device has picked the target first. Radar and EOS logic is different in LO, but still the situation is the same there.

No FPS break-down with AA?
Maximus_G replied to Heiliger Bimbam's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The AA is not working in your case. I'd put a dollar on it... because i have a 4850, and AA doesn't work for me either (in DCS)! :D If you want to check it - start a mission which begins with a static scene (in cockpit on the ground for example) - and make a screenshot. Then exit the game, make changes in CCC and make another screenshot. Compare both and draw a conclusion :) -
Radar and EOS work independently or in the "master-slave" mode. If EOS detects a target, it provides angular data to the radar. R-27R(ER) can be fired when the radar locks onto it. Details are in the good old Su-27SK manual.

I got jet fighters flying over my head several times a week. Trying to represent a situation when it can be heard, you have to consider its speed, altitude and throttle position. Terrain (mountainous for example) can be an issue too in some circumstances. I can say that a Su-27 going roughly 500 km/h, altitude ~600m, lo-mid throttle, cannot be heard when it's coming in your direction. You hear the sound only when it's bypassing overhead already.

So, not a single Indian fighter can fire RVV-AE beyond the missile radar's detection range? Any prooflinks? -

Maximus_G replied to EvilBivol-1's topic in Military and Aviation
 Are you joking? Where did you find that RVV-AE is "data-link-less"? And also, does the R-27 have datalink? It depends mainly on its foreign customers... and the same rule fully applies to the Silent Eagle. -
Project New Su-27 by 3GO WorkGroup
Maximus_G replied to SkieRider's topic in 3D Modeling for DCS World
Please understand - this is NOT normal. It's a specific case of improper maintenance and wear-and-tear. You could make a specific skin of a Su-27 in worn-out state. But you shouldn't consider all (or even most) of the Su-27S to have such a canopy. The planes on these pics are the same Su-27S and UB manufactured back in the 80's. -
Project New Su-27 by 3GO WorkGroup
Maximus_G replied to SkieRider's topic in 3D Modeling for DCS World
The work is simply great, we've got a detailed model at last... thank you guys! And i have a notice. The yellow plex color of the front canopy is the symptom of improper maintenance. You will never see it on a Su-27 which is treated properly. So, it should NOT be there. The example of proper handling is attached. That's how the canopy stays normal even if the plane hasn't been overhauled for a loong time. -

Maximus_G replied to Aviafan's topic in DCS: Ka-50
