That web map is amazing, great to look at when I'm supposed to be working. One quick thought... is it possible to add the Waypoint to the JTAC radio output? Then A2G guys could use that for missions rather than typing -intel -
Mine arrived today. Very happy. The setup worked perfectly after already having the CV1 working on the system. The increase in res is perfect for me, everything is readable and crisp. So much easier to spot ground targets now! Very happy. Didn't see a huge difference with tryingt to spot the ball on the carrier, though only tried a quick test. I was actually quite happy with the CV1, but it was like just not quite good enough. The Rift S really is the next step. The quality doesn't seem as good construction wise, and the head tracking seems.. different in some way. Maybe I'm just used to it. Very pleased overall, glad I waited for the bugs to be sorted. I haven't tweaked settings yet but the performance feels better than the CV1, even with the increased resolution.

I've just ordered mine, can't wait! Have had the money sitting there for ages but was waiting for the white flashes to be resolved. Also had a personal task/goal I've been putting of doing for years so I forced myself to get that acheived - then reward myself with a new headset.

Best accessories and tools to enhance immersion?
Savvy replied to _outcast_'s topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
1. Hotas 2. VR (if you want immersion then this will get you 90% there) 3. Home cockpit. Having the main switches/mfds in place is awesome as is feeling an actual 'frame' around your body. Taxiing while resting your arms on the top edges of the cockpit is awesome. 4. Buttkicker, or home made tactile transducers if you're cheap like me -
I have my virtual finger poised on the buy-now. As soon as they fixed that white flashing problem - count me in. I know it's not a huge issue, and it wouldn't bother me *too* much. But there's a small chance it's a hardware problem which can't be fixed without replacing the headset which would likely cost me the return shipping. I check the oculus forums daily for updates, looks like they're all getting a bit annoyed with the time its taking to fix the problem.

I thought the VR hotas idea worked really well in another game that was built from the ground up for VR controllers. However personally I'd have no use for it in DCS and don't see how it would work. There are many many functions on the hotas stick itself with coolie hats, DMS, Trim etc etc which couldn't be replicated in VR. Having to use keyboard for these extra functions would surely kill immersion even more. Aside from that, I just can't see how anyone would be able to perform fine functions like refuel with VR controlelrs. I don't think you'd have the control required over the fine movements, not to mention having to hold your arm up in the air for extended periods. Look at the current method of flipping switches in VR. You basically point at the switch and flick your finger? To go the other way you have to turn your hand upside down and do the same thing like you're trying to tickle it. Can't see how that is remotely immersive and to me seems a bit of a fun gimmick that allows them to tick the feature box of 'yes you can use hand controllers' Considering the complexity of these systems, the age of the code, the speed in which new tech comes around and the small niche of the market they have to work with - I'd say ED are doing a really quite remarkable job to be where they are now.

Thanks Jar, great video as usual. I'm still 50/50 in deciding if I want to upgrade from CV1 to Rift S. Some people say it's the best upgrade ever but the others are close to sending it back and just sticking with the CV1. I bet there's a lot of people like myself that are sitting on the fence waiting to see if they can fix the issues (like the white flash) with a software/firmware upgrade. With the number of returns they have I'd also be concerned about buying one and getting somebody elses reject.

Maybe try putting the CV1 back on before you send the S back :)

In your opinion is the Rift S a worth while upgrade from the CV1? Any troubles/concerns getting it to NZ? I'm really happy with my CV1, if the cockpit was a bit more readable it would be great. Am a little worried about the hardware and getting stuck with a lemon though.

Hi Don, Do you know if Oculus have stated if the white flashes issue is due to hardware or software? I watched a youtube review that mentioned the issue was due to a faulty cable which is a bit of a worry, but wondered if it could be oculus just buying for time. The white flashing issue is about the only thing holding me off from buying it. Especially if it's a hardware issue as you can be sure any unit I purchase would have the defect, and being from NZ it would be almost impossible to return.

I wouldn't get a CV1 now, especially a used one, unless you can try it first and it's really really cheap. The best bet would be to wait for the Index and others to come out get settled, then see what works best. I have a feeling that the Rift S will still be near the top overall for DCS once the dust settles. I have the CV1 and for me it's soooooo close to being really good. The small increase in resolution with the Rift S sounds perfect to me. The Valve Index sounds great but it's more than twice the price for me, and would really need a top level gaming PC to work with DCS.

I made mine by cutting up an old foam matress topper to the correct shape. Then I cut up an old green army tarp to cover the top and fold underneath - then used grommits and elastic to hold it all tight from the bottom. It's all a work-in-progress and a little crinkled now the cat likes to sleep on it, but seems to work quite well.

Yeah and we'd likely get pinged for GST to get it in the country. One good thing about the RiftS version is that it includes shipping and taxes. I'm still on the fence though.
-
Great to hear it's working better now. If your new Rift S doesn't have the issue then that would indicate a hardware issue with some units. This really puts me off as being from outside the US it's basically impossible for me to return if I have issues. Certainly watching this thread with interest.

Have to disagree with the cockpit statement. Flying VR in a cockpit is far better than without. When you reach out and actually touch the things in the cockpit it really adds to the realism, or you grab the ACM handles on the cockpit frame to check your six. And you just can't beat opening the canopy and resting you're arms on the cockpit frame as you taxi back after a mission. One of the best moments was actually in War Thunder flying the Swordfish in a torpedo attack. I had bass shakers all setup so you could feel the rumble of the engine and the flak exploding near by. For a laugh I placed a large fan in front of the pit, so you'd lean out to look over the side of the open cockpit and get blasted in the face by wind :) It would look really dorky but was always fun when somebody would poke fun at it, then have a go and be totally blown away. Oop sorry, that went a bit off topic.

I run a 1070ti on the CV1 version of the Rift. It runs fine. Obviously you'll get a bit of slowdown if you try to max the graphics but it's seems fine with medium-high settings. From what I've read, the Valve Index will be considerably better than the Rift-S. However with the higher resolution you'll likely need a 2080 GPU and fairly new system to use it. If you've got a 1080 or less, and just want to be able to read the gauges then it sounds like a Rift-S will be the way to go. I currently have a Rift CV1, 1070ti and a 3-4 year i5 PC - so I'm going to wait until the Index comes out to see how it goes. Will either buy the Rift-S for my current setup, or get the Index along with a new gaming PC. The price might be the biggest issue. Here in NZ a decent PC would start at $3,500 NZD and the Index looks like it will cost around $1670 NZD(with shipping). The Rift-S on the other hand would be 2.5 times less than the Index.

As I understand it, this is a bug with the DCS system. You must start the mission taking off from the Stennis Carrier, then try the landing. It should work fine when you take off from the Stennis first.
