Personally I don't think overclocking will help much, that cpu should be ok. I would download Win7 RC but make sure you get the x64 version as this game loves ram. Yes TIR4 works and so does DCS Max, not sure about the Cougar but I can't see why it wouldn't, I'm using an MS FFB2 with no issue. Get some more ram, the game will love you for it. Beware that the RC of Win7 only lasts for around 12 months and then it will start turning off at 2 hour intervals so you WILL need to buy a retail copy of it inside a year if you want to run it.

Can your PC run BS with no related issues?
AussieFX replied to Air-Force-1's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
No problems on mine. I just updated to 8gb ram and it makes a huge difference. It loads in a flash now, this game loves ram it seems. The more the better. -
I finally have this MS FFB2 sussed. What it was that stopped the hat working properly was the default Blackshark setting it has the hat configured to views and then slew shkval with the combination of RAlt. I was trying to slew the shkval with just up/down/left/right but because those commands were already taken I was getting the inconsistencies. Once I deleted the views (I have TIR4) it has worked as it should. At least my FFB2 is ok. I love this stick. Why they ever stopped making it is beyond me, it's the only decent thing to have come out of Microsoft. (j/k)

I'm using Windows 7 x64 RC which is probably at the heart of the problem. It seems the joystick itself is working perfectly. I might try downloading the FSX demo and see how the hat works there.
-
Just changing the topic. I thought my hat switch wasn't working properly as it won't go left, either to slew the shkval or for views. I have checked the stick out in game controller properties and it reports the left hat switch as working as do all the 8 switches on the hat. I have tried coupling the shkval slew right to the left hat switch and it works perfectly but as soon as I return to slew left it fails. Then I tried the slew left command on the right hat switch and surprise, it didn't work. I'm thinking this might be a bug in the game and the MS FFB2. Are there any other FFB2 users out there that can correlate this error with me?

I would look at an ATI 4870 or 4890. Best performance/dollar.

I'm currently using a microsoft FFB2. The Logitech FFB unit I'm waiting on is the upcoming FFB HOTAS and pedals, due in September. The reason I need a throttle is that the shkval slew won't map properly to my hat, so basically I need a new hat and the best way I can think of is to use the X-52 in conjunction with the FFB2. Trying to hold a stable hover while looking for slew keys on the keyboard is not fun. By the time I have slewed the shkval to a target it has moved. EDIT: The Logitech I want to wait for is the G940. I realise their previous efforts at FFB joysticks have been rubbish. I have some faith in them though as the G25 steering wheel is a peach.
-
Good to know, thanks. I was also wondering if there might be a conflict having 2 joysticks. Obviously not. I think I will get the X-52 then and use the throttle with a view to getting the Logitech FFB unit when it arrives.
-
OK so that means I'm good to go if I only want the throttle? Sorry about all the questions, I would just drop into a shop and have a look if I could. Unfortunately I live hundreds of miles from the nearest capital city.
-
One question about the X-52. With the throttle, it needs it's own separate cable so what type of connector is on the end of it? I'm thinking that I really only need the throttle as the only problem with my ms FFB2 is the flaky hat switch, apart from that I'm more than happy with it. So if the throttle on the X-52 has a usb connector then I'm laughing, if it has a proprierty connector then I'm back at square one. I want to hold off until September to see what the Logitech system brings so spending $700+ on CH products (Joystick+throttle+pedals) wouldn't make sense until I have seen the Logitech gear. $300 however wouldn't bother me for an interim solution.

It's in Australia though. Easier and much cheaper shipping.

Wow that logitech looks nice and has grabbed my attention. I have their G25 driving wheel and it works really well. The only downside is I had an old logitech FFB and it was junk, it only lasted a few months. I like FFB sticks though and might have to wait for this, but not having a hat switch atm is killing me...Literally. :megalol:

So the X-52 doesn't have a twist rudder? Thanks for the opinions, setups too. EDIT: Here is the shop I'm looking at buying from, there are 2 pages of different controllers. http://www.flightsimstore.com.au/index.php?cPath=30_35&sort=3a&page=2&osCsid=tb5ke6cp0sn799aoacgbk4ciu3 I probably should add that money isn't really an issue although I don't want to pay for something I don't need (like fancy LED's) I just want something that works properly first time around.

Those expensive i7 systems don't seem to be bringing much more performance to the game. My AMD processor at 3.2ghz is matching you guys. I get 70 max and a low of 40 fps. @1920x1200, 4X AA and 16 AF. Distance is Max and water at medium all other settings are max and mirrors on. I'm finding extra ram helps too, next time I'm near a pc shop I will pick up another stick so I can run 8gb.
-
Which Harveys? I'm just north of you, I'm in Dalwallinu. :) Back to controllers, the pro version doesn't seem to bring much for the extra cash.

Hi. I currently use a Microsoft sidewinder 2 joystick but alas the hat swich isn't working properly and I really need it to slew the shkval. Unfortunately it's useless as is so I need a new controller. :joystick: That brings me to the question of what to get. Most here seem to like the Saitek X-52. My other option would be a Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar F-16. I have 2 problems, do I get the Saitek or the Thrustmaster? If I get the Saitek X52 do I get the "standard" version or the pro? The pro is $150 extra for what seems like some pretty LED's. Thoughts on my best option? Thanks. Prices in $AUD Thrustmaster = $334.99 Saitek X52 = $193.45 Saitek X52 pro = $339.95

Does the game itself support multi gpu? I have crossfired 4870's and I usually disable them for this game. I remember Crysis needed a patch before multi gpu's were working correctly. It would be nice to see it implemented, I'm getting 70fps with a single card in training but when the action starts I think it might slowdown somewhat.

I'm running mine on W7. I bought a new cpu, ram and motherboard the other day so I took the time to change W7 from the Beta (build 7077) to the RC (build 7100). The Beta I had seemed to have some major flaws (both versions are x64) the Beta (7077) would only recognise 3gb of ram even though 4gb was installed and W7 was taking around 5 minutes to load from scratch, this was with a Phenom II 940 4gb DDR2-1066 ram so there certainly were problems. My new kit is a Phenom 955 and 6gb of DDR3-1600 all the ram is now recognised and it has made a huge difference. Whenever I load the game or a mission now it appears almost instantly, where before I could go and make a coffee while i was waiting for it to load. So my recommendation is to grab as much ram as you can, it has given me the best performance kick, it's like a new game now. The only gripes I have with the game is a lack of multicore support and also a lack of multi gpu support. I have 2x HD4870's and I disable crossfire before I play. We are in the multicore era now and it's time to catch on. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in a future patch. I'm not complaining here just making suggestions of what I would like to see in the future.

This Russian system appears to be a little different to "western" systems. The KA-50 doesn't run the engines at a constant n1 speed as western systems do, I have found that engine speeds can fluctuate anywhere between 85-100% in the KA-50 in auto mode. In western systems the PCL's are pushed to flight idle which then gives the engines 100% rpm or n1 and power output is then controlled by torque which is fundamentally a factor of rotor pitch and torque is the limiting factor for power requirements. I haven't seen a torque gauge in the KA-50 so there are some major differences between the 2 implementations.
-
That's pretty much it, the rotor tips are weighted therefore the individual blades can be balanced. If you damage a blade they are usually replaced in matched sets.

DCS: How to gain performance on Windows Vista (Windows 7)
AussieFX replied to eV1Te's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I'm trying to download Jesse's tool and I get a forbidden error. Any ideas on why I can't get in? -
Do Microsoft still make them? I haven't seen a new one for years. I have the original FF1 gameport stick that didn't take long to become redundant and I'm holding on to my FF2 as if my life depended on it. Good joysticks are hard to find these days.

Triple Monitor with Softh
AussieFX replied to S77th-RYKE's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
FWIW I know ATI was looking at an external box that connected to the pc/laptop. (via usb?) The box basically was a carrier for the videocard and had I/O. There might be something on google as it wasn't long ago I read about this, the box had a 4870 inside. It has nothing to do with multi monitors, from what I could work out it was just a way of upgrading video in a laptop easily. Not a bad idea if you ask me. I wish I could remember the name of it. -
I would love it....If only I knew how to change skins. I'm not much of a fan of the default look.
