  1. In fact this shows why ARMs are poor anti-air weapons. The F-4 locked onto the tail-gun radar of the B-52, and launched a HARM at it. The HARM caused some damage but did not impact the B-52, otherwise the story would have ended quite a bit differently. This was a 2nm shot against a large, non-maneuvering target.
  2. I wonder if this is the result of their IR signature being smaller, the launch occurring while they're in AB and them cutting out AB right after launch or something.
  3. I don't think there's anything new available in public, but you could read about how the much older sparrow does it. And no, 'lost gates' are not MADDOG. The system still has some prior knowledge and how 'open' it throws the gates is unknown.
  4. Yes it is, and because lots of things can invalidate the parameters, including your target not being there. You should always clear the area before you shoot. This is the pilot's job and that's all there is to this. MADDOG is a launch without data. That's all there is to it.
  5. So what? How far were they? It's not like the Mirage 2000 radar is some big powerful setup either. The MiG-21 was measured to have a 10m^2 RCS. But, that's neither here nor there. The RCS in DCS are mostly fiction and they can't be changed too much from the standard 5m^2 because, if I recall correctly, this significantly affects chaff function. This isn't incorrect, the scale on which it happens is though.

  7. You know this just by the presence of the platform, so nothing new.

It should, especially given that the seeker operates in the X-Band (unlike AMRAAM, for which you may need hardware upgrades because it operates on much higher frequency) Detecting the datalink is irrelevant in this case. It's a signal embedded inside all the other radar signals and doesn't tell you anything other than 'this radar is in search but is also transmitting data'. It matters more if that radar is in STT. There is the possibility of warning when the radar is in TWS but that's very dependent on things like the known TWS update rate and volume vs. other search modes. Given that the F-14 can cover huge amounts of volume with its radar, there's no point in warning anyone that data is being transmitted ... Phoenix in flight will be assumed.

  10. @BIGNEWYPlease look at the chart above. The acceleration discrepancy is quite significant for this aircraft. It's too slow in acceleration up to about M1.65 and too fast after. For example, to reach M1.5 you should take about 190 sec but it takes 220. 30 seconds is a very large deviation; this trend is similar from M1.1 (from 0.8 to 1.1 there is a deviation also, but much smaller) up to M1.5-1.6 or so. @Exorcet does the clean acceleration match?
  11. AFAIK each missile has a single drag value for FC3. Where you put it does not matter. I would say that 2 and 3 are the real issues then, good work on doing those tests. Do you have some data to post?

  13. If you mean stores drag, I would be going off of memory. There are no charts for AMRAAM payload but it should be very similar to the 4+4 config, certainly within a few seconds I imagine. The 4+4 config has been verified against acceleration charts. I won't have time to re-check so if someone would like to try doing so it would be great. The F-16 has a very powerful engine and if it's slick I would expect it to have pretty spiffy acceleration. The thing about the F-16 is that it's going to be optimized for a narrower speed band whereas the eagle's intakes optimize engine airflow for a much larger range. Maybe this is all correct or maybe it's the F-16 that's being too good, who knows?
  14. IRL you would spot the smoke also but in DCS you don't need it, as long as you have a pod. Sometimes even without that. That's all because the little 3d object that is the MANPADs stands out and has no real means to hide. They also don't move away from the smoke once they shoot.
  15. You heard wrong. You shoot into a furball only if your wingman is likely to die anyway. Checking that the missile's path is clear of friendly is standard procedure.
  16. IRL they will hide in woods, buildings, vehicles or anywhere they might need to, and pop out to take their shot. IRL it's also so much harder to spot them and pick them off unlike what happens in DCS where people go MANPADS hunting.

  19. Doppler, range and angle gates. If it doesn't find a contact that matches those, it throws those gates open and then the real fun begins.

  22. FTFY. Don't care about what wiki says, usually their details are weak and deserving of further investigation. The J-11A was built in limited numbers and production was stopped in favor of the much updated J-11B. By the time the PL-12 was successfully test-fired, J-11A production had been halted. So, whatever J-11A version we have in-game, it's before PL-12 integration (assuming it was ever integrated into the A at all).

  24. There's no need to model them, you model the sun as a source of reduced SNR or complete distraction if it's within a certain angle of the seeker. LOS.
  25. ^^^^ If you can reproduce this in a short track ED would be able to tell you what happened. It may well be a bug.
