Yeah I agree it is most certainley heart pounding stuff, I love missions like that, where you just get pounced on out of no-where. I find with most missions, just not flicking through the aircraft in the F2 view helps add some atmosphere, I used to do that to start with to look at the 3D models, I now know what they look like so ive stopped doing that and increased the realism a notch. Flying the A10 makes me feel so in-secure when there are hostile fighters around, the only thing to do is hug the ground and mask yourself, and take the shot if and only if the oppourtunity arises or if your completley stuffed up the kybosh!! Thanks for reading that James!!

Ok im sure there are a few of you out there who are pretty skilled at knocking down aircraft with the A10 when needed, but from all the time ive been flying I have never needed too perform any A-A manuevers in the A10, last night my first A10 A-A kills can be chalked up, which im very proud of, might sound silly to a few of you, but I couldnt help but say anything. For those of you who are interested I have included a report of the action below: Campaign : Hawgs Life Mission : The Big Valley On returning from a succesfull attack against a convoy deep in a valley, myself and wingman spread formation over the coast heading for our final steerpoints into landing. All gauges checked out ok, looking good for a safe return.... RWR punched out a warning, I confirmed the radar was from SU-34's.... bombers, not much of a threat, but are capable of carrying R-73's.... seconds later my wingman yelled a missile launch, looking over my right should I saw him break only to be slammed by an R-73, sending the doomed A10 into an un-controllable flip. My first reaction was to switch to AA mode and dump flares like a firework, jinking all the way..... the offending SU-34 whooshed over the canopy... in an instant I pulled up the nose allowing the AIM-9's to lock... "missile away". The two sidewinders slammed into the SU-34 causing it to spiral... the pilots ejected and the stricken aircraft slammed into the sea. I began looking for the second SU-34 a quick glance towards my own airfield revealed explosions of bombs impacting the runway... a little distance above a straight and level SU-34 glinted in the sun... I realised it would come after me once it pulled out of its bombing run, I had only one shot at this... I aimed the nose of the hawg ahead of the offender, hoping to sligtly intercept his course as I anticipated a turn out to sea towards my aircraft... after a minute I could see a proper outline of the aircraft.... damn ive been spotted... the Su-34 started to pull towards me... lucky I was close enough to lead my nose ahead of his turn.... last chance... I rolled left placing his plane at the bottom of my aiming funnel, as his plane reached half-way, I pulled the trigger and let out two bursts of cannon fire, the first burst fell short, with the second ripping a tear down the centreline of the SU, it burst into flames... smoke bellowed from its right engine, the plane started to gently yaw and plummetted to the sea, the pilots never ejected. And thats my first hawg A-A kill, I dont count helos as A-A kills really. I hope some of you found that interesting, it was really quite exciting, I had one shot at the last SU otherwise I would have been out-manuevered and downed, really quite tense, especially all that time I spent flying the mission, the thought of being nailed on landing, did not appeal to me much :) Thanks for reading!!

Oh god, I can see this thread getting out of hand lol

F-15 radar ... what range to see a KC-10?
SAM-Smasher replied to Kula66's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks for the correction, any idea why he may have only picked up the KC-10 at 45 miles out in that case? :? edit: I should have kept my mouth shut  -
F-15 radar ... what range to see a KC-10?
SAM-Smasher replied to Kula66's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
If I read you correct, if this is the heading of both of the aircraft at time of detection, the KC-10 is essentially heading away from you, this will weaken its radar return, because the velocity of closure has been reduced. If you try some testing I would be very keen to see what your results are  edit: Just read your post, and 120 miles sounds about right, what were the conditions? or when you say head-on, do you mean both aircraft heading towards each other? in which case that makes perfect sense to me!! :D -
I have taken to flying and practicing in these aircraft alot recently, and I use ecm only after I have recieved a launch warning, there is no point increasing your profile in these aircraft until it is necessary to dodge an incoming missile, also due to aircraft using HOJ, you want to prevent them using this ability to launch their missiles, this is very important when attacked by AMRAAM capable aircraft. You can use your ecm when you are in a HOT SAM area to reduce pk from lock to launch, it is possible that you may not recieve a launch warning, but a SAM launch is usually quite easy to spot, so with practice and plenty of SA this should not be a problem to you. ( you may want to re-think your use of ecm in SAM zones when you know there are enemy planes around, but then should you have entered a SAM engagement zone when there are air threats around?? ) Hope this is useful :D

F-15 radar ... what range to see a KC-10?
SAM-Smasher replied to Kula66's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I think this is difficult to say, it also depends on your altitude and the direction the KC-10 is heading in relation to your flight path, have you tried varying the conditions for this? It is a big target, but even a big target can have weaker returns based on the conditions. -
What it is necessary to make into the LockOn?
SAM-Smasher replied to Lemon Lime's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
This is a very interesting poll, currently the addition of the F-18 is on par with the Su27\33 being improved. I am very interested to see how this eventually pans out, personally I predict a tie with this one. But IMHO --- Vote Su-27\33 you know you want to 8) -
Su39 carrier landing capabilities in 1.1 ?
SAM-Smasher replied to IKG200 Swierczek's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
And that is why it is such a good laugh, but my good friends try an approach from the front of a carrier that is insanity in itself and not very safe to boot. :D -
Creating higth poly 3D Models and sending it to the DEVS
SAM-Smasher replied to wsoul2k's topic in 3D Modeling for DCS World
Do any of you know anyone working on the Tornado aircraft? just interested to see whether there is any interest in our native attack jet on the modelling side... no bias of course... -
Oh crap guys, I looked at the name of this thread and my hopes were raised!!! but upon reading further my hopes were smashed by a R-27T ( because I didnt see it coming  sorry )

Any sign of more AAA in the upgrade or in future
SAM-Smasher replied to Kula66's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Yes good point, especially say on a mission where your flying low through a valley at night and there are countless optical AA batteries waiting in ambush, greeting you to the area with a sky full of fire, dodging that stuff would be so much fun whilst sticking to the valley boundaries, the possibilities would be most certainly endless. :D I would say have flak, but that would definatley be an FPS issue and require quite a bit of coding I expect, but its nice to dream lol. -
I totally agree with you on that point  maneuvering combat really isnt the place to be looking at the target to padlock, but targets far out that ARE visible to eyeball I believe should require a proper look to padlock it, so on that note could the padlock function be put into two stages based on how far out the target is. - So 2nm and under classed as manuevering combat so padlock can be obtained from any angle. - Any further out requires actually looking at the target. But I can imagine this would be quite complex to code in? :? Thanks, just checking I didnt want to sound like an idiot in this thread :)
-
Hmmm thats odd because when I tested it out when I bought LOMAC, I could padlock targets I was currently un-aware of and could not actually see, was this changed in the patch? I had not tried it since I patched up the sim however :? If this is the case I will remove the comment from my post

Enjoying Russian aircraft in LOMAC
SAM-Smasher replied to SAM-Smasher's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
lol Thats what I was doing before, dont exactly know what has shot at me, but I do the manuevers anyway. So no real urgency for me remember the type of radar that the lights are showing, just look at where its coming from and the counter. Thought I was going mad for a second  Thanks Drakkhen -

Ok I see what you are saying, so would I be right in saying EWR to the right, and Air radar to the Left, AA and SAMs in between all that! You see I had read all of this before, but in flight I just go cross eyed looking at the RWR, I think a Post-It note on my monitor or keyboard my drill that through. -

I have to agree with you there mate, the RWR's positioning really annoys me, but hey we cant have everything I suppose. Another thing about the RWR, is I always have trouble remembering which number light means what type of radar, doesnt bother me a huge deal I can usually guess what it is. :) For those of you who have flown the MiG29 in the ground attack role, would you agree that it is great fun in that aircraft? making a fast swiping rocket attack at the target dropping flares a burning away before the AA gets wise? 8) -
With the AMRAAM I believe a launch tone would be heard, because the missile is actively painting his aircraft, and turning off ECM would make the RWR aware of the attack, thus an initial launch warning would be given, I cant say 100% with-out testing this somehow, but thats how I believe it to be. With a SARH missile, there would be no launch tone after downing ECM, because the missile has already been launched and is riding a beam, so the only tone would be the lock warning produced by your radar holding his aircraft in lock. If you see what I mean  Hope this helps, I apologise if I have made any error in my statement :?

I personally prefer to not use the padlock function, simply for the fact that it adds to the atmosphere of the situation, I find it quite a rush looking around for a launched missile or a fighter coming to the merge which I lost on my radar, it is a sense of urgency, which I find is lost if I use the padlock functions. True ive been blown out of the sky alot doing this, but through sticking with getting blown out of the sky and constantly looking, ive taught myself to look for things on my own, which I never did with Falcon 4. This has now increased both the atmosphere and my Situational Awareness. But to your question of what I would like to see in a padlock, my answer would be a padlock that does not track straight to a target that is not even visible yet, or out of the field of view, the moment you press the key. The ideal padlock would be one where you have to move the view, so that it is roughly centred around where the target\missile is, and only then can you padlock it, simulating that you the pilot must have seen it first in order to padlock it. Excuse me if I waffled, but I found it hard to put it into other words

Thats useful that rules out one problem, thanks Kula  I was reading on the Microsoft website, something to do with changing where your RAM is positioned, maybe you could try that, although the answers on the site are usually quite general and often dont work, its worth a go. However if you only get this with LOMAC, I doubt this would be the problem. Again, why not try a full re-install and re-patch? :)

Excellent stuff, if you can do it, please let us know how, it would be useful in creating some detailed missions!!. :D

Is there not a way where a LUA script can be run, to make LOMAC think that the B1-B is an F-15 for the duration of the refuel waypoint? I imagine the connection would look odd though. Just an idea
