Dugulus Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 So, I started the download early this afternoon, and will have to wait until tomorrow before its downloaded. Since its the Beta version, I know people are going to report issues and bugs. But, while I, and others are waiting to get this awesome sim, I would like to ask the people using it.....What do they find good, great and or amazing?
Bucic Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Does 'military grade flight simulator' ring a bell? Or are you just curious about the differences between DCS BS and DCS A-10C W? You can start reading the game manual introduction chapter right now. There are some explanations. Dugulus Posted October 5, 2010 Author Posted October 5, 2010 I am curious as to what stands out for people flying this sim. Including improvements and upgrades compared to BS. Or just general things that are may be impressive (like firing the Gat!). I thought it would be nice to start a thread that contained all positive things, so ED can get some good feedback on their efforts.
Bucic Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) If you want my input then my opinion comprises of two things - official info on the DCS BS features* + my review on Direct2Drive. Then add the improvements over BS in A-10C W (official info again). *if it doesn't impress you then maybe you choose the wrong sim :) What I'm trying to say is that it's been said through and through what's good about DCS series (official info; which is true) and what is bad (dumb wingman, not colidable trees). Also there's no revolutionary differences as DCS series is supposed to gradually evolve with each module's release. Well, you can consider revolutionary the fact that this is the first module for commercial customers that come from a real military contract. sinelnic Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 The flight model is very very cool, the plane seems very responsive and not "smoothed out". If you see a video of the A-10 taxiing, you get the exact same feeling, it´s difficult to explain, but it´s awesome. The cockpit and systems, are so detailed you really feel you´re interacting with the real thing. Just look at all the HUD symbology, you feel you need a lot of study to understand everything. The sound, is extraordinary, nothing like I´ve experienced before in a flight sim. The engines reverberate in the cockpit... make a loop, cut the engines, and then spool them back up, and you *feel* them coming alive... again, never before seen (heard) in this market. The graphics are WIP and not optimized yet it appears, but the texture resolution and terrain resolution have been improved, and look much better than DCS:BS, imho. But the overall sense of being *in* and interacting *with* the real thing is really there, for me, light years apart from the Shark so universes apart from anything else. Dugulus Posted October 5, 2010 Author Posted October 5, 2010 Nice! This was exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for. Can't wait to get it up and running!
sweinhart3 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) I will say this sim makes me feel like Im in a plane much more than any other sim out there except maybe X-Plane. The systems are very complicated and I still am barely figuring anything out. I did manage a takeoff without problem and landing did not end up in a wreck despite a flameout situation on both engines. Not sure why it happened. After I expended all my ammo I decided to do some inverted flying over the target practice area and half way across both engines still died. Had plenty of gas. Much to learn in this sim. Also the GAU-8 effects are just no words can describe. It actually startled me when it first went off. Not used to using dual stage trigger and couldnt figure out why nothing was happening when I squeezed the trigger, but after awhile the first time it went off I nearly jumped. This thing makes me leave with smiles on my face. My pit needs work and my hotas cougar is feeling inadequate for the job. dne48 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 And for a real newbie (though I have flown many other combat flight sims) I only a month ago purchased Lock On FC2. I only had a half dozen opportunities to get the sim going because of real life and found it difficult and intimidating in sim mode. Sos I flew in "game mode" to get a feel. I believe this is to have the "game" mode. Is it available in the beta version? Thanks "To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home."-----anonymous

dne48 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Thanks Mower, but was hoping for a little more than that. The question was is , does the beta version have the choice of the "game mode" so one can get somewhat used to the cockpit and etc of the A-10. I have thousands of hours in FSX, flew Falcon 4.0 and almost everything in the air since the invention of the computer. SO the intimidation factor can only hit me so hard and then age and experience take over. And sometimes that is when I wish I was 20 years younger. Ay help will be much appreciated on my question "To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home."-----anonymous
Udat Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) Yes it will have a game mode when it comes out.. Wether it is in the beta, I don't know, maybe a beta tester can answer. Edit: *facepalm* it's open beta with pre-purchase, niiiiice!! Then your answer is to pre-purchase, mate :) Edited October 5, 2010 by Udat Intel i7-950 @stock, Asus P6X58D-E, 3x4GB Corsair Vengeance, Asus GTX 580, Corsair 120GB SSD, Corsair HX 750W PSU [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
nomdeplume Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Yes, the current open beta does have game mode, and it seems to work as expected. I've not really played it with BS but I just had a quick go and it had red diamonds around enemies and such.
Shake3000 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 ... gravity feed. Huh? I'm not questioning you but how does this work when the engines are situated higher than the fuel tanks? Also, first post :) edit: 26 minutes left on the torrent omgomgomg
GGTharos Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Nah you're probably right. I have to re-check the fuel feed particulars. Might be that they only feed from the bottom of the tank (or other similar issue) which could cause issues with negative g flight lasting longer than x amount of seconds. This is a real issue in other aircraft, not sure about the A-10 itself. Huh? I'm not questioning you but how does this work when the engines are situated higher than the fuel tanks? Steel Jaw Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) I'm a hard guy...errr, difficult guy :D -- to impress with with flight sims. But the DCS A10C has done it. Last time I was this excited about a sim was dec 98 when i picked up Falcon 4. Also, first post :) edit: 26 minutes left on the torrent omgomgomg Fuel boost pumps will get the fuel from the tanks to the engines, but the feed will be at the bottom of the tank, so is useless when inverted. Not sure about the A-10C, but some aircraft are fitted with inverted flight tanks. I don't know the details, but I'd imagine they're small tanks with the feeds located at the top. Fly inverted for too long, they'll run out!
