By 'detected and shot down' they mean 'it suffered an engine failure and landed in front of us'. :)

That mean:

Update: NATO says that their operators lost control of a drone last week over western Afghanistan.

Iran military officials claim the plane was downed on their East border and has little damage. They say it was not shot down by jet fighters or ground defenses, but using some kind of electronic interference:"The informed source said on Sunday that Iran Army's electronic warfare unit successfully targeted the American-built RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft after it crossed into Iranian airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan."

Is this the official NATO version of what happened, cause the info info I've seen is the confirmation on a lost aircraft over western Afghanistan... ninja'd.

Wow this is as exciting as shooting down Georgian UAV by Russian MiG in 2008 :D

Iran proved is capable to kill UAV too but in more sophisticated way.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Either way, they didn't shoot down squat - undoubtedly though, if they do have it, it's on its way to China :)

The only more sophisticated thing in Iran is the sophisticatedly hot weather, nothing more.

It is also a possibility that the Iranians heard of a downed UAV, and faked the capture of it as a sort of psychological warfare. It is also possible that the UAV isn't an RQ-170 as they claim, as no N.A.T.O. sources have confirmed exactly what model of aircraft went down.

With how protective U.S. forces are over their technology however, if such a drone did go down. It is more likely to have been targeted by a strike package of some sort in order to destroy the aircraft. Either that or it was retrieved by ground or helicopter.

Though more importantly, is to consider all possible implications of what could have occurred. Drawing biased solutions is an easy task. Drawing accurate ones can at times prove to be more difficult.

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

It's not always that simple, it took them how much, several days to find the F-22 that crashed in Alaska? And that's not on the other side of the world in hostile territory. We don't know where it fell, might be in an area with heavy anti-air defense, loosing a Mud Hen in addition would be a much greater loss.

Don't misconstrue my comments. I meant that there is a possibility, what with the lack of any reliable information, that any number of things could have happened. Which is why it is important not to draw any conclusions on exactly what happened until more information comes out.

"With the lack of reliable info anything is possible" I do not deny this. There's a possibility that God exists.

Now going back to the news posted, the people who commented in this thread are not drawing conclusions but are posting possible scenarios, much like you did in post #8, so your call for not drawing any conclusions is somewhat redundant at this phase of the discussion.

"In the past, they have claimed these shoot-downs and been unable to produce any pieces of the drone, and currently, they have not exhibited any piece of the RQ-170 yet," he said.

The Iranians gave it so quickly to the Chinese that there wasn't any time to take a couple of shots :D

^^Which brings up the question whether it was a 170 or not. Because if it was a 170, wtf is it doing spying on cavemen in Western A'stan, why it needs stealth? So the 2 scenarios are... it wasn't the 170 and it simply went out of control/engine failure and crossed the border (shudda went Rolls Royce, yankees.) Or,... it WAS the 170 and developed problems while on a mission IN Iran.

We'll never now if they show anything whether it is the original or the Chinese copy. :D

Ok leaving out of the discussion women who look like well-shaved men :D, do you guys think the RQ-170 being in Chinese hands (assumption) might be a good reason for the US to take a different path with regard to some stealth solutions and technologies, and possibly to throw in more money in anti-stealth research? Do you think that a rather undamaged Sentinel in the potential adversaries' hands might jeopardize programs like the F-35 for instance?
