StitchJones Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Currently I am flying the campaign for the P-51D. With no GPS, or INS I can see how this was the only way to provide a way to navigate. My suggestion is to provide us with the Climb, Cruise, and Descent data. This data will really give us a sense of what it was like to navigate using a compass, stopwatch, and an E-6B.This type of navigation is called Ded Reckoning and is still taught today. Leave the green waypoint squares as an option for those that aren't interested in that level of realism. Another Idea I had was allow us to plot our routes in the mission builder then just display a navigation log on the kneeboard. This log would import the winds, compute the compass heading, groundspeed, and ETE. That's how it was done in 1940 (except all they had was pencil and paper) This is the best simulation I have ever owned. I have been waiting for this for a long time. I just need a little more data.

PFunk1606688187 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Used to do this all the time in IL-2 with printed maps... at night... in bad weather... uphill 8 miles in the snow.... I tell ya its good fun and you learn the real danger of complacency. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
Der_Fred Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 As in IL2.. I study the map, and remember key features.
marluk Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Yes, that would be really great addition to the realism and it is not complicated feature to develop. I suppose, it should be mandatory fature of the DCS WWII. *NOB* Lucky [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Tko vrijedi leti, tko leti vrijedi, tko ne leti ne vrijedi

lesnyborsuk Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) I am currently developing standalone application for VFR navigation. You can plot your route on OpenStreet map, enter WP by GPS position, search airports, VORs, or cities in DB. You enter wind values, your cruise speed, magnetic deviation and it calculates all your needed magnetic headings, wind correctons, fuel burn (basic calculations) and time to reach waypoints. It is still WIP but it saves me 1-2 hours of preparations before my real world flights (I am student pilot to PPL(A)). I am planning to release this as freeware. Recently I didn't have time to continue development, but I could fix some major issues and share it with you, if you're interested :). BTW: I have implemented feature to export created route to FSX flight plan, so maybe it would be possible to implement feature to create DCS mission file somewhere in the future (However at this point this is my "lucky guess" because I am not familar with mission file format yet). effte Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 My suggestion is to provide us with the Climb, Cruise, and Descent data. Get hold of the POHs for the aircraft. I'm sure they are linked somewhere in this forum - there are at least two available, one from 1945 and an F-51 version from later on. They contain all the data you need.
