It's the trigger under the collective head.

The flight manual will list the service ceiling, I think it was less than 20,000 feet, but I'll leave it to you to search for it.

Don't know about the DCS version, never had a reason to try.

The crew won't be able to operate that high without oxygen though.

Hi, guys!

Ah, I get it now! Is it possible to get the Huey to an altitude of 25,000 feet which is a very job?? Thanks!

Cheers,

Vincent

I've gotten to the top of the tallest mountain, which sits at around 18k ft.

Barely mind you.

Had to bunny hop over to the slope and slide down a good mile to get back in the air.:joystick:

I have gotten to 19,690... but never made it to 20,000

Hi, guys!

I'm having trouble keeping the helicopter stable when doing landings. How do I keep the helicopter stable when landing like what the real helicopter pilots do? Thanks!

You have to understand (and watch for) what is called VRS (Vortex Ring State) which is, essentially, a donut of air around your rotors that cancels any lift the rotors give. Look it up and study it. Practice getting into VRS and out of it. (VRS typically gets started when you descend way too fast. You can also get into a VRS by making a combat approach and flaring to a stop too fast.... Slap into the ground you go!)

Next, keep in mind that as you get into ground effect from the rotors, there will be a different type of lift from those rotors as well as a big exaggeration to the torque (the tendency to twist to the right) which you must correct for with your rudder pedals.

Going from translational lift (flying forward) to a hover can be seen and felt by the shudder the Huey gives. It's the same feeling you get when you fly forward way too fast. That shudder should tell you that you are approaching hover speed.

Put all this together and it's understandable how people can find flying a Huey a bit confusing. But, once you get it all sorted out, flying the Huey is like riding a magic carpet: awesome!

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

The problem with the huey isn't so much Vortex-ring state as having to compensate for ETL (Effective Translational Lift), or a lack there of. Its very hard to get into VRS with a huey without TRYING to. If you're flying with a heavy load be mindful of settling with power though (Settling with power =/= VRS) you'll come out of ETL, start descending and not have the power required to keep you in the air OGE.

Hi, guys!

I don't have the pedals, I just have a keyboard, mouse, and the attack 3 joystick, so how do I keep the helicopter from yawning left/right when at 0 knots prior to landing the helicopter? Thanks!

Vincent

TL: DR - Adjust your anti-torque (yaw pedals/ joystick twist) to compensate when you increase/decrease the collective.

--------------------------------

You want to be flying a profile similar to this

20061030011535!Hvcurve.png

And adjusting your anti-torque (yaw pedals/ joystick twist) to compensate as you increase/decrease the collective.

In general use pitch to control airspeed, collective to control decent.

Below approx. 40 knots you lose translational (forward movement) lift and above approx. 20 ft. height you'll lose ground effect.

Hi, guys!

Question for you, I'm using the game mode to fly the helicopter because I just have the joystick to fly. Is there a keyboard command toggle for throttle indicator off/on? Please see attached. Thanks!

Answer for you: that is not a throttle indicator, that is the health bar of the helo which shows how much damage it has taken already. Afaik it can only disabled by deactivating the game mode.

Or by modding some lua files: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=2234306

Hrm, and a tip for you! :o) You can make pictures of your screen by just pressing the PrintScreen key (usually at the upper half of your keyboard between the numeric key pad and the alphabetic keys). You find the screenshots then under C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\DCS\ScreenShots

UH-1H Huey training and Black Shark 2

Hello all,

Is the Huey a suitable training helicopter to help with my Black Shark flying skills, or are they too different? I just got the Huey module this weekend and I find it more difficult than the Black Shark at the moment. I have been learning the Ka-50 for a while now, still not great at it yet though.

Imo learning to fly the Huey will give you a better understanding of the dynamics of flying a helo in general. This will help you also flying the Black Shark as you will be able to understand some systems better, prominently the autopilot, what it does and how it helps you.

Not saying that learning the Huey and then learning the Black Shark will be easier than learning the Black Shark alone, but if you like helos, imho you can't do anything wrong with taking some time learning the Huey. Worth it - GREAT helo. :o)

Search this subforum for some other threads in the last couple of months - lots of info about how to get a grip on the Huey (and similar threads for the Black Shark).

Thanks. My aim is handle basic flight better. I have more time in the Ka-50 but it is still flying me 60% of the time.

Hi, guys!

I really enjoy flying the DCS uh-1h helicopter!! Do you know how many switches are there in the DCS uh-1h Huey helicopter cockpit? I counted the non-functioning switches in the DCS uh-1h helicopter cockpit, there are 17 non-functioning switches in the DCS uh-1h helicopter, so I'm wondering if these 17 non-functioning switches will eventually be functional? Thanks!

I bet, you will get an answer quicker if you count them by yourself than if you wait for others to count them for you ... :o)

Hi, Flagrum!

On the DCS uh-1h Huey helicopter there are 174 functioning switches and 17 non-functioning switches on the uh-1h Huey helicopter cockpit!

Hi, guys!

Question for you, does the DCS UH-1H engine takes the same amount of time to get completely started like in the real UH-1H, and does the DCS UH-1H engine takes the same amount of time to completely shutdown like in the real UH-1H? Thanks!

Cheers,

Vincent

I can't answer that for sure, but last year I had the chance to get flown around in a Jet Ranger (Bell 206) and the engine start felt and sounded very much like it does in the DCS Huey. I was too excited to monitor the exact spool-up duration, but I think the Huey is pretty close to that particular Jet Ranger I flew in. Especially the wobble when the (two bladed) rotor starts to spin up is like a 100% match.
