warthogmadman987 Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 My dad told me that Ubisoft was (or is in the process) of being sued over starforce. He didnt get into detail with me, he was busy at the time. I was wondering some things- Is it TRUE? If this happens, and ubisoft owes money, will Lockon, FC, and/or BS be affected in anyway? I am not trying to hurt ED in anyway but just want to know the facts. Does anyone know anymore facts, like the fine details, or can direct me towards it? Starforce does not personally have an effect on my computer but it does screw up a few things on my fathers computer, he is also wondering if this is important to us, but he doesnt think anything will come of it and affect the lockon community. I bring this up because there have been big discussions in the past about starforce. -just thought i would mix the pot a little.
emenance Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 yes there are some people trying a class action lawsuit. Even if they won you might get 3 dollars. Paypal was sued will a CAL and I think I got 10 dollars or something. I cant think of one person in this forum or in the ubi forums who I believe has a good knowledge of how a computer works make a solid claim agaist starforce causeing damage to thier computer. case closed!!!!!!!! condor11 Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Welcome to the good old USA where you can sue anybody for anything and probably win! :) Hi Mom!
Prophet_169th Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Which court is it going to? If its not the west coast 9th Circuit, they wont win. If it is the 9th Circuit, those a-holes will award anyone anything.
Guest IguanaKing Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Are they the ones that awarded the burglar after he fell through a skylight of the building he was robbing and broke his poor, wittle, weg?
Capt.Instigator Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Instigator: Runs to microwave oven to retrieve a fresh hot batch of Pop-corn..... comes back and reclines for some well deserved cup of BullSh.... Here we go ...on 1, 2 ........
warthogmadman987 Posted April 2, 2006 Author Posted April 2, 2006 I didnt mean to do anything offensive to anyone here or to ED themselves. I am sure i made that clear in my first post. I just wanted to know the facts. I am sorry.

Prophet_169th Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I think SF coming out and saying they will give $$$ to anyone who can prove it damaged their system, is a good enough defense. I dont think anyone ever claimed it... wonder why?
Revvin Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 This will only serve to hurt the flight sim genre. It gives Ubisoft more reason to dump the flight sim genre when they are one of the few large global publishers still publishing flight sims, it may hurt ED if they are forced into changing their copy protection system which will cost them money and money from any delays this would cause. The only ones who win here are the lawyers unfortunately
Shepski Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I don't think Ubi Soft will publish another Eagle product so I doubt thats a worry. Ubi Soft isn't interested in flight sims anymore from what I gather... they have already dumped it.
Prophet_169th Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Too much hype. And it has nothing to do with the flightsim community really, LOMAC uses SF but what other flight sim does? And the reason Ubi is being sued, is because they are the publisher. Most likely they have a big, if not sole, opinion on what copyright protection scheme to follow. If anything comes of this, it will be no more SF. But is that really the best for the software companies? They spend the money on SF, because it is cheaper to do so, than not and let piracy reign. And when you think about it, what is the issues that are with SF? For most users, its almost seemless. Very few have problems, and usually the reinstall of drivers fixes it. Really to much hype about this, I am sure it will come to nothing.
Crusty Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I honestly dont understand how anyone thinks its worth creating a flight sim these days, my impression is the market is tiny and highly demanding oo err...missus:animals_bunny: ** Anti-Pastie**
S77th-GOYA Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Exactly. If SF is truly the evil they say it is, you'd go to the source if what you were trying to do is stop all the horrendous damage it does. Only problem is that a Russian dev team isn't gonna have the millions that lawyers want for their bank account. Not exactly. If this suit costs Ubi millions of dollars it will effectively shut SF down. Who would put a Pinto gas tank in their new cars? But of course, then the number crunchers go to work deciding if the potential financial risk is worth the lost revenue due to piracy. Note to SK: Dongles can be cracked too.
Force_Feedback Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Yeah, I still can post in this thread, wowee! I have some experiences with starforce before it got all big and popular, when it was only used on the Russian market, and I say it has improved in stability (with the earlier versions I often couldn't even run the game it was with) but it got more intrusive, leading to stutters at startup and slowdowns while running the software. Guest IguanaKing Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 A plastic surgeon maybe Could suck the fat right out of me And if I die, or if it hurts I can sue somebody for all he's worth Who is looking out for me? When I close my eyes and leap Its my life to lead But its not my responsibility This litigious crap doesn't help the consumer. In a class action suit, the consumer gets less than 10 bucks for his participation, the sharks get $300 per hour...THAT'S the real reason they love cases like this. Does it have an effect on the operation of the Defendant's business? Yes...it causes him to change to something else...which people will still find fault with. AND it makes his prices go up. Again...yay for the consumer! :horseback
