Shahdoh’s DCS World Mustang Racing Series

Racing Rules

This document will layout the rules and guidelines of this racing series which will be flown using DCS World’s TF-51D Mustang using full realism settings. This aircraft was chosen for the series for numerous reasons. 1st off, it is available for free to everyone, it has professional level flight modeling (DCS’s highest level) and it also takes knowledge and skill to make the Mustang perform at its best. It is not just a throw the throttles full forward and yank and bank aircraft, it is also susceptible to engine abuse so care must be taken when pushing it to its limits.

Race Tracks - http://www.virtual-aerobatics.com/air-racing/tracks/

The series will consist of 6 race courses flown over a 6 month period of time (1 per month). 3 of the race courses are recreations of Red Bull courses, you may already have experienced these on the Virtual Aerobatics server.

Batumi - designed off the 2010 New York course

Abu Dhabi - 2014 course

Tbilisi - 2008 course

These will be flown in head to head competition (pairs) in a full double elimination tournament. Due to time constraints, qualifying will be open for 1 week prior to race day and the top 12 will fill the brackets. The brackets are scheduled to be ran 1 every 10 minutes.

The other 3 race courses will be mass starts of up to 12 aircraft. Qualifying for those positions will again be open the week prior to race day. 2 of these will be multiple lap, go fast, turn left Reno style racing with pace plane starts. The 3rd will be a nice long dash through the canyons, also with pace plane start.

Gudauta Boomerang - 5.25 Laps

Gudauta Loop - 114 mile canyon run

Maykop 8 - 10 Laps around a figure 8 patterned course

**Revision to the points system was made due to the number of registrants received. This points spread should reward consistency more than before and more points to those in lower positions.

Points System

Points per race will be distributed as follows(**Revision 1 - Jan 26, 2015):

1st = 25............................11th = 10

2nd = 22...........................12th = 9

3rd = 20............................13th = 8

4th = 18............................14th = 7

5th = 16............................15th = 6

6th = 15............................16th = 5

7th = 14............................17th = 4

8th = 13............................18th = 3

9th = 12............................19th = 2

10th = 11..........................20th+ = 1

(Must have submitted a qualifying time to receive points)

With the new points system, comes changes to how the points are awarded for the 2 different race formats.

Short Courses ( Batumi, Abu Dhabi, Tbilisi ):

Only the top 12 qualifiers will enter the Double elimination bracket. Those qualifying 13th and lower will receive their points based on their qualifying position. Exception to this rule, if a top 12 is not able to compete on race day, that pilot is DNS (Did not start) and will receive 9 points (same as the 12th position), the next highest qualifier available on race day will be moved to the missing persons position in the bracket (unless the missing person is a top 4, if so, the number 5 moves into the missing pilots spot and the next highest available qualifier moves into the 5th position on the bracket) So, those pilots that JUST missed out of that top 12 will want to be there on race day in case positions open up.

The brackets will determine the winner down to 4th position based on when a pilot is eliminated. Positions 5-12 will be determined by the pilots fastest time on race day. If those pilots did not post a finish time (DNF), then they will receive points for 12th place.

Long Courses ( Boomerang, The Loop, Maykop 8 )

If only 12 qualifiers or less, 1 heat will be ran and points awarded accordingly. If between 13-24 qualifiers, they will be split into 2 heats - Odd numbers in heat 1 and even numbers in heat 2.

The top 3 from each heat will advance to the final heat. The remaining 6 positions will be filled with the fastest times from the remaining pilots in either heat. You MUST have a finish time to have a chance to advance to the final heat. Pilots that DNF in heats 1 and 2 will receive points for the position equal to the total numbers of pilots on race day (Example: 16 pilots show up on race day. 2 heats of 8 pilots each are ran. 3 pilots DNF in either heat 1 or 2. Those 3 pilots will receive points for the 16th place.) Pilots that DNF in the final heat will receive points for the position equal to the total numbers of pilots in that final heat (Only 10 pilots in final heat, then DNFs in that heat will receive points for 10th place). Finish times will determine position placement of all pilots from heats 1 and 2, that did not make it to the final heat.

Aircraft Tracking

Lua scripting will handle the timing and penalties on the course and is accurate to 100th of a second. All trigger areas (where the timing is performed) are round circles that are marked by various pylons. Only in game items are used, so depending on location, this might be anything from oil rigs to tv antennas. Whichever is used, will be consistent for that particular race. The courses have 2 altitude limits. 1 for the whole course, fly higher than that set altitude and you will be disqualified. The other is altitude limit set for the gates themselves. Fly higher then the set gate altitude (only up to 2 times that alt) will incur a penalty, same as if you missed the gate. The difference is you can miss as many gate altitude checks and continue to race, but completely miss more than 3 gates will disqualify you from the race. Time penalties for missing a gate or missing the altitude at a gate will vary per race course. Also, race judges will be watching for purposeful missing of gates to gain time advantages. Such actions will result in immediate disqualification for that race.

Accidents

Avoidance of collisions is the responsibility of the aircraft to the rear or overtaking aircraft. Aircraft in front, or being overtaken, must hold their race lines. If the front aircraft (or if being passed) swerves to block the aircraft doing the passing, will be charged with the incident and lose their position to that aircraft. If such action does not result in an accident, race judges can add an additional gate penalty to the pilot at the end of the race. A pass is considered complete when the passing aircraft's tail is completely in front of the passed aircraft's nose. At that time, responsibility to avoid an accident changes to the passed aircraft.

If an incident occurs, those involved, their positions will be locked for that moment, with the guilty pilot placing behind the others.

Elimination races, guilty pilot is charged with the loss. Both pilots will receive no time for the course.

Mass start races, places will be locked until other pilots still flying pass those positions. No times can be awarded of course.

Lags/warping

Being the internet, warps will happen. To combat this, all contestants will use the recommended DCS network speed settings of ADSL 2048. A pilot who is obviously warping prior to racing will be given 1 chance to clean up the connection or be disqualified from the race. If a warp happens during the 1st half of a race that results in a collision, 1 restart per race will be allowed (once per bracket race or 1 mass restart). If collision due to warp happens in the 2nd half of the race, crashed pilot positions will be locked per above incident rules.

Weather

Weather (temperatures, winds and cloud cover) on race days will be set according to real weather reports for that day from that location, kept within reason. Excessive values that would prevent racing normally will be toned down to allow racing to occur.

Schedule

The first race of the season will be held on the 15th of February during the Virtual Aerobatics 2nd Anniversary Air Show. The remaining race days will be held on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The racing will begin at 5PM GMT(the start time for the race at the VA show subject to change for airshow scheduling) and will be streamed live on Twitch. The server will be locked with a password on race day to prevent interruptions. File integrity checks will also ensure aircraft performance remains as DCS intended.

The server will remain up without password for practice and or qualifying. Each pilot that has registered must select a livery that will be theirs alone. Scripting will be used to ensure only that person can log in to that livery. There will be non-reserved aircraft on the server for others to try their hand at racing too.

Qualifying

Qualifying will be open for 1 whole week prior to race day and must be done on the server. You can attempt to qualify as many times as you like, but can only submit a time once. Just take a screenshot of the moment when the finish time displays or screenshot the radio report for that course. I will be confirming that the times came from the server.

Registration

Anyone can register for the series to compete at any time. Competitors may be removed if they prove to be disruptive to the series for any reason. If there is a complaint, bring it up calmly and constructively. We want to see clean racing and not a crash fest.

To Register, please provide the following

Thank you for the entries so far, registry updated. To help me out, and others interested, if the applicants could please put the actual link to the skin you wish to use. Sometimes there are different versions and such, and the link you provide will ensure we get the version you want.

I will be providing a complete package of all the skins to the racing pilots so that everyone will see all the skins.

By the weekend (Jan 10), I should have the practice server setup with your reserved aircraft at each of the courses. Please let me know if your login name is different than what I have registered. Please be sure to log in and practice on the server to ensure your connectivity is good and please remember to use DCS Network speed of ADSL 2048 for best results.

Reserved aircraft have been added to the practice server for those pilots I have the skins for. They are identified in the group name with "R:<Aircraft Name>" followed by the track code that they are near. PM me if you are unable to get in your reserved aircraft and will have it fixed ASAP.
