I went through the start up training just fine and developed a custom startup checklist from that.

Afterwards I loaded my own multiplayer mission to practice startups but I run into 2 problems.

1. If I have the battery on while I'm going over the checklist and I sit like this for 5-10 minutes on the tarmac before trying to do the engine start the gas producer never goes past 10% when I do finally try to start the engine. Is there a time limit that you have to start the engine within before the battery wears down? If I go through the checklist quickly and start right away I don't have this problem (though I do have the next one).

2. When I don't have the above problem and I hit and hold the start engine button, the engine doesn't light unless I add a bit of throttle (instead of being at idle like in the startup training mission). Once yhe engine catches i can reduce the throttle back to idle. Anyone else running into this?

1) Always use ground power when you can.

2) You have 3 positions on throttle, stop, idle and flight. You need to add a bit of throttle to be in idle position at start.

With regards to the throttle, if you haven't already, press "ralt + enter" (or rctrl+enter, one of the two) to bring up the axis debug screen.

If you pay attention to the left, you can see what your throttle is doing. The Huey starts with the throttle off, but once you roll past 5% or so, you reach the idle position and can't drop back below it (without pressing the button on the collective).

Obviously, you need to make sure the throttle is at idle at 10% N2 to introduce fuel to the engine.

And once your engine starts, you have to hold the starter for 40 seconds (max) or wait till N1 reaches 40% and it is self sustaining.

Ok. #2 I think has been answered well. But, what about #1? Do you have a certain time limit you have to start the engine within (if you are not using ground power)?

Just check that you have enough battery power (22VDC from memory) and you're good to go.

if you're going to be sitting on battery power for a while prior to start, consider leaving your anti-coll and position lights off as well as any unnecessary electrical items as they'll gradually drain the battery.

Don't remember how long it would take to drain the battery IRL or in-sim.

Long enough. :)

Oh crap, just got your question. It shouldn't take you too terribly long to turn on battery power, generator, set the electrical buses, the fuel pump, hydraulic pumps and start the engine. I would recommend doing all of your avionics checks at least at idle, if not fly (Or prior to supplying battery power).

I know the colder it gets, the shorter amount of time you have, if you can start at all.

This. It usually takes me about 30 seconds to get there, during which time the battery hasn't really discharged at all. The golden rule: radios, navaids, weapons etc. on ONLY after switching on your generators & inverters :)

But you can't ask the tower for start-up clearence if you don't turn your radio on.

In the real life, my pilots don't talk to tower until they're ready to taxi. :music_whistling:

Once they're ready, they call ground for permission to taxi and then they talk to tower to take off once they get to the runway. Or they can just call tower if they want to do a present position take off because helicopter, f*ck yeah.

Only in the U.S. and some other country's.

in Russia you need permission to start your engines.

In that case you may need ground power, though turning on the radio only shouldn't use too much juice. In any case, taking that long to start the thing is not justified. From cold start to flight ready is about a dozen steps, half of which are done after the engine is running. The others (excluding the actual start) can be done with the battery off.

True, but the VHF transceiver doesn't draw much power, so I'm sure you can turn it on immediately if you want. Didn't think of this since I've been flying from non-ATC FARPs lately

When I try for full immersion I always turn radio on after battery to request start-up in whatever I fly. Turning on the battery for the short time it takes is a negligable drain. Your starting almost immediately and as long as your alternator belt is tight your fine;)

That sounds like it would be tremendously taxing on the ground/tower side of things at even slightly busy airports. I'm at a relatively small airfield; if we had to ask permission to start engines every time we did a simple run-up, the air waves would be clogged with useless garbage...

Even here, we only need to call ground to get on the taxiway. We can re-position on the ramp pretty much right up to the taxiway to do an engine HIT check without talking to anyone. Granted there are general guidelines and gentlemanly decor that must be adhered to (like staying on the lines/staying away from other aircraft & people working on them), but we don't have to ask permission to do any of it.

Never flown a UH-1 but surely this is incorrect.

Sure the starter can be activated but engine starting?

B206 requires the throttle to be moved into flt idle for light-off.

I think he's talking about once N1 reaches 5% (Though I generally wait for 10%) to introduce fuel.

In the army we dont request permission to start up, but on Air Force bases I have had to. It does not clog up the airwaves because you call ground control not tower. I do call my operations whenever I taxi for departure or HIT check, I call tower when I am ready to takeoff. Different places have different rules.
