guitarxe Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Has anyone read the book "Stick and Rudder" by Wolfgang Langewiesche? Is there an equivalent book for flying helicopters?
derelor Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I read "Stick and Rudder" twice and really enjoyed reading it. I don't know of any equivalent book for helicopters. I have "Cyclic and Collective" by Shawn Coyle, but cannot really recommend it. Pretty good, however, is "Die Hubschrauber Flugschule" by Helmut Mauch, but it's in German. 1338 - beyond leet ED Forum rules EN|DE|RU
Rogue Trooper Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Ed Macy "Apache" and "Hellfire". These books are an account of the UKs WAH-1 Apache in UK service. It is a sobering read of the Apaches used by a highly professional army where discipline and self control counts..... almost to an annoying point! Some would say not aggressive enough. Others would say top notch professionalism. HP G2 Reverb (Needs upgrading), Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate. set to OpenXR, but Open XR tool kit disabled. DCS: Pixel Density 1.0, Forced IPD at 55 (perceived world size), DLSS setting is quality at 1.0. VR Driver system: I9-9900KS 5Ghz CPU. XI Hero motherboard and RTX 3090 graphics card, 64 gigs Ram, No OC... Everything needs upgrading in this system!. Vaicom user and what a superb freebie it is! Virpil Mongoose T50M3 base & Mongoose CM2 Grip (not set for dead stick), Virpil TCS collective with counterbalance kit (woof woof). Virpil Apache Grip (OMG). MFG pedals with damper upgrade. Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound... goodbye VRS.

Rogue Trooper Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Oopps I apologize for butting in. I generally have very little idea of books that concern the funny aircraft that simply fly forwards! Please excuse my lack of knowledge in this area. Yurgon Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I'd be interested in a rotary wing version of "Stick and Rudder" as well. "Die Hubschrauber Flugschule" sounds interesting, but apparently there's a strong focus on RC helicopters and I can't tell how well that translates to our Ka-50, UH-1H and Mi-8. derelor, would you recommend that? (Leaving aside the language barrier for those who don't speak German)? There are two more books I immediately think of when it comes to helicopters. Like "Apache" these don't go into any detail on how to fly them, but they're great reads IMO (plus, Ed Macy references one of them in "Hellfire" :)) - "Low Level Hell" by Hugh L. Mills - "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason
blackbelter Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 More readings? I haven't even finished The Ace Factor yet... I feel like being in high school again...
Flagrum Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I don't know "Stick and Rudder", but what about the FAA Helo flying handbook?
AlphaOneSix Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I loved "Stick and Rudder" and I really think it does help with my real-world flying. Not sure about sim flying, but I suppose it can't hurt. I wish I knew of a helicopter-oriented version of it, I'd love to read it. Also, I have flown backwards (over the ground) in a Piper Archer, so check that block. Also didn't like "Apache" very much, but to each his own.

(Leaving aside the language barrier for those who don't speak German)? ... Yes, to me "Die Hubschrauber Flugschule" was/is very useful and I can fully recommend it. Fortunately for us sim-pilots, the "RC part" is pretty small. See for example this Amazon review: Wollte eigentlich mehr Wissen übers Helifliegen für Modellflug erfahren. Autor muß man 5 Sterne geben. 1338 - beyond leet ED Forum rules EN|DE|RU

guitarxe Posted April 7, 2015 Author Posted April 7, 2015 Welp, I always did like the sound of German, I guess I might as well start learning it now :P haha
Yurgon Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Welp, I always did like the sound of German, I guess I might as well start learning it now :P haha Jawohl! :D But seriously, if there are any good books about the topic in English, it'd be great to know about them and I haven't abandoned all hope yet. :smartass:
