Is there any way to toggle the periscope rear view mirror on and off in the mig21?

Looking through the controls i havent seen anything that seem to do that and there appears to be no clickable hot spot on the canopy to do so.

I dont think its possible to do in the real plane. The mirror is always on, since it's basically a very simple periscope contraption in the canopy. Its basically a metal box with glass sides and mirror at a 45% angle. you can turn off mirrors in the settings if you like, but that's an optional effect and has nothing to do with cockpit avionics.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

Not a bad idea, but that has nothing to do with what the OP asked. The mirrors can't be 'turned off' in the real plane.

Given that mirrors currently cut FPS nearly in half for most systems, it should have a toggle key regardless of how it works in real life.

Yes. This is another area where ED is not forcing standards. This option is there for a very good reason and should be required for all 3rd party aircraft.

Actually thats exactly what I asked. I know you cant turn off the mirror in the real plane but they dont have to deal with low framerate IRL ;)

I just wanted to know if it was possible to turn them on or off at will within a mission.

keep it on otherwise u wouldnt know if the chute has opened

Actually, the pretty noticeable deceleration should tell you that much.

Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!

A manual way to add this functionality:

{combos={{key="M"}},down = iCommandToggleMirrors, name = _('Toggle mirrors'), category = _('General')},

This can be put into the MiG-21\keyboard\default.lua and can be used to toggle the mirrors on and off like in the other modules.

Best regards,

John

Hello,

Thanks John for this command, it's perfect and I've tested with my KA-50 and when I want I can show or hide the mirrors when I want.

Thx again, Skull.

Would someone be able to help me out on how to put the command line into the lua file? I don't even know where the folder is to be honest with you guys.

\DCS World\Mods\aircraft\MIG-21BIS\Input\MiG-21\keyboard

Use notepad or something to edit the default.lua file and dump that line at the bottom and save, back up the default.lua file first obviously. Make sure mirrors is on in your options

Thanks John, helpful indeed. I also applied it to the KA-50 thanks to Skulls post, good job SKull.

Hi John,

I was quite excited when I first read this news but after having a go, I think I need your help to implement it properly.

Hopefully, anyone else having similar difficulties will also appreciate you taking the time to explain further.

First, a little info...

I am referring to DCS 1.5, Mig-21bis and have 'mirrors' checked in the DCS options menu.

Prior to reading this post I had already changed the default key bindings in the DCS options menu from RWIN (+Numpad eight) to LWIN (+Numpad eight) because I don't have a RWIN key on my keyboard.

It is strange but when i checked the default.lua, I expected to see this change but the original key command was still there. So, now I'm wondering if I have been looking at the right .lua but I've checked your path and it looks right to me.

I note some say this is a push/release type command but in my case, this key stroke combo simply turns the periscope/mirror on - there does not appear to be any way to switch it off. Mine isn't a push/hold/release type command... pressing the keys just trigger the ON state and that's it. Nothing happens when the keys are released and further presses do nothing - the mirror just stays on.

I tried copying/pasting your code into the default.lua (using notepad++) although I was not entirely sure where this code needs to be placed. I read it just needs to go 'at the end' but exactly where is ambiguous. (clarification / screen shot would be very helpful)

I also notice your code refers to the 'M' key and wonder if it is necessary to re-bind the key in DCS options menu to match this?

Hope we can get this up and running - it will be so much better.
