Wild.Bill.Kelso Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 http://www.cnn.com/2003/BUSINESS/06/26/australia.metalstorm Imagine a gun that fires a million rounds a minute -- enough to shred a target in a blink of an eye, or throw up a defensive wall against an incoming missile.
Crusty Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Been around a few years now...its bloody mental, seems to be slow getting sales for some reason, I reckon defense buyers see the demo and just go *@#$** WTF !!!111.....and walk off with pickled brains oo err...missus:animals_bunny: ** Anti-Pastie**
dynamocl Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 I remeber seeing a documentary of it on TV about 4-5 years ago, pretty impressive. They planned it to be used on tanks to destroy incoming shells/missiles. Makes a very weird noise when it is fired.
Wild.Bill.Kelso Posted May 7, 2006 Author Posted May 7, 2006 But that box propped up in the sand looks crazy. How do they aim that thing? The must have some kind of radar on new models I hope!
ARM505 Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Imagine a gun that fires a millions rounds a minute...... Now imagine how long it's ammo lasts....doh! Reload!
Pilotasso Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Imagine how long it would take to make all those rounds multiplied by thousands of weapons that needs it. LOL .
dynamocl Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 The last I heard, it was going to be a one shot wonder. No reloads, like a LAW launcher of sorts. By the way, its maximum rate of fire is said to be 1 million rounds per minute, it doesnt carry that much ammo though. I used to be able to run the 100m in 13 seconds. I couldn't run a 1km in 130 seconds. (not xactly a relevant comparison, but you get the idea)
oxking Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Nice Videos of that technology: http://www.metalstorm.com/index.php?src=news&srctype=lister&category=Latest%20Video%20%26%20Live%20Firings Greetings, OxKing from Germany
dodger42 Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 The metalstorm was designed downunder as a kangaroo control mechanism. In the early 1970s when we first got cars and learnt english, we found ourselves overrun by roos. The metalstorm was the solution. . . . Lockon Advanced Realism with Touch-Buddy
dodger42 Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Man that 'A dingo's got me baby' quote is pretty well know overseas huh? They've recently eaten a few more babies. They're more intelligent than roos and in fewer numbers and thus harder to find. Our Defence advanced research department is developing a thing they've called poison (something you eat or drink which makes you sick and die). They have hopes it will sort out those baby eatin' dingos. =) . . . Lockon Advanced Realism with Touch-Buddy

In the early 1970s when we first got cars and learnt english, we found ourselves overrun by roos. The metalstorm was the solution. I recall it being to counter the overpopulation of rabbits :P P.S speaking of roos. If mine doesnt stop trying to beat up the Postman Im going to have to sell him, any takers? :P ---= 169th Panthers -Flt Lt.- =--- http://www.169thpanthers.com.au AMD64 S939 3700 | 2GB Corsair DDR500 | 21" CRT ATI Radeon X800Pro | 2x36GB WD Raptors | SB Audigy TIR3 | TM-868 | X52 | CH Pedals | Creative 5.1 Spkrs
nscode Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Imagine a gun that fires a millions rounds a minute...... Now imagine how long it's ammo lasts....doh! Reload! Think of it as a very fast unguided missile instead of a gun. :) But with just one shot and it being unguided, you better have a good aim :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Doug97 Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 This might be useful in vehicle-based CIWS ... light and simple but with a very low reaction time.
warthogmadman987 Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 The had a major section on this on the discovery channel, the show called bullets. Awesome show, best yet. Talked a lot about that gun and even mounting it on airplanes. It was SWEET! I think they rerun the show or i am sure you can order it.
Namenlos Ein Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Metal Storm? Nothing new. Look at this soviet «Flaming hedgehog» with 88 7,62mm PPSh SMGs. It was tested in 1946 on Tu-2Sh (Ту-2Ш).
Peyoteros Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 (edited) Yeah, those are old news... same as these videos http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=KO93-8a39SY http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=HyAjzowYP1o http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=zx_9_RgMPCE&feature=related Edited August 26, 2008 by Peyoteros "Eagle Dynamics" - simulating human madness since 1991 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] ۞ ۞

It just that once it fires, the bullets are gone. There's no "magazine". Reload should be taking forever on that thing. If this thing can't hit the missile on the first try, good luck "negotiating" with the missile. The possibility of numbers are impressive, but that's just it. I'd rather invest on a proven CIWS system like Phalanx.
Zorrin Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Just think at 16,666 (±1) odd rounds per seconds.... it would cost an absolute fortune! How much does a shell/bullet for that thing cost? It's preposterous and it'll never work! Well at least I can't see anyone signing up to buy a few thousand of them anyway.... Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
hitman Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Just think at 16,666 (±1) odd rounds per seconds.... it would cost an absolute fortune! How much does a shell/bullet for that thing cost? It's preposterous and it'll never work! Well at least I can't see anyone signing up to buy a few thousand of them anyway.... Nobody will. This is been under development for the past 15-20 years or so, and all privately funded. There isnt an army in the world that would purchase something like this. The only people I can think of that would, would be mercenaries.
golfsierra2 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 The possibility of numbers are impressive, but that's just it. I'd rather invest on a proven CIWS system like Phalanx. Or Goalkeeper. Very effective system. 1 kind regards, Raven.... [sigpic]http://www.crc-mindreader.de/CRT/images/Birds2011.gif[/sigpic]
RedTiger Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 I've getting a really big kick out of this thread. Thus far, these comments about nobody wanting it sound a lot like what the US Army said about the Gatling gun and the later true machine guns around the turn of the previous century. Unfortunately...WWI proved them wrong. :( This is a bit different, and I agree I don't see much use for it, but its still ironic.
nscode Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 What is more ironic is that it would have more use in WWI... put it on a fast rotating and tilting mount and sync it to fire at a desired direction and you can really storm an entire field with bullets... but who fights in the field these days? Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
S77th-konkussion Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 I think these are the same guys that showcased the electronic handguns with no moving parts. Now those seemed to be a lot more promising than the MS. The MS kind of hits me as a dramatic, massive shock value marketing item or something.
