Hey Guys,

I was wondering the other night if the green HUD's on the A10-C Warthog we see while flying are real in the actual A10-C Warthog we are flying?

Like if they are not real, how in the world would you fire rockets and or even navigate to way-points?

Thanks,

Seth

Yes, they are real. Look up pictures of the cockpit of any modern fighter aircraft and you'll see they have a HUD. Everything in A10C is models after the real deal. Even some civilian aircraft are using HUDs now, and some luxury cars are being built with HUDs to give the driver important info without looking down.

As to answer your other question, you can certainly navigate to waypoints using the compass, HSI, TAD, and even paper charts if you had to. Before the HUD was invented, gun sights were actually physically affixed to the cockpit and would have reference points for impact points at different ranges.

I notice you mention Von Richthofen if you are interested in historical pilots do some research on Eric "Winkle" Brown and prepare to be amazed.

I even have a Head-Up-Display in my BMW. They are very real!

If I would like to fly SFM I could get it for free at World of Warplanes.

You only need 2 of the following 3: Altitude - Speed - Skill

Arg! I hate HUDs in cars! I know I should like it as a sim pilot but it's terribly distracting and in a car I was renting it couldn't be turned off!

My Camaro 2SS has a full color HUD.. shows song and artist during change, nav updates and turns, heading, temp, G's, ShiftQue, Tac, etc. Couldn't drive without it now. That car is basically a computer.. with a few car parts thrown in. My 2014 SS blows my '69 SS away in every aspect.. but the HUD is definitely the cherry on top.

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

$53k vs. $36k actually, but the point I was trying to make is that although the '69 was a beast, current day technology trumps the pure muscle of the early muscle cars. I was surprised to learn that..

Sorry to get off HUD topic.

Wow, someone really has to give a medal to this amazing community for patience. To be polite, this is far beyond a noob question.

*gives a medal*

I'm glad people don't react negatively to the noobest questions and that we're still able to explain simple things to anyone

What gets annoying is when the same question is asked over and over at the same place (forum) :D

What's interesting with the HUDs is that it's a bit hard to realize that those pictures are collimated to the infinite and really "stick" to the external world due to their geometry.

The red dot sights on portable weapons work exactly the same way BTW.

I've seen only 2 real HUDs in my life (one FFS, one car), it's really cool.

I just hope they'll manage to do a proper implementation of them with VR. Someone suggested to draw the HUD very big and far away from the aircraft to simulate real life HUDs, I think it's a good/simple solution.

What surprised me about the HUD in this particular car I rented was that there was no way to switch it off. As much as I searched through the settings I couldn't figure how. So that's another bad design choice. I though it was terribly distracting. A driver doesn't need such precise info available like a fighter pilot in combat does. It's gimmicky and seems unsafe to me. At least let the driver turn it off. All I could do with it was lower it so it wasn't right in my view of the road.

Take a look at the Microsoft Hololens.. it's HUD goggles that allows a graphical overlay on objects within line of sight. They did a demo where an architect drags a building from his monitor to a boardroom table. The attendees are wearing hololens and see the building sitting on the table. Later, when the actual building frame is up, a construction manager calls the architect and tells him he believes an I-beam has been placed where an interior door is. The architect goes into the building to that spot, puts on hololense to see a graphical overlay of the room once it's finished.. sees that there is indeed a door planned to be in the spot where the vertical I-beam is. He walks over to the wall and grabs the door with his hand and slides it over, then clicks save. There are also demos of people playing minecraft and building objects around their living room. Simply amazing.

Actually, with my Camaro, it would be unsafe not to have the HUD. The capabilities of the car are stunning.. they had to put features in it to protect the driver from himself. If I turned the traction and stability features off I know I'd lose it in a matter of minutes.. it's just too powerful.. and once you start taking corners at 50mph+ you'll be glad to see the G force, speed, and tachometer reading in the HUD so you can keep your eyes on the road. You can move the HUD around and turn it off though, and there is an analog gauge for every digital reading as a backup (though the thought of going eyes down while in the max performance envelop does induce a pucker factor of about 10).

There speaks a victim of hype and marketing!

No HUD, and a beast. There is no excuse for not being able to handle hardware with the traction control off. Get back to basics, it is where the fun is!
