Hello,

After several unsuccessful attempts to stay alive on the 104th, I've come to the conclusion that the only way to have positive experiences with the fishbed is in a team.

Otherwise I wander around, snaking through valleys, painting friendlies and getting asskicked by aim120s.

I live in Hannover, Germany and would love to team up with someone a bit more experienced.

Cheers!

Hi Erin!

Flying in the 104th server is indeed a bit of a challenge. I've been using the MiG-21 since the day it was released on steam and I know how to use it well. I would love to help you out. I live in the Netherlands, so we share the same time zone.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Because MiG - 9. That's why...

1. You will die. A lot.

2. If you kill ANYONE in a fighter that's NOT another 21, you've covered 30 of your deaths.

3. See them first.

4. Get on TS and see where the fighting is. Nearly all of my kills revolved around being in the right place at the right time, often by accident, in the weeds.

5. Turn the radar off almost all the time. Pack mostly IRs. See #3.

6. If they get into a turning fight with you, they've made a grave mistake. Punish them for it. I bagged a 15 that had a perfect escape window and he turned into me.

7. Friendly fighters that aren't 21s make great improvised AWACS.

8. If you've got another 21 with you, one of you is bait. The other is the ambusher. Those positions can change without you knowing, so communication is key. That great wheel you hear about in that Dogfights episode about Vietnam? Yeah, that kind of actually works.

Also try to watch every sortie again. Run the replay... hope it works...then watch the tacview replay for better understanding. In 21 you die mostly without knowing exactly where the enemy was or what exactly was happening or what escape you had and after seeing yourself dying a few tens of times you can start too see some patterns in these aspects.

I didn't died sufficient times yet... so I am still very unskilled with it but I understood many of the points Eihort said above.

Also... in last sorties I observed enemies firing lots of Aim120 towards 21s in salvos... supposedly a Mig21 hard maneuvering can defeat a lot of them. I did a few times but the worst case is 3+ missiles on you from above...

Oh... and if you die... don't get anger.

Expect this to happen a lot :D

*sigh* the 120C really kills the fun. I get shot down by them 100% of the time.

Also, spotting contacts without radar is next to impossible. Not only do they have to be within 2miles, but the fishbed canopy has this aweful used look with dozens of scratches and stains.

I'll just keep trying.

Thank you all for your replies and again, I 'd be happy to team up with someone.

Aim-120 is actually quite useless against mig-21*. :music_whistling:

With all the F-15 that had been destroyed by Mig-21s, now all Eagle pilots consider us as a very valid thread, and most of them fire 3-6 Amraam in salvo. However with some good manoeuver, they are just useless. biggest threat for Mig-21 is SHORAD and Aim-9.

...oh yeah, and mavericks. I managed to get shot down by 373rd-CRASH with a damn Maverick. He was escorting an F15 that never found me. O.o

* disclaimer: valid until you meet an very skilled F-15. They you are just dead.

Not to mention zooming in is extremely limited in the mig 21 for some reason compared to other modules

You can adjust the maximum zoom parameters in the views.lua in the MiG-21 Mod folder.

I'm not sure whether this file is Server pure protected however, so proceed at your own risk.

Is limited with 10°. Instead of 20° Mig21 has default 30°. As Cobra847 said you can edit views.lua... but for Mig21 is actually called 03_Views.lua :P and is located in "\Mods\aircraft\MiG-21BIS\Entry"

The servers can't enforce for Mig21 view settings I think... not unless they add deliberately a section for Mig21 in their server.lua and that is accepted somehow by the client game.

The batch of R3Rs we have now are exceptionally good :D . Maybe after 1.5 update they will be replaced with ones a bit... less challanging fo F-15s :)

I can't maintain a lock until the missile is in range without the contact disappearing or my rwr going Las Vegas on me. It boggles my mind how some manage to have a decent k/d ratio with the fishbed.

I live in the Hannover-Area aswell. Near the Airport.

But I´ve yet to play the MiG-21 in contested skies against people in machines 20 years older then it. I guess the only way I´d do it would be to ground pound.

But as for general how-to about the Mig-21, I can maybe help out, been flying the bird for a while now and apart from Navigation, which I wanted to tackle next, I think I got the hang of it.

Striker: "Copy, say Altitude?"

GCI: "....Deck....it´s a SAM site..."

Striker: "Oh...."

Fighter: "Yeah, those pesky russian build, baloon based SAMs."
