shift611 Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Here's a question I should know but can any building in DCS be damaged or destroyed, if not does anyone know if it will be possible to do this in 1.5 or 2.0 update. I only ask because I accidently dropped a couple of bombs on a town and did'nt see any damaged where there should have been a massive crater, lol.
Devrim Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 (edited) In current version, when you hit a building, you won't see a specific damage model. They're only shining for a while, that's it. We don't even see bullet damages or holes on buildings. But you can destroy a building after many hits, but don't expect a great wreck model. For now, I don't think we will see upgraded things about buildings except for new textures. I hope ED will do something about it. :\ Edited September 26, 2015 by Devrim Intel i7-14700@5.6GHz | MSI RTX4080 SuperSuprimX | Corsair V. 64GB@6400MHz. | Samsung 1TB 990 PRO SSD (Win10Homex64) Samsung G5 32" + Samsung 18" + 2x8"TFT Displays | TM Warthog Stick w/AVA Base | VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Throttle | TM MFD Cougars | Logitech G13, G230, G510, PZ55 & Farming Sim Panel | TIR5 & M.Quest3 VR >>MY MODS<< | Discord: Devrim#1068
JughedJones Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I'm no expert in coding or game design, but it seems to me that destructible buildings that have any kind of damage model would require a performance trade off that I'm not sure any of us would care to accept.
Weta43 Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 They all take damage and will transition from 'alive' to 'destroyed' after taking enough damage. Some will catch fire and burn before being destroyed, some just go from OK to dead. You'll see both in the first few seconds of this : 6TXqjzBABbM Cheers.
shift611 Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 Taking account of performance trade offs for damage models I am sure that ED could build in very easily a "damage on/off" choice as there are in many games these days. OK I said "games" and I know DCS is a sim but in coding its much the same. I only bring this up because DCS is very realistic in all other area's but we constantly see real world targeting and destruction of buildings by dropping smart bombs down ventilation shafts, great stuff lol.
vicx Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Weta43, that was an intriguing bit of footage showing the buildings with what looked like positional damage. You are making me login into DCS right now to double check that I haven't completely missed something that has been in DCS all along.
Devrim Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 ...Some will catch fire and burn before being destroyed... Interesting, I don't remember a fire & burn like this. I should check it. Manuel_108 Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 What?? I've never seen a building burn like this!
razo+r Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Shoot it with tanks and you'll see them burning
Dahlbeck Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I think that clip is from LOMAC. Don't know if the same effects are in DCS?
ebabil Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 i didin't see such effect either. just flashing before collapse. burning fire on buildings would be good also using them as landmark for target areas and some fire rescue missions for helicopters as well. vicx Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 You have to have textures set to HIGH or it won't work. It does work. I just can't believe I've never noticed this before. It looks pretty cool from distance but the flame effect has always looked nasty up close or zoomed in.
Chief1942 Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 In one of the F-86 missions where you are tasked with destroying a hangar at an airbase (Sabre Strike.miz), if you also hit the buildings adjacent to the aircraft parking area, they will not only burn, but have many secondary explosions and effects for some time afterward. i've seen it again in another F-86 mission when shooting rockets at tanks adjacent to a building and missing the tanks, the building would go up like an ammo dump.
