Fudd Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Hey guys I finally found a picture proving that the AH-1W carries the AIM-9. When I was deployed aboard an LHD, they armed the AH-1W's with AIM-9s for air support when we passed through the Straits of Hormuz. -Thank you to GG for believing even though I didnt have a picture to prove it! http://www.aircav.com/cobra/ahgal09/ah1w-037.html (Edit: Spelling) The code is probaly in Russian anyway.
GGTharos Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 No problem - you're the guy who's out there and sees it all after all :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
britgliderpilot Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Was it the Sidewinder, or was it the AGM-122 Sidearm? The Sidearm is possibly the world's smallest anti-radiation missile, and has certainly been carried by the USMC Cobra . . . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg

BTW, weren't all Sidearms expended? Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
ED Team Olgerd Posted June 3, 2006 ED Team Posted June 3, 2006 This is from NAVAIR 01-H1AAC-1 - AH-1W flight manual. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] К чему стадам дары свободы? Их должно резать или стричь. Наследство их из рода в роды Ярмо с гремушками да бич.
Force_Feedback Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 This is from NAVAIR 01-H1AAC-1 - AH-1W flight manual. Where is Igla-B (V) on the Ka-50 then? Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
britgliderpilot Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Don't think the sidearm needs dome covers. BTW, weren't all Sidearms expended? Good point on the first . . . . and not sure on the second. Mid-eighties requirement, that was taken in '89 . . . . . feckit, we don't know the answer, shall we just speculate wildly instead? You all know we want to . . . . it's far more fun! I reckon Olgerd's page proves conclusively that it's possible, certainly :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Wow...this was an issue of debate? Thanks for the pic Fudd and thanks for the manual page Olgerd. I wasn't absolutely positive about AIM-9s on the Whiskey, but I have seen them on the Tango WAY back when I was a little dude living on Pendleton.
Kusch Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Cobra? big deal :) Give me "flying telephone pole" (SA-2)!
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Yup...CH-53s had that capability too. Never saw one myself, but I had read about it. Thanks for the pic. :D
Cobra360 Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Where are the foward control fins on that test round. Or is a dummy with a live motor for test validation work?
ED Team Olgerd Posted June 3, 2006 ED Team Posted June 3, 2006 Where is Igla-B (V) on the Ka-50 then? It is not mentioned in sources we have. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] К чему стадам дары свободы? Их должно резать или стричь. Наследство их из рода в роды Ярмо с гремушками да бич.
britgliderpilot Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Pffft, CH-53s . . . . coolest Sidewinder-equipped aircraft is the Nimrod :P http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Cobra360 Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Pffft, CH-53s . . . . coolest Sidewinder-equipped aircraft is the Nimrod :P Can't the RAF E-3D be armed with them aswell. I saw a pic of one years ago armed with 4 winders.
dynamocl Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Wouldn't fancy my chances much though in a turning fight flying an E3D. That radome must act like a very effective airbrake.
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Pffft, CH-53s . . . . coolest Sidewinder-equipped aircraft is the Nimrod :P OK...got me there...but the E-3 that G mentioned is even cooler. Don't make me bring up that A2A kill by a UH-1D. No...AIM-9s weren't involved, but its still pretty impressive. ;)
Force_Feedback Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 It is not mentioned in sources we have. It was tested on it though, have couple of pictures in a magazine here, it was the "standard" ka-50, so without advanced IR imaging domes or other gimmicks. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Fudd Posted June 4, 2006 Author Posted June 4, 2006 H-53's and sidewinders?????????????????????????????????    I worked on 53's for 5 years in the Corps. I have never heard of sidewider capability, although I wont rule it out. Interesting pic.... I wonder if it is a fake? We used to tell people at airshows that the refueling probe was a giant laser :megalol: The code is probaly in Russian anyway.
Cobra360 Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 Yeah, the AIM-9 can be fitted to just about anything and fired. From the F-86, AH-1, MiG-21, Mirage F1 to even Nimrods and E-3s. It's the most widely used and intergrated missile of all time.
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 We used to tell people at airshows that the refueling probe was a giant laser :megalol: Well...just as long as you used air quotes when saying "laser" to them. :music_whistling:

No...that can't be...stop with the pro-western propaganda!!! Just kidding of course, and having a shot at those who want to turn every thread into the cold war. Lighten up guys, as Jon Glenn said in the early 60's "We've just gotta be forthright, gracious, and magnanimous about this and say...well...the Russian guys just beat the pants off of us, that's all. But now that the space race has begun, there'll be plenty of work for everybody." Come on guys...East and West...lets keep a friendly rivalry. :pilotfly:
Crusty Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 Nah..you worry too much:joystick: oo err...missus:animals_bunny: ** Anti-Pastie**
nscode Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 Yea... nobody wants to turn this into east vs west :music_whistling: But... you can fit an R-60 to a truck... beat that :prop: and.. and... mig-21 had a laser waay back before ch-53 did :smilewink: and.. and... once I saw a Lada go thru a curve and it did the hook (horisontal cobra)! Never saw a Ford do it :D Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Kula66 Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 Pffft, CH-53s . . . . coolest Sidewinder-equipped aircraft is the Nimrod :P Didn't that happen in the Falklands war when they kept meeting Argentinian C-130s on recce in the S. Atlantic?
Starlight Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 Well...just as long as you used air quotes when saying "laser" to them. :music_whistling: And telling them it costs "one million dollar" (bringin' the pinkie to the mouth) :)
