Does this Jet have a compass?

Recommended Posts

Sorry, if this turns out to be a daft question, but does this jet have a compass? I mean, I can't tell if I'm flying North, East, South or West. I've looked all over in the cockpit and it's probably staring me in the face but I can't find it.

Hi,

HUD

HSI - compass rose

Shows True Heading or Magnetic Heading (HSI mode selector)

See Manual page 80/81

HUD, ADI, HSI all have heading information (magnetic heading).

Additionally:

- HSI displays magnetic heading by default or true heading if mode is Cv NAV (provided by INS).

- if your INS is down you can switch to SEC mode to still get gyroscopic info (heading, attitude)

Table page 81 of the manual (pdf 82) has all the info for HSI modes.

In 2.0 with the panels on the right side open you can see another compass-like instrument below the screwdriver. (It isn't moving at the moment though)

I noticed that one the other day, unfortunately it blocks part of the INS keypad for me. Like to see it moved back and right a bit.

It's an emergency compass. You usually don't have time to mess with INS control panel in that kind of situations..

No worried about emergency situations.... I'm concerned it will be there during routine operations and blocking my view.

Yeah i guess it can be stored upwards (the way it looks in 1.5 atm).

Zeus mentioned that all this stuff will be interactive in the future.

1. the magnetic compass in the attitude indicator

2. the gyro in the radio compass

3. and the heading indicator in the HUD

They're all pointing to mag heading according to manual.

Strictly speaking, if it is a compass, which is a magnetic instrument, it will only ever point to magnetic North. All the instruments that show anything else aren't simple compasses. Ironically, for half of the Earth's history, North has been South!

True and grid North direction is always derived from either the magnetic reading, or some other form of positional data such as GPS or inertial navigation systems.

It is an emergency magnetic compass. By default it is in the stowed position, unfortunately when we compiled the new cockpit they were in the open position.

They will be fully animated for the next update.
