Pikey Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Hi, i'm no expert in the UH-1 but i'd like opinions on if this is operational issues or a bug. I set a Huey down, stopped the engine, switched off generator and battery. But I didn't turn off some things like the IFF, the radio altimeter. After 2 hours I tried to start up and I had a flat battery, no DC volts, tried spare gen and I can hear the gen noise but dont get any tick-tick-tick for the starter. How did the battery get flat? I tried everything, no fuses popped out, I get lights int he pit, but press starter all needles to 0 and lights out. Thoughts? should this happen? Did i do something wrong? ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Cibit Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 What about radio's or beacon? Rogue Trooper Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 If the battery was off then it should be isolated from the system. Did you switch GEN and battery on again? Also did you switch the Starter-Gen to starter? Pikey Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 Yep. the battery was deffo off. This is 100% no doubt. Thats why i don't get how it can go dead. Unless there is another system broken that involves the starter. And remember I got lights in the cockpit on the warning system, they just go out only when pressing the starter. It makes no sense but I'm not sure of the electrical system. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Cibit Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 (edited) Check that the Generator and Invertor are both in required position for start, I regularly shut down and come back to the chopper after food break or whatever and start up no problems Also that the throttle release is released. Basically for a shut down I turn off any electrical drain, like lights and radios. roll throttle down to stop and then past it after first turning off fuel pump. Invertor off, Radar Altimiter off Generator to start position and battery off. Then start up as normal. I dont change the buss and AC/DC rotaries after setting for start when shutting down. They are set to ESS BUSS and AC Thats from memory will check later when time allows me to fire up teh game Edited February 7, 2016 by Cibit i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Adding JTAC Guide //My Vid's//229th AHB
Pikey Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 I'm going to see if I can repro, since obviously this situation was some time in the past and the value of troubleshooting is diminished. I'll see if I can shutdown only with the engine stop and battery off and see if I can flatten it. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Pikey Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 yeah I can reproduce in minutes. So its probably something to do with as switch sequence that I am breaking it. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Pikey Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 working hypothesis is that I didnt turn the gen from start to standby after takeoff which left the battery pretty low and then probably flattened later... ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Body Farm Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I always felt the battery on the Huey was not the strongest but I could not reproduce this with the battery switch OFF. I see no battery voltage drop (and I left everything in the on position). Could you post a track? And remember I got lights in the cockpit on the warning system, they just go out only when pressing the starter. It makes no sense but I'm not sure of the electrical system. If you ever had a flat battery on your car, you would notice the same thing. There is sufficient voltage for the lights but once you engage the starter, it will drew tons of amps and the voltage will fall (turning off the lights). What is the battery voltage before you try to start the engine? working hypothesis is that I didnt turn the gen from start to standby after takeoff which left the battery pretty low and then probably flattened later... I don't think it is the problem. If your main Gen. is on it will do all the work and the standby will be just that, a standby. You can see on the DC Loadmeters that the main Gen is doing all the work, while the standby is on zero. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Pikey Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 (edited) I (just) read the manual :) ha. I can't reproduce now that i've read the manual. Something to do with being an idiot and unlearning it. :/ The required voltage to start is listed in the manual. I have no way of knowing what charge I had, in retrospect, but it seems this is the key. How I drew it from the battery without knowing i'm not sure, I still think its because I wasn't charging the battery by flipping the gen into standby instead of start early on, but that isn't the root cause as you suggest. At least i got to understand the electrical system a little better, when I get a minute i'm testing the battery drain rate to see how fast it is! Rogue Trooper Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 As you have found, if the battery is flat and you are at an airport then engage the external power supply. This will cure a flat battery... I think. I think. It does. Or at least it did in the past. Haven't used it in a while but it saved my ass a couple of times in harsh winter missions.
