will- Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Couldn't find anything in search, maybe someone can help. When using the aim9 and switching between different planes, does this have any effect on the missile or is it just there for show? Sryan Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 selecting a plane sets the 'snake' for air-to-air gun mode. 2 lines will be drawn on the HUD when you go gun mode, if the target aircraft matches the one you entered, and the wing tips of the target 'touch' the lines of the snake, squeezing the trigger will result in gun hits. GurbY Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Am I the one who's not paying attention here..?? TS asks something about AIM-9 modes, and the answer is something about gunfire....?? Where did I go wrong in understanding it all..??

Where did I go wrong in understanding it all..?? To clarify. there is no sepperate aim-9 mode from air-to-air gunnery mode. If you hold down the master mode control button you'll go to air-to-air mode wich controls both the sidewinder and the gun. if your gun safety is off the HUD looks like this. The OP's question is how the target profile influences the Sidewinder, wich it does not at all. Since the OP stated his logic dictated it was otherwise just for show. I thought I'd briefly mention how the target profile influences the funnel, and how the funnel works. have a nice day! Check my F-15C guide

Where did I go wrong in understanding it all..?? Well, will-'s question was not very specific as to what he wants to know exactly, that's why some people interpreted and answered it one way, some of them the other way. All of them was right regarding their own understanding of the original question at least... :D But switching between the planes (meaning "aircraft types") has influence only to gun funnel sizes (edge-to-edge), and nothing to AIM-9.

Mad Dog 7.62 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Isnt there a way to switch the AIM9 between fixed boresight and a seeker scan pattern? lobo Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 AIM-9 To lock the seeker on to a target, you have several options: a) Boresight: Uncage seeker with china hat fwd short b) Target set as SPI, Slave all to SPI with China Hat Fwd Long c) Initiate a seeker conical scan with TMS Fwd Short Notes: 2. When the missile has acquired a target, the tone changes to a higher pitched 'growl'. The pitch will vary according to the quality of the IR lock. 3. Boresight mode: (default) Seeker fixed to boresight line. When attacking a target in boresight mode, uncage seeker prior to launch to confirm seeker has a good lock. Seeker will track if IR intensity is strong enough; otherwise seeker will start to drift and will need to be recaged. Manoeuvre aircraft to place reticle over target for a valid lock prior to launch. 4. Uncaged mode: Seeker no longer bound to boresight line and floating around the scan zone. 5. Conical scan mode: Seeker performs a conical scan pattern around boresight line to cover a greater volume of airspace ahead of aircraft. 6. HOTAS commands, Track =TMS fwd , Break Lock =TMS aft , Missile Reject =China Hat aft , Uncage Seeker = China Hat fwd. GurbY Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 You are not a moderator. Settle down. There doesn't seem to be a reason for you to complain how one person answers another person's question. If the OP had felt that the question wasn't adequately answered it's reasonable to assume that individual is more than capable of saying so on their own behalf. And thank you for this great contribution to this thread.
