Possible Warthog Slew Replacement

Recommended Posts

Could this possibly be used as a direct replacement for the TM Warthog Slew 'nub'? I don't know enough about the electronics side but it looks to be about the right size and can be had for $85 or so. Worth the money to me. Still can't fathom whybthey went with the silly nub...

Another 4 way hat would be better than what they did.

If someone with more electronics knowledge says it should work I'll do just that. :)

The "correct" slew will be one this:

But the Warthog slew circuit dont "talk" with then, besides they cost 4 digits. :)

Hey Sokol, since I am doing the other mods for the cougar, is this something I should look at also? There is plenty of room in there if I need to put in a small micro-controller. I was thinking PS3 style joystick with a attiny85 to get the output right.

The original "TDC" in Cougar is a PS3 style 2 axis analog micro stick.

Any of these analog micro stick in eBay as replacement for PS3 will work with Cougar original circuit, no additional controller is need.

Or any 2 axis analog device of this list - that fit in the place.

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/switches/navigation-switches-joystick/1114837?k=directional%20switch

E.g. the one linked by OP - that don't work for Warthog because this use different protocol for his "slew" - will work in Cougar. Notice that this model dont have the central click like "PS3" micro-stick.

The question is, until now seems that none domestic joystick/HOTAS come with a really good "TDC/slew":

In Tm F16FLCS/F22PRO are a mini-track ball or a "IBM" laptop mouse (transducer pressure device), in Cougar a micro-stick - like in CH PRO Throttle, Logitech G-940 stick (one of HAT on grip), some kind of pressure device in Saitek X-55, and a digital axis cursor in Warthog (probable borrowed from cellphones directional switches).

And players say that all this solutions are bad...

Wow Sokol, Thanks for the detailed info. You are a wealth of information. As you can tell I am new to this community. I will have to pick up a Warthog for testing.

Your living in the states just skip the TM Throttle and get a real one from flight helmets.com

CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans.

CH Ministick is pretty good apart from not centering reliably but it still works better than any of the competitors (meaning that I can slew Shkval or TDC faster and more accurately than other people with other joysticks). This makes me think that the CH Hall effect version the OP posted would be the best option for a flight simmer budget as I think it would be pretty similar but without the centering issue. But of course you can't fix Warthog with this.

You could fix the warthog with it. It just wouldn't be a direct replacement. You have to run it as a separate joystick with it's own board and wires. Something I'm contemplating. Budget is a little stretched after a new vid card and monitor purchase.

You can start with PS3 like micro-stick and a Teensy board - both low cost - and eventually replace the mini stick with this HALL stick from OP link.

One possible issue with this model is have ~20mm height above the throttle case wall (HAT versions).

For me the issue with the HOG mini stick is the 'grip'. Finger 'slides off the very small shiny surface, and i cant 'sheath' it because the housing restricts it.

If I could remove the housing, perhaps i could put a rough cover over the stick.

Anyone know if the 'housing ' could be removed or is it integrated into the controller/stick?

Has anyone got photos of this dis-assembled ?

The guy use a laptop mouse "nipple" there.

Pictures of disassembled throttle handle there:

Tm did this "HAT" small because the controller inside - looks smartphone directional - is small and his X, Y axis work in 2D, a big "HAT" will force the mechanism.

I was inspired by your question, since the slippery surface is what made it unusable for me too.

I have now tried sanding the centre nipple gently with 180 grit sanding paper, and it seems to work.

I don't know how long it will last, but I can now move it around with better control.

Simple and non-intrusive, just be careful about dirt dropping into the throttle.

Maybe one could possibly glue some rubber on top of it (ie. a drop of silicone glue), I think I will try that if it gets slippery again.
