So gentlemen, what's your favorite F-14 livery?

I'll start with mine, I've always been a fan of the VF-31 the Tomcatters AJ-100 livery:

Nice pics...

These are my favorites too.

I can't wait for the Tomcat... :-)

Did the 04' GW cruise with VF-11. That pig was always my favorite!

One of the reasons I prefer the VF-31 livery has to due with the black anti-glare scheme around the canopy. It really does look great when it's shaped so that it stops shortly after the windscreen and tapers into a sharp point near the back.

As pointed out earlier VF-32 also feature this canopy paint scheme:

The early VF-84 Jolly Rogers F-14's also featured this canopy scheme:

After that they went to a shape that tapered into a sharp point at the tip of the nose, but that doesn't look as good as the earlier VF-84 ones IMHO:

Luckily, this photo is actually from 1988 - the heart of the LNS F-14A timeframe. :D

(Hint - the glove vane says "USS Theodore Roosevelt - first cruise was 1988-89)

I think this scheme will most likely find its way into the module...at least based on Cobra's past avatar.

And here is another squadron with a similar glare panel, again from the mid-1980s (1985-86 here):

A lot of squadrons also used the "truncated" version on their hi-viz CAG/CO aircraft. Here is one from 1988 with VF-14:

The MiG-21Bis has a really nice variety of liveries - I bet we can expect the same for the Tomcat and perhaps a bit "amplified" if we are lucky.

I do hope they give "priority" to schemes that match the LNS Tomcat's timeframe - though they have already stated that they will include liveries from a few different eras. I think there will be many to choose from.

Maybe I`m just too picky, but I really don`t like hi-viz paintjobs on all gray Tomcats. I much prefer the early gull gray-white colors. They make the plane look like a great white shark. Who had the crazy idea to move on to a dull, boring gray from this awesomeness?!

Yeah I hope you're right :) Also hoping we get the VF-31 livery for the F-14B :)

What potential enemy jet F-14 was used to simulate? I know A-4 was for MiG-17, F-5 for MiG-21, F-21A Kfir for MiG-23. The closes thing that it comes to my mind is probably the Su-27 or MiG-31. By the way excellent pictures Hummingbird.

Probably Su-27 or Su-33's, but I honestly don't know.

The F-14 did recieve some rather stunning adversary schemes:

f14a213ac.jpg

It did! :)

Though this picture is not an "adversary" aircraft per se. It's from one of VF-213's DACT detachments to El Centro around 1987. Here is another picture of NH200 from the same det:

NH_200_1987_disruptive_camo_upload.png

This photo shows that the underlying paint scheme is regular TPS and the black marks are actually water paint. They applied these disruptive black splotches for the detachment then washed them off after the week of DACT was over.

VF-2 did the same around the same time frame, here is one of their hi-viz birds fully muddied with water paint:

VF-2_peeling_disruptive.png

The Tomcat was used as an adversary aircraft by NSAWC. It wore many different schemes, some were quite standard:

file.php?id=64410&t=1

Others were quite stunning! This is their "Flanker scheme":

doc2-021.jpg

f14_fla.jpg

doc2-012.jpg

Here is another that seems more "MiG-31" oriented:

flankat_original.jpg

And a simulated "IRIAF" scheme:

"Flanker" and "IRIAF" flying together:

topg02_l.JPG

This one looks like a shot of a IIAF Tomcat on it's way to delivery:

This is a pretty stunning livery as well:

f15paintjob_zps63f8884a.jpg~original

They wore US markings till they reached Iran. There are quite a few photos of F-14s and F-4Es on their way over usually coming off the Tanker. My guess at least. :)

Btw now that we're posting adversary pictures here's another couple of Flanker ones:

Notice how nice the F-14 looks when it isn't subjected to the harsh conditions on a carrier day & night for years on end. That's why those pampered USAF jets always look so shiny by comparison to the tough Navy ones *jab jab* hehe ^^

Another nice pair of NSAWC photos. :D

0940304.jpg

Both of these photos are from the year 2000, so they are upgraded F-14As (NACA type gun vents, Modex 20 has upgraded ECM blisters).

And two more favorites of mine. :)

VF-41 visiting Spain for some DACT against Mirage F1s (possible in our near future!) in early 1989 - first TR cruise.

0305579.jpg

VF-84 visiting the UK on the same TR cruise, unique 2-color TPS scheme - nice!
