Also enjoyed the first flight. A beer, some tunes and taking the Huey over the mountains in bad weather are pretty good guarantees for fun. Judging also from the first mission you published, I see this being a great campaign :)

With regards to the music (great playlist BTW), I noticed that it is silenced when you turn on the VHF Com for the tower. Is that by design or necessity?

Yeah, same here, and the VVI was dead, too, although the altimeter still seemed to work. Does anyone know if this is normal behavior? I mean, what good is pitot heat if airspeed and vertical velocity indicators cut out anyway? ;)

I think the music is actually played (transmitted) on a specific frequency, in this case 135.4 MHz on the VHF AM radio, so as soon as you talk to the tower, you have to tune to its freq (127.5 IIRC), and so the music will be gone (with "Easy communication" enabled, DCS will automatically tune to the correct freq depending on who you want to talk to). Also note that in these missions, the radio is preset to on and pre-dialed to the correct freq. Normally, you'd have to set both by hand.

 

Also, if you fly in the mountains, it's possible for the music (or any other transmission, really) to cut out as well because this system mostly needs line of sight.

 

(BTW, on Gudauta airfield I could hear Radio Min' Vody just fine - shouldn't the mountains break LOS? Or is atmospheric reflection modeled and applicable for this type of radio waves?)

File size is a bit bigger as I have added a couple of custom unloading sounds (they still need to have their file sizes reduced).

 

Changes:

 

* Minor tweaks to most missions to make them flow a bit better. Nothing drastic.

 

* Escalation has had a thorough overhaul. Better location, improved Laager point, better response and interaction with defending gunships, more exciting LZ insertion.

 

* New sound effects for unloading wounded at Field Hospital.

 

* Two new missions, extending the Demo to 8 overall.

 

I've just flown the entire thing and it's great fun if I say so myself. I even got promoted to Major after the last mission

I experienced the same thing. I put it down to severe icing due to the altitude and wet weather.

 

At one point during the flight you are skimming the cloud base which would make it worse. I've found the instruments come back to life once you descend towards the Field Hospital.

 

Some times I've found the VVI, Altimeter, and Air Speed Indicator all stop working. Sometimes it is just one or two of the instruments, so I think this is normal behaviour (not 100% on this).

 

It wasn't intentional on my part, but it makes the trip more interesting :D

Fun missions, good work. Just a note, but Medevac helicopters are not armed. Not in Vietnam, and not now.

I need to correct my self, the 1st Cav was the only unit to fly armed Medevacs in Vietnam. But I need to do more research on that. Good article on Medevac and Casevac. I always remembered Casevac as medical evacuation in a non dedicated medical vehicle, IE no red cross. I have spent a little time training and flying the Casevac missions, but I have never flown a Medevac bird.

Medevac Campaign

 

I think gunfighterSIX has the reason. The difference is in the use of the helicopter.... I think that a Medevac is a helicopter used specifically for medical evacuation (Red Cross and unarmed); Casevac is any helicopter used in one moment to make an evacuation.... So an armed slick can be used for evacuations, but this isn't it's role.

Oh okay, I never realised the distinction between the two but that makes sense.

 

The good thing about DCS is that you can swap out the load out as you like it. Thankfully nothing in the missions I've built need you to have door gunners (other than crew chief text), so it won't cause any problems there.

 

The Crew Chief text still works because the flew with a crew chief and medic. You just wont be able to see them in the helicopter is all:smilewink:. You dont have to change your mission because of the stuff I said, I was just mentioning some factual stuff. There your missions and your hard work.

Oh no that's no problem at all, I really appreciate the insight to be honest. I've watched hours of documentaries, and read a load of books to try and get the right feel for the campaign so anything that makes it more believable is a positive.

 

Actually seeing your comment reminded me that I need get back in touch with the air cav group and take my check ride. Hopefully I'll get to fly with you at some point.

I'm about 2/3s the way through Chickenhawk right now, and read just prior Guts and Gunships. My thoughts are no matter what you call it, there would be no way would I want to go into a hot LZ without a door gunner. Those pilots and crews had big ones.

but

I have a little problem. If I failed a mission, or abort it, and come back later to the campaign, it randomly come back to the first or sometimes second mission ?

as someone experimented something like that ? is it a feature of the "demo only campaign" or a ED bug or something only on my system ?

as i remember I recently experimented the same fact with an other campaign.

your edit wouldn't make a sense. because this file is updated every time the player plays particular campaign

Question, if we overwrite version 3 missions with version 4, will we loose our progress? I'd hate to fly over the humps again. :cry: Mommy.

hehehe. Don't worry Chip, I'll upload a version tonight without the first mission. I only do half days on Friday so it should be up by early evening.

 

Edit: Here you go. It's a version without the introductory flight, so that should save you an hour and a half (or 45 minutes if you don't care about your crew chief staying up all night) :D

Looks like the general consensus is this resetting of progress is a bug.

 

Campaign Update

I've been recharging my batteries this week getting ideas for the next set of missions (I over did it last week), but I'll hopefully get a few more done this weekend.
