Thats just the preview window, resoluti9n is hardcoded afaik.

As I've said on this forum before Jar, there is no way to make some of these "gentlemen" happy.

Thanks for providing another data point to the VR performance thread. I am not that surprised to learn that having a i7 4790K @ 4.9Ghz helps with satisfaction levels. Still there is probably no need need to rub other peoples noses in it.

Do you know or believe the preview window or other monitor resolution has any effect on performance? Should we lower the resolution on the preview window monitor and in game? Is performance any different with Steam VR active? I have run DCS forgetting to start Steam VR and didn't notice a difference.

Well, I am sufficiently convinced that it works to splash out a fair sized wedge of money on an upgrade and Oculus Rift.

And of course, as time passes, things will be polished further still, and the magic frame rate goals will no doubt be achieved and surpassed.

There will always be cynics, and people determined to simply berate everything. You just have to decide who to believe, and who to ignore. I have seen enough positive reviews now to commit.

Here are my graphical settings for both v2 and V1.5.

Derek - you have 32GB RAM. Why not increase the preload radius to max? That should help with the stutters. The bigger, the smoother, only limit is RAM (of which you have plenty).

Who is rubbing people's noses in anything?

Stang asked how VR ran in DCS.

I gave him a single sentence saying it was good on a GTX980 and suddenly I'm hauled over the coals by folks trying to convince me that I'm not actually having a good experience.

I am so over these forums, it's completely pointless contributing anything here.

I guess you guys all think the TM Warthog is the worst stick ever as well??? :D

EDIT: actually I've only got myself to blame. I was in a good mood and thought the general level of whining had fallen enough to take a few people off my ignore list.

Wrong.

Ignore list is back on overdrive.

I don't think blaming a whole forum for your defensive attitude is the way to go. I didn't see anyone trying to ruin your fun, as you put it. VR is amazing and that's why the VR sub forum is popular, active and full of excited passionate people. ^^

I didn't see any whining either, if you take constructive criticism from people who are having issues as whining then yes, ED's forum must be a real nightmare for you as constructive criticism is everywhere! All I could see was you being defensive because someone with a different OS, processor, GPU and VR HMD tried to report and document an issue you weren't having.

And yes, a lot of people believes these firsts consumer versions of the Rift and the Vive are only a step in the right direction and by no means the pinacle of VR, just like most of us are enthusiastic about an improved VR support within DCS considering it only just started being implemented by ED and per their own words "Although we added Oculus 1.3 SDK support today, there are a number of areas we still plan to improve[...]".

I'm surprised it comes as a shock to you that the sim crowd is as dedicated as it is demanding, most of us are incredibly happy with what we get in DCS but we'll still be hungry for more of everything, content, realism or immersion. Thankfully Eagle Dynamics and sim dev teams in general share that passion and are always pushing the limits of what sims can achieve. I don't think that makes them "spiteful old farts". ;)

I think a number of VR users are relating their experiences directed towards the developers in the expectation that they attend to whatever discrepancies they can correct so that the VR experience in DCS is as good as it could be. I doubt folks are trying to talk others out of VR. I don't know of any VR user who is not entirely enthusiastic about it.

I'm not sure if that helped or not, but I maxed it out and will see how it goes. The dips in frame rates occur when flying over urban areas. Open desert, land and water are no issue.

Here are some screenies too...

So I have been going back and forth between HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. I have both preordered. Wife is making me cancel one.

I am leaning towards the Rift- from everything I have read it is slightly more comfortable and has a slightly better picture. The only downsides I have read is that the Vive has a brighter picture. Plus, I read ATW is awesome for delivering a smooth experience.

Haven't used a VR headset yet- can't wait to get into it. :) Built my PC beginning of this year to support it.

Keep the Oculus order. I demoed both and the Oculus is the winner in my opinion. Just the ATW is enough, but the screen clarity is better as well. Plus, you'll look good to "Mrs Shogun" as you are keeping the less expensive one...then take the additional money that would have gone to the Vive and buy her flowers or something else :D

Found the other married guy here ;)

That is a great idea.

The whole "roomscale" concept looks really cool. I just don't have a dedicated room/space for it and don't see myself using it much other than the "Hey, Cousin Eddie is here... check this out... okay cool, back to the flight sim now..."

Everyone at work knows I have a nice sim setup and they are anticipating the day my Rift gets in lol. Hope it doesn't disappoint. I am trying to keep my expecting in check.

I am expecting this to be staring through a grid getting blasted in the eyes with a spotlight.

Under promise, over deliver to myself lol

Ha! Since I'm "in the business" my beautiful Italian wife encourages me to get these things! One of my Techs got his CV1 Wednesday...he mysteriously caught the "Oculus Flu" that day...

I wrote up my experiences with both the CV1 and Vive demos here in this subforum. Vive's roomscale and controllers are fantastic, but for flying/racing sims, it's irrelevant. The Cv1 has better image quality anyhow AND ATW!

To get the best performance make sure you run everything down in your graphics options first and slowly tune up from there, testing as you go...I've been chasing frame rates since the days of QEMM and Falcon 3.0 :D

I'm giving Milepapa's suggestion a go to see what the preload radius does for frame rates. It's likely that I should just turn off the frame rate counter as the ATW makes up for any issues nearly all of the time anyhow :pilotfly:

As for framerates I was getting roughly 47-50fps with almost all my settings on high. I wonder if I'm getting any SLI benefit with the Oculus program even thought DCS doesn't support it???

I get the same fps myself and am having no performance issues with everything on high settings in game. I don't notice jutter myself so ATW must be doing its job. Everything flies smooth as silk. I am getting severe motion sickness though even after minor use. I am getting it even in lucky's tale as the camera moves forward and that game is pegged at 90fps so it's not jutter causing my motion sickness I don't think. Over the desert in the mustang at 90fps I was still getting queasy too so I don't know. Makes it very hard to use for more than 10 mins at a time. I'm hoping this goes away as I get my VR legs...

You need to pace yourself. Close your eyes at times to reorient your brain. It takes some time at first, so be patient. I recommend that folks stop as soon as they feel some discomfort and then come back.

You new guys are spoiled with the CV1 and ATW...back when I got my DK2 almost two years ago you just needed to "power through" the drops in frames and deal with the judder :joystick:

ATW really makes a difference! Turn on your frame rate counter and then fly low over Las Vegas. Then move your head around and you'll see the apparent ghosting of all of the objects as your system frame rates drops below your device refresh rate (kicking in the ATW). Keep in mind that the lower your system frame rates go the worse the ghosting will appear to the point of real judder if the frames go way too low.

It's DCS's frame counter:

Oculus' Software nags me the entire time about how I dont meet VR Specs.

They dont even test the systems, they have a database file, if it detects specific hardware on their "blacklist", then it will nag you about "you dont meet requirements",

99% of everything AMD is on their Blacklist except 390x/Fury+.

Well, to be fair, that's a more or less accurate evaluation when it comes to AMD CPUs. They come nowhere near to the Intel Core family in gaming performance.
